US sends Poland extradition request for Roman Polanski

Why does so much of Hollywood openly support a convicted child rapist?
Because there is a difference between applauding a man's work and applauding a man's entire life. Just because one approves of Roman Polanski as an artist does not mean one approves of Roman Polanski as a human being. People are capable of separating person from art.

I mean, Koichi Sugiyama, composer of Dragon Quest, denies the rape of nanking after all. Just because I enjoy Dragon Quest series doesn't mean I approve of his views. Because there is a separation between art and artist. Approving of the art does not mean approving of the artist and the entirety of their life.

Most of Japan likely does.

why won't it work? isn't there an extradition agreement between the two countries?
Those agreements usually contain a clause that state cannot be forced to jail and give up their own citizen - they were designed with the reverse situation in mind. Now, there are some various extra agreements, but apparently none apply here, so as long as R. P. stays in France/Poland/Switzerland, he's legally safe unless they make huge changes to international law.

You're comparing denying a famous historical atrocity to raping a kid.

And no, they are not just applauding his art. They are seriously applauding him.

he has passport to all 3 countries?!

That petition is different from people applauding him at the Oscars. The latter is supporting an artist's work. The former is supporting Polanski, the man who raped a child.

And of course my comparison isn't entirely on the same level. But they both exist in that quandary of supporting art vs. supporting the creator.

Nope. This is completely false. It would be like saying that most of America thinks Obama is muslim, just because some hardcore conservatives say so. Sugiyama is not an average Japanese guy who holds common views on history. He is a old man who surrounds himself with ultra-conservative friends, and his denial of Japanese war crimes in WW2 is deplorable. There's no defending it. He doesn't just talk about it, he's also actively involved in supporting awful conservative political causes in Japan.

Anyway regardless of his work or the victim's Stockholm Syndrome, that mofo needs to be thrown in prison already.

You can applaud someone's work and talent without applauding their character.

No, you can't. You can consume the culture they create without lauding the person, but rising to your feet and pounding your hands together at the mention of his name is celebrating him. To say nothing of actually casting a vote to bestow the honor. It's reprehensible.

France has restricted jus soli though. So I'm guessing one of his parents were french citizen, and the other a polish citizen, so he got both?

yeah I was trying to find some more info but it seems he was born in France but didn't gain citizenship until 1976. Wiki lists both of his parents as Polish though. Not exactly clear.

So I'm allowed to say "The Pianist is a great movie" but not "Polanski made a great movie"?

That's not what he's saying at all. They made a point to give him a standing ovation to support him. Just look at the sad petition of a bunch of respected Hollywood directors who support him. They're doing much more than saying he made a good movie.

Sure, he should get convicted for his crimes but prison accomplishes nothing. IDK make him hours upon hours of community services or something.

To be honest I hope--if they ever catch him--they throw like 150 years at him, if for no other reason than to set an example for others if they ever try and pull such a scum ass move.

He raped a 13 year old girl, pleaded down to save himself serious jail time, then ran away because he didn't want to face the consequencesof what he did.

Okay, you got it. Prison is useless, let's abolish all prisons and let all criminals go free. It accomplishes nothing!

No. They aren't useless. They are places where people who are threat to society should be until they'are rehabilitated.

I just looked up this guys life story... Damn. While I do believe he should serve time, he has a tragic story. His family was killed in the holocaust and then some years later his wife and unborn child were randomly cut up and murdered in his home.

You could do this for many many criminals. It doesn't take away the crime.

So as long as a rapist "gets it out of their system" or whatever then hey, it's cool? Bygones be bygones?

There are a lot of people that commit crimes that they would never commit again. Someone who murders their wife for cheating on them may be highly unlikely to murder someone else. Do we just figure, hey, prison's not going to change anything, she's already dead? Just go ahead but don't do it again?

Scorsese, Allen, Aronofsky, that overhyped Pan's Labyrinth guy should get way more hate for joining the "free Polanski" petition considering how much hate Polanski gets.

Not saying they're equally disgusting but still.

I think the whole holocaust/manson family thing garners him some sympathy with that group too. He's just another tortured artist.

Couldn't you say the same for Mel Gibson and his father, yet he is shunned even after admitting he was wrong and pro actively trying to change?

I think Hollywood is alright with it because there is some shady stuff going on that is probably very similar, sex rings, taking advantage of young people. There is good people but an under current of bad stuff that gets brushed under the carpet is there.

I t.

The same? Nah. fuck it. Gibson is an angel compared to Polanski. Gibson is the one who can be seen as troubled soul that just got derailed and is trying to get on track. The fact that he's so shunned while Polanski get so much support is disgusting.

Polanski is absolutely a threat to society. More than a threat, his freedom all these decades stands as a mark of shame on society that a rapist can get away and be free, successful, and celebrated. He has also not been rehabilitated at all - he is unrepentant, sees himself as the victim, and it is his desire that everyone just forget about what he did and get on with it, like he so easily did.

I don't see why he shouldn't go to jail and spend some time reflecting on how he was wrong. Wrong to commit the crime, wrong to run away from it, wrong to make a mockery of the justice system.

Yeah, maybe not too comparable considering the crime and reasoning as well as acknowledgement and rehabilitation.

Woody and his adopted daughter as well. That's a bit fucked up too.

I was just about to post this. Gibson is shunned while a child rapist gets a standing ovation at Hollywood's biggest award event. Insanity.

lets say we throw him in prison.

There is an international child-rape organization happening in our world. Hollywood, EU Parliament members, the church. As long as this starts getting rid of all these fucktards, GREAT.

But one dude, when he was allowed to be who he is by a systemic problem isn't much progress.
What the fuck are you even talking about?

Sadly, nothing will likely come of this. It will be denied like always.

I suspect a lot of Hollywood people support him because they have done similar things, but managed not to get into trouble.
