US sends Poland extradition request for Roman Polanski

Like you said, none of that matters.

Well, I wouldn't say judicial misconduct (which that judge thinks happened, as did another judge, Peter Espinoza, who actually was petitioned by both Polanski's lawyers and the lawyers of the victim's family to drop the charges) doesn't matter, because part of what makes justice just is that it's carried out by the book. I think Polanski should serve time in jail, but I think people should be aware that if Polanski were extradited back here (which, if this one didn't go through, I don't think he ever will be), it may not result in the justice they desire to see carried out.

Edit: Bodacious, that's true, but considering two separate contemporary judges have said that Rittenband engaged in misconduct in his handling of the case, to the extent that he may have to be freed as a result, I tend to think he probably was a shit judge.

And if Polanski was extradited to the U.S. and someone beat him half to the death, they'd be charged with assault too.

If Polanski was currently raping a child and someone beat his ass, they'd get charged with assault and Polanski would be free? News to me.

Lets say the judge speaking to the press was judicial misconduct (him planning to ignore the plea bargain was NOT). It doesn't matter because there are legal avenues he could have pursued if that was the case, like an appeal. Instead, Polanski got scared and fled from justice.

And crimes are committed against the state, not against an individual, so the victim's thoughts on the matter are also largely irrelevent.

I think you're really confused on the jurisdictions involved, and seem to be conflating the two situations just because they both involve child rapists.

I dont't understand why anyone would act in his movies (ex Ewan McGregor in Ghost Writer)

I don't understand why anyone would let him act in their movies (ex Roman Polanski in Rush Hour 3)

He would've been out of jail a long time ago. He had a plea deal that dropped many of the original charges, but he was a coward and skipped out.

Maybe the fear of what happens to people in prison that are charged with raping children scared him. Either way, Polanski will always be a sign that Hollywood is pretentious and have no morales.

Not really, my first post was simply a musing at the prospect of both situations. You chimed in with the attempt to directly compare the two not taking into account that the assault was carried out DURING the raping. You're the one who decided to dive deeper into my simple musing about the juxtaposition of these situations.

Well that's a stupid thing to say.

The movie industry is a big thing with lots of people involved, it's impossible to paint them with such broad a brush.

Most actors desire to be part of good to great art because as performance, not creative, artists, their legacies are contingent upon others, and considering several Polanski films are likely to be watched and appreciated long after his crimes become a legal footnote, he's as likely a source as any of quality work.

Now, given that Polanski is financially enriched when he directs, I would not personally act in one of his movies and find that a pretty ethically unsatisfying answer.

Many people in Hollywood basically live on another planet. They don't bother reading news and stuff because there are so many false crap out there. They have no fucking idea what happens outside of their lives. For example Emma Thompson originally said she supported Polanski but she actually didn't know anything about the case. When someone presented her with the facts, she actually removed her support and agreed that Polanski was a criminal.

That said, I absolutely don't doubt there are many people who completely know what Polanski did and still support him because they are as shitty as him.

Polanski stated that he did not drug Geimer, that she "wasn't unresponsive", and that she did not respond negatively when he inquired as to whether or not she was enjoying what he was doing. The probation report submitted to the court concluded by saying that there was evidence "that the victim was not only physically mature, but willing."

Wikipedia said:
In 1979, Polanski gave a controversial interview with the novelist Martin Amis in which, discussing his conviction, he said "If I had killed somebody, it wouldn’t have had so much appeal to the press, you see? But… fucking, you see, and the young girls. Judges want to fuck young girls. Juries want to fuck young girls. Everyone wants to fuck young girls!"

Well, I guess the way I see it is, Polanski entered a guilty plea to 4 of 5 offenses. The judge doesn't have anything to do with the negotiations of a plea deal and doesn't know the terms of a plea deal until after the defendant enters his plea. Polanski claims he fled the country hours before being sentenced because the Judge could not be trusted to stick with the tems of the plea deal (which, the judge isn't bound by anyway). But Rittenband's dead, so he wouldn't be sentencing Polanski now anyway. I could see an argument that RIttenband should be disqualified for misconduct, but since he's already disqualified by death, that's moot. None of that changes the fact that Polanski pleaded guilty to drugging and assraping a 13 year old.

And just my opinion, but Jack Nicholson probably knew exactly what Polanski was up to and probably into a bit of it himself. The incident that got Polanski charged happened in Nicholson's house.

This whole thing with Roman Polanski is absolutely disgusting. Seriously why would any support an admitted child rapist who fled justice? It would be like supporting that Jared guy from subway commercials or Jerry Sundusky from penn state football. Like honestly the people who support him just as disgusting as he is.

Considering how Penn State has acted since the Sandusky case, I wouldn't be surprised if Polanski has a standing invitation to do commencement speeches there.

Nicholson was not at the house when it occurred.

Then why would you say he was into it a bit himself? Are you implying that underage rape was a usual think at the Nicholson estate?

If I let my friend borrow my house, I'm probably gonna have some idea of the reason why. Drugging and raping underage female models doesn't strike me as a one-and-done kinda hobby when you're a wealthy Hollywood producer on top, and close friends who are facilitating the activity are probably involved.

Just assumptions. I never said it was any more than my hunch.
