the age of consent in Europe is 14 and 15 in a lot of places. you can see why some European countries might not feel sympathy.

I'm curious though. Did he rape her in a sense of actual rape, as in, forceful sex when she said no?

Or is it that he had sex with her, and she consented, but she was just 13?
Drugged and anally raped her.

I don't know much about Roman Polanski, but why can't he just accept and face what he's done?

Live in the US and be in prison, or live in Europe and be free? Not a difficult choice. Especially since he likely believes he did nothing wrong and is being railroaded.

These types of things always seem like they are done for show. Polanski will die a free man in France or Poland or wherever.

lets say we throw him in prison.

There is an international child-rape organization happening in our world. Hollywood, EU Parliament members, the church. As long as this starts getting rid of all these fucktards, GREAT.

But one dude, when he was allowed to be who he is by a systemic problem isn't much progress.

uhhhh

Not for the US no. One could make an argument that if he hasn't reoffended then imprisoning him now is just unnecessary vengeance. Though again, not for the US.

No, it isn't about vengeance. His freedom harms the deterrent effect and makes the us justice system look like it doesn't need to be taken seriously. He needs to not only go to prison but to do hard time in real prison.

I just looked up this guys life story... Damn. While I do believe he should serve time, he has a tragic story. His family was killed in the holocaust and then some years later his wife and unborn child were randomly cut up and murdered in his home.

Yeah all holocaust survivors needed child rape to take the edge off. Wtf dude

I understand what you mean and I know you arent arguing the futility behind incarcerating Polanski, but how would you go about attempting to solve that larger issue? Maybe its the cynic in me but an org with members of such prominence that have a history of doing awful things seems pretty monolithic and powerful.
Fuck Polanski. Nothing will come of this and I hate his audacity for trying to get the case repealed.

A lot people who become sexual predators or serial killers as adults had fucked up and traumatic childhoods. Should they get a free pass?

It's a hard life, but he raped a child. Should a doctor who saves hundreds of lives get a free pass if they commit murder?

How many of these people are child rapists?

None (that anyone's aware of).

One of these requests gets fired off every couple of years. I am not really sure why.

EDIT - Baseball?
Some talented individuals getting recognized, while the ones who caused a scandal get rejected by their peers.

Not exactly a perfect comparison, because the lower four used performance enhancers, unless we want to say that being a child rapist helped Polanski make better movies, but I just saw it in the news yesterday so it was on my mind.

It's an awful example. The BBWAA are not their peers, and are responsible for their own narratives.

So that's a good reason for him to want to rape 13 year olds?

US is doing it wrong. If you want Polanski to come back, act tsundere and tell the world he can never set foot on American soil as long as he draws breath.

Doesn't he live in France? What's the point of this?

He came to Poland for opening of museum of jews history, so he was seen in mass media. This plus the news came that he will be shooting new movie in Poland. They couldn't get him in France, so now they;re trying to extradite him when he's in Poland. Won't work of course.

You know and it's not exactly like the L.A courts didn't grant him leniency on the fact of his past being a Holocaust survivor and his wife's brutal murder while eight months pregnant at the hand of Charles Manson's followers. They took those incidents into consideration of the state of his mental health. Especially the account of the murder of his wife Sharon Tate, which had happened 8 years earlier in '69.

They gave him a plea bargain and dropped 5 of the 6 charges and originally sentenced him to undergo a psyche evaluation at CIM (California Institution for Men)

The final sentencing was never completed though before he fled in '78. It was speculated though he was only going to get probation but his lawyer speculated that the judge was going renege on the jail sentence. The district attorneys actually recommended probation though.

No.

I have respect for most people who endure hardship. I have no respect for child rapists.

why won't it work? isn't there an extradition agreement between the two countries?

Why does so much of Hollywood openly support a convicted child rapist?

Because they view it as a one-time thing and an act forgiven by the victim. Plus he makes good movies and (I assume) hasn't done anything like it since?

It's not the best reason, but it's hard to ague that the man doesn't make fantastic movies and that's what they're mostly supporting--fantastic movies.

I do think Polanski should have served some time in prison for what he's done . . . or at the very least gone through several psychological evaluations and correction training.

"Sorry I drugged and raped a kid, but it was a one-time thing, I promise."

I would burn every copy of Chinatown in the world if it made Polanski face his sentence.

I think the whole holocaust/manson family thing garners him some sympathy with that group too. He's just another tortured artist.

Yes, there is. But it's not automatic. Neither country has any obligation to extradite. The agreement just opens a possibility. Polanski won't be though. He's way to popular and famous plus he wouldn't be forced to do jail time for this crime in Poland due to circumstances. Of course, that last thing doesn't mean there's no grounds for extradition, but courts still do take this into consideration. Add to this the fact that USA hasn't exactly been all that willing to extradite their citizens to Poland.
At this point Polanski would have to be a terrorist or mass murderer for extradition to happen. Sexual assault unfortunatelly won't be enough.

Yeah . . . Not to mention all the other heinous stuff that is rumored to go on in Hollywood. One incident probably seems like nothing to those who genuinely support him as a person, not an artist. Again, not that this is any excuse.
