So I just took a look at the petition, and it's not saying "let him go because he's a great film maker," it's saying "arresting him in Switzerland as he attended a film festival is a dick move." It's saying "people should be able to freely attend international arts exhibitions without fear of arrest."

Not sure I agree with that justification, but it's certainly far more reasonable than "famous people can rape kids all they want."

What do they suggest then? Ask Polanski when it would be more convenient to arrest him?

How is that even remotely reasonable?

NEVER, YOU FILTHY LIBERAL COMMY SCUM!!

Otherwise um........... ah....... the terrorist won!! Or some bullshit.

We need to get him to jail him, for reasons completely different than so give Samantha the justice we couldn't give her in the first place and only for revenge that we were so incompetent to properly process him in the first place and is seing as a mockery of the mockery the US justice system is.
Letting Polanski go flies in the face of equality under the law. If he were a blue-collar worker instead of a rich and famous film director, he would be rotting in a cell. Every day he is free, it is a middle finger to any hope of a fair justice system.

Letting Polanski would send the same message that the Long Island grand jury sent when they refused to indict Eric Garner's murderer: Only some people are held responsible for their crimes.

Why? Is it any worse than arresting someone while he's taking a hike or eating at a restaurant?

He's a wanted child rapist evading his sentence. If the people at a film festival can't understand that, maybe they should read a book on common human decency.

Roman Polanski is such a scumbag. Even worse are those supporters of him that believe he should be left alone because he "apologized" or the victim doesn't give a shit anymore.

Karma my ass.

It's not Stockholm Syndrome. She wasn't held captive by him and she does not identify with him. It's more that she doesn't want to continue being brought up publicly every few years as that girl that Roman Polanski drugged and fucked up the ass. To continually be identified as a shameful footnote in someone else's life. She has stated in interviews that the media circus that followed his escape and the way the media and prosecutors looking to make their careers used her as a pawn has been more traumatic than the rape itself. Her stance has been that the event was bad, the aftermath was worse, she wishes he'd come back to face justice, but barring that she just wants to be allowed to move on with her life.

I mean, law doesn't work that way. The US government is still obligated to capture and punish him for evading justice regardless of her personal wishes. But calling it Stockholm Syndrome is patronizing to the victim.

I think Polanski should be caught, extradited, tried, and sentenced. But I do have sympathy for the way things have gone for the victim. She's a minor detail in the events nominally about getting her justice.

This is basically my stance. She's done with it, it's been like four decades... let's just put on Frozen and let it go. Obsession is a bad look.

I think Polanski is one of the best filmmakers of his era and has been consistently great at his craft.

but the fucker should've done his time. He would've been out decades ago and this would've been behind him, instead of being haunted by it for the majority of his life. He's got no one to blame for this but himself. And his victim might say she's over it, but having people come to her for decades to ask her how she feels about Polanski running from his crimes isn't making things easier for her, meaning that Polanski continues to affect his victim as long as he avoids serving time, a constant reminder of the crime for her.

Wow, I really thought they had a chance this time. Guess some checks cleared.

Edit - Jesus this thread is full of banned GAFfers.

Nope. This is completely false. It would be like saying that most of America thinks Obama is muslim, just because some hardcore conservatives say so. Sugiyama is not an average Japanese guy who holds common views on history. He is a old man who surrounds himself with ultra-conservative friends, and his denial of Japanese war crimes in WW2 is deplorable. There's no defending it. He doesn't just talk about it, he's also actively involved in supporting awful conservative political causes in Japan.
Well, that's disappointing...

So, wait... he seriously drugged and anally raped a 13 year old??

Really?

I would clap for someone like Koichi Sugiyama; despite his awful views you can still disassociate that from his work.

Not sure how anyone can stand up and clap for a child rapist -- I don't care how good his work is.

And then he fled justice before he could be sentenced and enjoys the support of hundreds of wealthy and famous people worldwide because they don't want to be deprived of his fun movies and claim he's the victim.

Celebrity culture at its absolute worst.

Weird to see U.S. continue to attempt to get him extradited while simultaneously kicking dudes out of the military for fighting against child rape in Afghanistan.

The cynic in me might attribute it to Hollywood being a bit more numb to a lot of that since there seems to be numerous supposed incidents of underage sex happening.

I mean, we pulled the confederate flag from stores, so I'm not really sure why removing the films of a rapist from circulation is any different, free-speech wise I mean.

No legal or government actions pulled the confederate flag from any stores, that was all done by the companies themselves.

I really can't think of any way that the government preventing the sale of movies directed by Roman Polanski wouldn't be massively unconstitutinal.

Not only that, but he admitted to it and was confused why everyone thought it was such a big deal. So there's no wiggle room here for false accusations or he said/she said stuff. He did it, admits it, doesn't see the issue.

And if Polanski was extradited to the U.S. and someone beat him half to the death, they'd be charged with assault too.

Generally speaking I dont believe any EU citizen should be extradited to US, because their prison system does not meet our HR-standards (be it solitary confinement, rape and so on).

That being said, it doesnt feel right if he escapes the law.

To be totally fair, iirc, he fled because he and his legal team had made a deal with the judge, but then the judge reneged and had discussed with journalists during an ongoing case his intent to really go after Polanski and punish him above and beyond what any of the prosecutors were recommending. At least one contemporary judge has said that the misconduct of the original judge might require the case against Polanski to be dismissed if he ever is extradited back here.

Now, afaik, a judge is not legally bound to stick by any deals they might make, and Polanski ultimately should have accepted punishment for a crime that even he, if he really interrogated himself, must have understood as pretty damn heinous.

Like you said, none of that matters.

Criminal defendants don't make deals with judges. They can make a deal with prosecutors in which the State agrees to recommend a particular sentence, but the judge is not party to the negotiations, nor bound by them.

Ugh. This is really awful and unfortunate. When I found out about him several years ago, I pretty much erased his work from my head and refuse to ever watch his movies again. POS deserves way worse. A free man...

Yeah, I lost a ridiculous amount of respect for Kate Winslet, Jodie Foster, Christopher Waltz and John C Reilly for working with him on Carnage whilst talking about what a great guy he is in the press.
