Using emulators to fix older, broken games

Don't bother with any version of Deadly Premonition that isn't the Xbox version. Every port from that is badly compromised in numerous ways that emulation will not fix.

That video is 4 years old, and they didn't test RPCS3, which it works very well on. I'm also testing the Switch version on Yuzu, and it works very well on that too.

I got to admit that despite having a lot of OG PS1, Saturn, and Dreamcast games as well as hardware and Retrotink upscale I mostly play them through emulation. Same with the 16-bit era systems.

Playing PS1 games with patches, mods and QoL improvements through Duckstation is like playing on a different console altogether.

Oh, and PSP of course. I have multiple PSP and Vita systems but mostly play PSP games on my Steam Deck, Ally or a PC. Running PSP games with like 4+ upres is a must have.

Sometime I fire up my PS2 or Saturn or Dreamcast (all modded) just because but I really play a lot more through emulation now days.

I'm not a fan of emulation either, so I'm with the guy that everyone hates, but...

Metal Slug 2. The game had massive slowdown on original hardware, which made parts of it borderline unplayable (sub-10 fps, tons of dropped inputs). Emulation lets you speed up the processor and fix that. That's cool.
so the cool thing- it was determined to be a bug. They fixed it. I re-burned a chip with the repaired software and it runs much much better!

Expanding on what I said before, there are a number of games with mods, patches, etc. that improve the experience. Some of these can be applied on real hardware, but obviously it's much easier through emulation.
  • ESPN NFL 2k5 The greatest football game ever made has mods that update the rosters, UI, and more.
  • Goldeneye 007 XBLA Fans have created a patch that fixes most of the remaining issues in the port, like missing textures or music issues. As someone who played this game on his 13" CRT when he got an N64 for Christmas in 1999, playing this in Xenia is easily the definitive Goldeneye experience.
  • Gran Turismo 4. The Spec II mod came out this year and offers a number of improvements. Combining this with the HD texture packs in PCSX2 makes the game look like the PS3 port we never got.
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild Playing in CEMU gives you the requisite improvements you expect from emulation, like much higher frame rates and resolution, but there's also been a massive mod scene for this game that has resulted in a number of genuine upgrades to the experience. Better balancing, no weapon degradation, and more are available.
  • Metroid Prime Trilogy There's a special version of Dolphin called Primehack that makes the Metroid Prime games work perfectly with mouse and keyboard. It feels like playing PC ports.
  • Phantasy Star Generations 1/2 These remakes never saw a western release, but translation patches have been created.
  • Rock Band 3 The Deluxe mod is easy to install and enhances almost every aspect of the game. It's also easy to add songs to RPCS3, making this the best way to play Rock Band in 2024.
  • Soul Calibur III The Arcade Edition mod is essential, and basically fixes the game.
  • Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE The western release of this game was heavily censored. As is tradition, community members created a patch to fix this censorship, making the Wii U version running under CEMU the definitive experience.

What is this, exactly? A brief Google search tells me there’s a PS2 version mod that had some game-breaking glitches in a version released in 2020, and then a way to emulate the actual arcade edition that seems to be more recent.

Mega Man Legends on duckstation: 3x native (Steamdeck) awesome crt shader. And mapped shooting to RT and turning to right analog stick. Also fixing the texture wobble.

Good shit!

I wasn't aware of this. Any link to the patch?

Can you play these rhythm games well? Do you use guitar or just the controller?

Xenoblade 2 and 3 on emu in 4k is like what the games are supposed to look like, the pixelated mess on actual switch hardware is a shame for those awesome worlds.

I think the majority of time i'd rather play on real hardware. I don't care about upping it from 30fps to 120 or whatever, or 490p to 4k. But yeah there are a few games so broken it sadly is the best way to play them. It's even sadder when we get unwanted remasters/rereleases nonstop, when there are these few broken games that could actually use them.

I was about to play Onimusha 3 debating if i should play PCSX2 with mods or PC with fixes for this reason.

You can use what you want, RPCS3 supports all the things, even the Mics, so you can do the singing stuff too! For guitar controllers you can still find plenty of Wii guitars out there since they mass produced the most, and then just grab a $15 adapter to switch it into any console mode you want. There's also the Forntnite Guitars, they'll work too.
