I think Utopia was one of the first games of this kind. I played it for weeks back then, it sucked a bit that you couldn't directly attack the enemy but just had to send troops off, while the enemies could attack you. Other than that it was just great. The research really kept you playing, as well as learning more and more about the enemy through the attacks.
K240 was very similar except that it was on asteroids.
