Valdis Story: Abyssal City on Steam

Some of those jumping switch puzzles had me in full on rage mode though.
Yep. occasionally unreliable controls paired with *incredibly tight* requirements can be a rage-inducing combo.
Admittedly, I passed every single puzzle I crossed so far, so they are not impossible, but Holy Christ if they didn't make me suffer for it here and there.

These timing based platform sections are going to be the end of me
I thought so too, but so far I got 'em all, haha. But yeah some I retried like 20+ times.

That said, those with the pixel-jump-perfect requirements are all for optional content (armours, usually, and I vary between about 2-3 sets depending on the area/boss so they're not all that good), at least, so don't feel so bad about skipping them. Those timed platforming sections required to progress usually give you a lot more leeway.

A few tips for those just starting out (spoiler-tagged as a precaution for those who want to go in fully blind, but there's nothing spoilerish, just a few tips that might save you some pain):

- Revisit the elder at Tagrus Village at least once or twice after the initial encounter;
- Do buy the weird doll from the kid in Hrukk, but not TOO early, you might give yourself a really difficult obstacle (I bought it after getting the Demon Key myself and I was fine);
- Don't go into the flooded prison unless you already have the Divine Key (I raged so much at the platforming there, until I finally made it to the top only to find it locked... asfdgatgdesgfdhf);
- If you find Magus difficult and are playing as Reina, invest in the guard-break skill.

- Do buy the weird doll from the kid in Hrukk;

Aw hell no. I got it, had to traverse through the
place where Raven is summoned to progress the story and had to spend the next 30 minutes figuring out how to kill him while being severely underleveled. Man, fuck that fight and fuck the fact that there's no way to get past there once you have the doll without fighting.
Fuck it right in it's ear.

That being said, I'mma agree with others though, the boss fights in this game are some of the best of this genre that I've seen in a while. Just really challenging, based on skill and (sometimes) tight controls. Different builds need different strategies. Just super fun.

Loving this game so far. Picked it up due to the steam sales and have been chipping away at it. My biggest problem a few hours in, is finding where i'm supposed to go next. I wish there was a better map system, as well as a notification of which rooms still contain treasure similar to Super Metroid.

Some of those jumping switch puzzles had me in full on rage mode though.

Yeah, I think the map system should be more helpful. I get lost a lot too.

I agree with the bolded part, a map showing the connected places could work great in this game.

Yeah a global map would help, agreed.

Hmm, I guess that could be a problem if you buy it too early and need to cross that place to progress. I didn't have a problem with that boss, he hit hard but I could easily outlive him. I'll amend my tip then.

I almost S ranked every boss minus the last and the second (got an A on the second).

Great game, and my favorite metroidvania since DoS imo. The boss design could use some work though, as in strategy. Depending on the build (mine was STR), you can destroy most bosses without them even touching you. Only gripe I have is that bosses remain in hit stun for far too long. Also, not a spoiler, but the final boss is anti-climactic, and is very similar to the two bosses that come before it. Another thing I dislike aboit the bosses, remembering the final, is the enemy spawn when fighting said bosses. Aside from that, when you let the bosses do their thing, they are really well designed, and are found in abundance.

Can't wait for a sequel to this game, seeing how it was in the top 3 on steam sale for some time.

Are you playing on GodSlayer?

No I played on the difficulty below it, though to be fair, some bosses took 2-3 hours to S rank. Watching videos though, what I said is still valid.

I'm still shocked how little attention this game gets compared to say, Dust. Top notch quality and I'm listening to the soundtrack a lot lately as well.

I'll probably give S-ranking a shot soon, I did pretty poorly the first time around on normal.

Game is downright amazing. I picked it up blind during the sale, and holy shit thank god I did. Brings me back to the glory days of the SNES era. Feels like something Quintet might make (because of the theme).

I am doing mainly Agility and Luck. Once I picked up the dagger and bow weapon, my damage is going through the roof with the backstab bonus + stealth spell + auto-crit on first attack from stealth.

Just beat it, gonna replay as the sword dude, what are the major differences between the difficulties?
The claims I've seen are more minions on bosses, regular enemies getting more advanced skills earlier and all enemies have more hp. Exp required to level increases as difficulties get higher.

Thanks! Started on veteran on Wyatt, seems like there are more normal enemies so far if I'm not imagining it.

Hard to find info for this game :(

I finished the game the other night. Play time clocked in just under 13 hours. I really enjoyed the game but I finished it kind of mad because the Eye of Alagath fight was so goddamn hard, even on normal (it's an optional boss fight location in The Hollows). I had watched a video of a guy absolutely destroying this boss but he had some weapon that I never found and was doing like 5x more damage than I would do despite my stats being higher than his.

has anyone got this to work with Dinput controls?

EDIT: using xbox360ce to get my controller working... however, the game can't boot unless the controller is plugged in. any advice?

This is the first game to make me rage hard in a long time and 99% of the time its because of damage knock back a la Castlevania. I can't stop playing though. Great game.

Hahaha, I'm glad I'm not the only one. The game feels way tougher than any of the recent Metroidvania type games I've played. I'm not in love with all of the timed platforming stuff, but it IS satisfying when you finally execute them perfectly.

I hear you! I was going through my hard difficulty S rank run, the two optional bosses were a bit tough even with
Teachings of the Life Blade
. I can't imagine how patient I'd had to be without it and trying to finish those fights would have been brutal.

The kicker for me was the last boss. I couldn't for the life of me get S for time so that leaves combat to master. The inability to chain a long combos on him meant that I pretty much had to not get hit a lot. With all the feral enemies throw at you, the constant teleporting, and projectiles, it took me about 2 hours to finally nail it. Of course I end up missing an item for one of the achievements, that'll be fun looking for it!

Got the game during the steam sale and I'm highly impressed. It's pretty smooth and the combat seems fine-tuned. I like the difficulty progression too, but the best surprising bit for me was the music. Totally got me sunk into the gameplay.

This game deserves a lot more buzz than it's gotten. I'm loving the art style & controls, but the knock back from taking damage can indeed be very infuriating at times.

The moment the game clicked with me and I fell in love with it was when I jumped off the wall vs the fire demon boss and chucked an ice spear at him mid air knocking him out of his tornado animation. The bosses in the game really do give me Mega Man Zero vibes. Also the assassin angel boss in the sewers that goes invisible. They leave it for you to figure out you can attack the pipes and fill the room with water, after the room is flooded you can see where he running at all times. Lots of neat little things :D

Wow! That's a nice touch, I wonder how many more details I missed. D:

Hopefully I will be playing this by the weekend, looks right up my alley.

Yeah, typically they'll get 100% from their site if there's a Humble Store widget or something.

Steam (and others) take 30%.

I know I am late on this, but does this also applies if you get a steam code from buying it from their site? Would guess Valve got their 30% if I activated that code?

Valve only gets the 30% cut if it was sold through Steam store, the developers are free to generate how many keys they want and sell in their store and Valve doesn't get a cut from it.

Awesome! Never spending a penny ever again on steam in other words :)

Edit: Do you have sources on this? Just want to make sure that my money do indeed go to the indies that make the games :)

Just beat the game on Normal, with S in all bosses and 100% map completion. Loved the combat, and having invincible dashes that you can use almost anytime to extend combos was really satisfying. The bosses were mostly fun to fight too (but I really hated Eye of Myrgato and the last boss). I didn't really feel compelled to experiment with all the options available to me (I basically pumped most of my stat points in to Strength, so most of the armour and accessory choices I made were to complement that), and I found myself unable to find a assist I enjoyed using. I ended up with the guy that buffs your attack. Looking forward to try Reina on my next playthrough.

Near the end of my playthrough
everyone in the last town disappeared.
I thought it was a bug at first, but it turns out that some things in the game change depending on how long the clock has run.

The story and world-building didn't leave much of an impression on me. The characters weren't really memorable, and the fact that most of their names were difficult to pronounce wasn't helping.

And I keep thinking Wyatt's jacket looks like from Attack on Titan.

Wow that's a cool detail. I had no trouble with knowing where he was, because I was using the skill that causes enemies to bleed on crit, and the bloodspurt animation revealed him to me. Another boss with an interesting counter is the one in the Guardian temple. Normally if you keep wailing away at him he gets a circle on him that grows and eventually explodes. If you enchanted your weapon with ice this effect is nullified.

I don't get one thing. People keep talking about how they "SS'd" all those bosses.
Are you all THAT good to perfect them all at your first try or is there some way I must have missed to try a boss once again if you fail to get a good score?

You can go to the menu and reload a save if your rank is too low. It takes quite a few reloads for some of the tougher bosses.

I'm a couple hours into it and it's a real mixed bag for me. I love it that it's one of the few recent games with the "metroidvania" label that truly captures those aspects. The music is great, and the skill tree, leveling, and equipment systems seem interesting.

But something about the controls seems off, which is murder considering how much precision the game demands at almost all times. The continual use of the edge-hang on jumps is annoying (just make the ledges closer instead of having to hang on EVERY SINGLE ONE). Also, the dash/cancel mechanic is neat but seems inconsistent - some enemies you can't dash through (poison boss?), and the cooldown changes at times that I can't figure out (cooldown is short for normal enemies, but against bosses it's way longer?).

I'll get back to it soon, because I want to like it more than I do.

The dashing takes some time to get used to, and it's annoying when you accidentally press down when jumping and your character just snaps downward because the game thinks that's what you meant to do xD but it's precise and definitely workable, near the end of the game I was getting pretty skilled at using the "skill cancel" dashing. I'm not sure what you mean by cooldown; the cooldown on the skill cancel doesn't change, but you do have a skill that makes it free of use when you're in focus mode. And I'm pretty sure you can dash through everything, though I don't remember trying to dash through the poison boss so maybe he's a weird exception.

I accidentally beat the game the other day.... lol. I had the divine key, and I recalled a few areas locked by it, so I started exploring, but I accidentally went to what was the final part of the game.
I had found both Eyes previously but they seemed invincible, so I had given up, and just went into that flooded prison part. Wow that boss is tough, but okay, I won... uh oh now
I have to escape and... whoops, ending scene and credits? Haha.

Luckily beating the game didn't override my last save, so I just loaded up my save after the credits and I could resume my exploration. Gonna try to revisit the whole map in case there's a locked door I neglected and try the Eyes again.

Any suggestions on an Assistant to use against the Eyes? They seem kinda useless, do pitiful damage and all, and the one that heals you heals very little and has a long cooldown, making him pretty useless. I found the Mercenary and spent all my 3 coins on him, but he seems so weak and has no range? I usually use the wolf for the MP recovery or the boomerang dude against trash mobs (he can also stun enemies sometimes which helps comboing them), but maybe I should try someone else.

I liked Faolan (mana regen) after I crafted the Armor of the Grey Knight in the
Prison town if you killed the Yeti early
. Since I could never get the hang of avoiding every hit, the armour's mana shield effect along with status resistances proved to be quite useful. Though even without that piece of gear, it was great knowing I can more freely spend my mana instead of hoarding it.

Reize's (double boomerangs) skill effectively attacking in two directions and in a large area was a versatile assist.

One thing to keep in mind is attacking does not let the cooldown timer start.

I didn't have too many issues with edge hanging after I broke the habit of jumping into environmental hazards so I don't have much to say there. The knockback while fighting on tiny platforms over two screen fall on the other hand...

As for the poison boss, what were you trying to dash through? The bubbles? You're better off just patiently waiting for them to fall below you than charging into them. The most aggressive thing I did there was to put myself onto the furthest platform away from the boss as he was shooting them up into air. Once he does, I'll charge straight for him and smack him with a combo and immediately get to safe ground where I can dodge any stray bubbles. I don't recall any issues dashing through the boss as I usually did it anyways to avoid the plant add from biting me.

That sort of happened to me too. I really thought the game would have at least another dungeon to it.

As for an assist for the Eyes, I would be looking more for utility than damage. If you don't have access to the armour I mentioned above, I guess you could stick with Reize if it helps starting/extending combos when the bosses try to block. Or maybe Bulwark for the extra power and freeze effect if that works on them. Don't forget to level them too (max is 5 I believe)!

I'm really enjoying this game but 'Normal' difficulty is more like 'Easy'. I wish I had started on a harder difficulty. I'm even beating bosses in the wrong order, it doesn't matter, they don't hit hard enough I think.

I played with Reina on normal myself, it was fine for me but I'm not that good at these kinds of games. Beat both eyes, took a couple of tries. Then I restarted on Hard with Wyatt and it seems easier, somehow. Is playing with Reina harder generally, or did I just get much better at the game? XD

I like this Game.
Its really fun.

What I dont like about the Game though are the "times". Like
after playing for xx hours, Magus just disappears, or if you beat the Yeti too late it seems you cant rescue some people anymore...

It's set up like that to reward early exploration and give the game some replayability. When you unlock the no death time attack/score attack mode doing all the stuff as early as possible is a requirement and makes some of them pretty damn challenging.

I am normally against the concept of achievements and trophies because 95% of the time it's stupid shit, but I have to say, the Steam achievements for this game are quite something, and definitely require extreme skills. I won't be getting them because I am not skilled enough and never will be, but it's an actual achievement to "platinum" this for sure.
