Valdis Story: Abyssal City on Steam

As someone who backed the project, I can fully say that you should play this game. It is exceedingly fun, the combat is a blast and it will be getting more support as the days go by since we just voted for another character to add to it.

The story seemed fairly...generic from the intro but the dialogue and such more than makes up for it and draws you into something that's actually pretty cool.

Like others I also had way too much fun trying to get high ranks on the bosses and figure out how I could beat them fast and efficiently.

The only complaintI had was that there's very little in the way of explaining so new abilities or magic could often go under-utilized or unused until I figured them out a lot of times by accident. I mean, I didn't know you could dash for like half the game and when I found out had to go back and do all those goddam timed forcefield puzzles.

I'm really glad I funded this game. I'm on my phone so don't feel like typing up great detailed reams of pages but could if given the opportunity.

...just wish they'd send me my damn Steam key already. I don't wanna use Desura.

If you got through the Humble Bundle site it added a steam key on your listing there.

What difficulty?
Normal.

I'm starting with the other character now, she's definitely harder to use so far.

Here are the (still in progress) changes for the next patch coming up.

• Restore Default Controls added to control config.
• Due to severe lag on some machines, Direct input will be disabled until a solution is found for the issue.
• Skill cancel key bind added for gamepads.
• Double warlock room in Ziggurat is now Crystal locked instead of Barrier locked.
• Fixed skill text that still said "sheath charge" rather then "skill cancel."
• Fixed instances where a Templar could push you through a wall.
• Various adjustments to [Aegis] spell.
• Skill cancel can now be used to escape air juggles.
• Music and SFX volume control added.
• Slightly increased snap radius for ledge grabbing.
• Gernot's special move is now evadable, but he can cast it more frequently.

I really wanted to like this, but it just didn't do it for me. If you're into deep combat mechanics then check it out, you may find something you like. But as a fan of platformers I was really disappointed. I wrote a review here: http://bit.ly/1cLvQFI

Started this game today, and I have to say that it is a BLAST. I retried the first boss twice on the third difficulty, but still got an S. Does it affect the overall rank when I finish the game?

I am surprised that this game is not selling more. This may be the most polished indie game I have played till now, and the best looking.

Wyatt is also a really funny character. When you encounter the giant...3rd boss? And he just goes "Nice to see my string of good luck is intact" it gave me a good laugh.

I'm sorry it didn't work for you, but nobody should ever look at these types of games for their platforming. :)

Yeah, I thought he was going to be a pretty lame anime brooding type, but he grew on me.

Reina is pretty bland, on the other hand.

There's a demo at the game's website by the way. I just tried it out and was surprised by the combo system. The game it feels most similar to is probably Dust: An Elysian Tail, but with somewhat lower production values. The only thing that bums me out is that the game is 720p-only.

I actually prefer this game over both Dust and Guacamelee, as it feels more like the CV games.

EDIT: I am surprised this game is not getting more love on GAF. This is some high quality gaming here guys.

I'm about done with my Reina game, still on normal though. I was going to just speed run it for the most part, but it morphed into boss practice (the rewards for getting A and S Rank on bosses are awesome) and doing 100% practice, so that I can be prepared for doing an S/S Godslayer run.

The game is still incredible, maybe even more so now that I'm better understanding everything.

Now the hard part, deciding between this and Volgarr for my indie game of the year.

SO GOOD.

if I retry a boss, does it take away from my rank? Or if I get an S after retrying a boss, it still stays?

Yep. I retried all the damn time, maybe like 5 times on the 2nd boss before I got his pattern down and S ranked fine thereafter.

I don't think retries affect boss rankings. What it does affect is your overall battle rank at the end of the game and each retry deducts five minutes from a couple of time-exclusive events (which sound like they're being reworked in the next patch anyway).

Since most bosses are a couple of screens from a save point, I always just reload.

Welp, it looks like the requirements for end-game S Ranks are pretty strict.

That's going to make those achievements all the more fun.

Anyway, the next patch looks pretty huge (the map addition was my suggestion from the Steam forum).

That update/patch list looks nice. Wondering if I should hold off on completing the game until it hits.

Kinda started to dislike the game the further I got on God Slayer. Just fought some fire boss and not digging the fact that most bosses are accompanied by obnoxious/never ending junk enemies (the Abandoned Gardens boss was the biggest trash fest ever). Since there's like zero invincibility time when hit you get knocked around like there's no end. The boss arenas (usually due to the enemy reinforcements) are crazy crowded with shit flying everywhere. Also, I noticed something weird about level ups. I feel like the stat bonuses you get at level up are completely random. I could have sworn I saw two completely different sets of increase for one particular stat for the same level up. I noticed this because I kept reloading my game after not getting an S-rank on a particular boss fight. I'm also curious if there's diminishing returns in stat distribution. Would like some clear information on this stuff.

Enemy variety is weak too. Enemy re-skin central. I'm kind of sick of fighting the hooded assassin guys. Although, being an indie game and all, I didn't expect much in this department. I do find myself addicted to "perfecting" these bosses as much as I can. The one fire boss I just fought took FOREVER to S-rank, but I learned new ways to deal with him as I fought him and it was pretty satisfying to pull off that perfect attempt. A little disappointed in the mapping/stage design too. It's pretty much an empty corridor fest with simple gates/barriers in place for backtracking/progression purposes. The most interesting "puzzle" are these timed gates that require you to be strict on your traversal/platforming abilities.

Cool game, will probably get better with updates/patches. Game's got the right ideas and a lot of heart though. I almost would have preferred lighter RPG elements because I feel like the game relies more on your combat skills than level ups and such. There's just too much going on with the equipment and it's hard to tell if anything is even making a difference sometimes. Each piece of equipment has like all these crazy weird passive bonuses and such. I would have much preferred a clean Ys approach where equipment and level ups feel tighter and more important. Finding new equipment in this game doesn't feel special to me for some reason.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Glad to hear some positive impressions of the game -- seems like it has potential. I'll pick the game up on GOG in the near future, but I'm kinda tempted to wait for the patch first...

Don't let that hold you up, the game is already pretty amazing.

The patch should be any day now anyway (it also received a similar sized patch before the Steam release).

Ah man, comparisons to Volgarr means I have to pay attention.

Volgarr doesn't get enough respect on GAF. It's goddamned brilliant.
Well, the comparison is only in how much I like both of them.

They're both brilliant, but for a lot of different reasons.

Well this does not sound well at all. Till now on Veteran I have S, A, S, and S. But with retries for each boss. Some bosses, like the second and fourth require a good amount of traverse before you reach them, making reloading difficult.

Also, thank god they have an individual button for canceling. This one thing has been very frustrating when fighting bosses or going through precise platforming sections.

Up until now, this could probably be the best indie game I have played. Really good game, and over all well made.

Having smaller enemies with the bosses in indeed very frustrating. This makes S ranking bosses a lot more difficult. Should have been dismissed altogether. Just now I finished the Garden boss you are mentioning, and I was cussing at the screen the whole time. But the good thing is, the flying enemies only appear when the boss
solidifies himself, and the enemies then die with one hit (in veteran at least)
.

For the stage design, it is actually really good. It is not just a simple straight line that constantly repeats. You get some interesting platforming sections that you need to traverse through while learning how to deal with enemies. Stage design is similar to IGA's castlevania games, and this game in particular really reminds me of DoS.

Grabbed this on Desura a while ago. Liked it overall. About the only thing that rubbed me the wrong way was how dashing was laid out on the controller. It was super easy to go flying off ledges and into enemies unintentionally. Couldn't find a way to remap that particular ability either. It lead to a lot of swearing on my part. Other than that, though, a very nice game. =)

I just did a "no save" and "no upgrade or change equipment" run using nothing but intelligence stat, that was interesting.

Actually, the only thing that was hard was the poison feral boss (Revan?), but that was because I was being overly aggressive. Once I decided to play defense I beat him soundly.

I still managed to get A and S Rank on everything too.

I think they picked the best mapping in terms of fast, advanced combat, but it will be remappable in the next patch.

Yeah, I started another Magic Build game and thought it would make it much harder. Cue my surprise when I beat the second boss in two cycles because of the Magic Boost magic, the air Darkness spell and the first "dark" armor you get that boosts your next spell after you crit.

Holy shit S Rank.

So for those of you that have played through this, is Normal challenging enough for an initial run? It's not too easy or anything?

Normal Mode has a decent amount of challenge, especially the bosses.

If you are good with Devil May Cry/Bayonetta style battle systems, you could probably start off a little harder.

I would definitely say so. All the bosses have their tricks to them and tells and whatnot but until you figure them out, it can be REALLY frenetic. Especially when they start altering their game plan.

I'd say the normal enemies can be decently challenging. If you get cocky and a bit unlucky you can wipe in certain rooms REALLY fast.

I'd say Normal with Wyatt is a decent intro to the game. When you start getting into other characters, it can be a bit...tricky.

Maybe I should give this a try. I really dug the combat style shown in the gameplay trailer. And judging from the comments, it seems that the game has a challenging curve. It's been some time since I got into a game like this, but I'm really tempted to give it a shot. Can anyone tell me btw if it's normal in length?

On the shorter side (relatively) but a lot of replayability. Four different characters with a lot of builds and equipment you can swap around with as well as ranking that affects your stats for each boss and game overall.

First couple times I doubt you'll zoom through it though.

It took me about ten hours on the first shot, five or so for replays.

And yeah, OniBarubary is right, there's a LOT of replayability. With the stat, skill and weapon trees, you can really have a different game even with the same character. If you are an achievement hunter, there's a lot of extra depth to some of those challenges as well. This boss I just fought, I disintegrated him when I was doing a heavy magic build, but on this strength build, I had to play very defensively, it was a much harder fight and with a way different strategy.

What is the max level in this game? I keep seeing screenshots that it is 20. I am afraid that my skills are too spread in the trees, that I don't specialize in anything.

EDIT: Is 1.0.0.21 the beta that can be chosen in the steam menu that is called d_input_test? It is called 1.0.0.21 in the menu, but I am not sure if this is the beta version of that, and not the final. That being said, the skill (cancel) button being something other than down is truly less frustrating.

Umm...am I underleveled at this point? I'm only level 8 and I just ran into
Magus
. I get him/her down to less than a quarter health left and the bullshit starts. The fight is awesome, but this is fucking rough. lol

edit: Fuck it, he's free. Nevermind.

Been playing this, any tips on Magus? My damage kind of suck using Reina and it takes forever to kill the angel thing and the boss, think I got it to like 10% health just hacking away their health repeatedly and died. Annoyingly the angel keeps hovering directly above the boss right below a platform so I can't really combo it well half of the time with all the swords and projectiles flying around.

I haven't installed it yet, but I will lol

Yeah I kinda dislike how little damage I seem to do against bosses. Hrm.
Also that one boss with the electric traps everywhere, fuck that guy. Got a garbage rank but didn't feel like fighting him (ever) again.
He isn't hard (he barely attacks) but he teleports and the traps are shit.

I played the first two hours and it is awesome! Combat is a bit like Dust but a bit deeper and enemies aren't complete pushovers like they were in Dust. The game has been pretty linear thus far but there are tons of places you pass that you can't access until later on.

Do know, some users have issues with certain types of gamepads or controllers. That will reduce the frame rate pretty bad. The devs are actively working on it and there are some workarounds to get it running at a solid 60fps
