Vergil (Devil May Cry 5) | Devious Intent (Analysis Video)

Hey everyone, a decade ago I did several videos spotlighting Vergil's character arc, but I only just got around to finishing off that series, with the addition of DMC5. I think they did a great job wrapping up all of the things they were building up to in the previous games, but I do know some people have issues with the execution of the story. Where did you fall on this topic? Did you want Vergil to have more actual screentime, or were you fine with the way V/Urizen explored his perspective from a unique angle? Where would you like the story of the series to go from here? Personally, I'd be fine if Vergil wasn't in a DMC6. I don't think the series needs to revolve around him as much after this game. Not sure if it should be a solo-Nero game, but maybe him and someone new as a playable character. Let me know what you think!

I was disappointed in the execution. But the intent to wait and see him revealed was cool, it just wasn't enough.

Not really sure where a sequel could go either way.

Considering neither Kamiya nor Itsuno are with Capcom, I hope nowhere.

Kamiya and his new studio are technically working with Capcom on the Okami sequel, so I guess there's an opportunity there if he wants to, but Itsuno and his team fleshed out the series from DMC2 onwards, so that would probably be weird.

Kamiya has said he would like to remake the first game, so that's hopefully where it goes. Remake DMC1-4 for the next 10 years.

I don't think it's impossible to make a good DMC game without Kamiya or Itsuno. I'm not too interested in remakes of any of the games, but I guess 1 would be pretty different if it was remade.

It feels like the fans and the developers both want him to be, at the same time, the anti-hero/likeable villain with the complicated backstory, and also the cool villain/secret boss/secret playable akuma-like character where you never know if he is going to show up in the next entry or not.

However, it feels impossible for both to be a thing at the same time, so his own story suffers from this. It also feels like the writers can't expand upon it too much or else he loses some of that mystique and cool factor that is essential to Vergil.

I think the best thing here would be for him to have his own secondary campaign or game, that has nothing at all to do with Dante or Nero. He needs his own journey in another place (and maybe another time) entirely so that he isn't used yet again as the convenient important plot point for the next game.
