Very concerned mom rants against Vince Staples 'Norf Norf".

As someone who loves rap, current rap music does glorify hard drug usage and misogynistic treatment of women, I'm sorry. That isn't anything new, and I have a hard time rationalizing it/squaring it with my taste for the music; Future's one of my fav rappers for example.

That said, if ANYONE in rap should get shit on for this, its definitely not Vince, who is really just a storyteller painting a bleak portrait of certain aspects of life.

As someone who likes rap you should know not to make nonsensical generalizations over the entire genre. Kendrick and Chance are both big now and neither glorify those things. I can't tell if it's a joke that you mention Future, as if he represents all rap

When did I say ALL rap?

Yeah those lyrics are terrible and he's not a good rapper anyway, she should be more upset by that.

You said "current rap", making a blanket statement. Those are two big current rappers who don't. My point is making any sort of generalization over the entire industry makes no sense. Current rap doesn't have any singular message any more than 90s rap did, just because gangsta rappers were among the most popular

Cosign. People are acting like My Nigga didn't get played every hour on the hour. I personally don't have a problem with that song but most rap these days certainly does what you says it does. I mean even certified pop acts like The Weeknd wrap their entire persona up in that way. I don't have a problem with it since I actually love doing drugs and don't have kids. I have no rationalization issue aside from the misogynistic behavior. People ain't got no problem with the music and then get mad when I refer to a woman as a bitch or a ho.

EDIT: cherry picking kanye and chance (or even anderson paak) come on. PBY obviously has plenty of knowledge about those artists lol.

My brotha.

But yes, Chance & Kendrick are among MY favorite current rappers because they usually don't resort to the lcd's of the genre.

I mean as far as drug usage is concerned . . . I mean so? Sometimes its like everyone wants to cover their ears and pretend a large portion of North America's populace does not do drugs all the fucking time.

It's not uncommon. Rappers in their late teens to early 30s talking about doing weed molly and lean is not odd considering that's what the fuck the people in their age range do.

I find this criticism so tired. It's like we divorce reality from music only when we talk about rap.

At first I thought she meant Pinky and his constant usage of narf.

I'm so out of touch with modern music 😥

Totally. That doesn't actually bother me that much, considering drug usage in music has basically been a staple across all popular genres for years. That said, I think its disingenuous to say some aren't glorifying it.

The misogyny is actually harder for me to grapple with, because even if it is some mix of autobiographical or pure fiction/power fantasy, it still seems hard to sweep that away in light of the world we live in. I think rappers like Kamaiyah and other dope women artists, who sort of flip the script on the power fantasy/sex relationship make me feel better about it as some sort of fictional character. That stuff just isn't as prevalent unfortunately.

If you think about it, gay slurs were CRAZY prevalent in rap up to a few years ago, and that stuff has all but dried up in the mainstream.

That's what I'm saying. Who cares? University studemts literally glorify alcohol consumption. The vast bulk of the populace will try weed. People do coke because it exits your system quickly. Whenever we talk about rap all these realities suddenly just get shoved aside like its 30 people on the planet that do this. I find this criticism to be so poor.

The misogyny is bad at times no arguments. But the most misogynistic music is often super mainstream. Its literal superfluos fantasy as you said. Nobody wants to listen to a Kendrick/ Vince Staples heavy album at the club. No one is trying to hear dance with the devil on the radio. Like its not good but the most mainstream bangers are disposable exactly becauae they are superfluous. The bulk of people (not you for clarification) would be more offended hearing Alright or January 28th on the radio than OOOUUU.

Cause unsurprisingly music grows with change in culture.

Never heard of this guy before but the song is pretty decent. Haven't been a that big of a fan of rap in a few years but I'm digging this song for sure.

There's 1001 movies glamorizing the domestic terrorism of the old West and the Mafia, but a nigga can't rap about his rough teenage years without scrutiny.

I understand that the visceral nature of rap is what's so harrowing about it for some. But as with any explicit media, it's up to the parents to police their children's exposure to objectionable subject matters; and failing that, properly contexualize the media.

that's been far too much work for parents since the era of Elvis and his gyrating pelvis.

Just finished Summertime 06 - dude is good, thanks to all who recommended it. Gonna check Hell Can Wait next.

At first I thought she meant Pinky and his constant usage of narf.
That was my first thought, too. I thought it was a joke song or something.

Oh man, I want this remix now!

After hearing Rob Paulson(voice of Pinky) interview many of the veterans in that industry I wouldn't be surprise if they did it. They love that type of fucking around. They'll omit or replace all the mentions of the n-word with something silly.

Hey we should just open a rap is crap thread so that the people who want to do that can just be in their own special section.

I'm very concerned about the four little girls she's raising. She straight up recited those lyrics when her kids were wandering the house lol... Instead of being a grown up and talk to her children and ask them what they think... she chooses to be emotionally cerebral about petty things.

"When I was a kid, I was listening to Britney Spears and Christina Aguilera." L....m...a..o. As if those should be the models for our youth? Music is music is art is music is nothing. There are real atrocities happening in the world, but terse lyrics are the last straw... Her kids will grow up with huge opinions and a small world view. It's not even funny. Just sad.

More and more I find Anthony Fantano to be really shallow shit. Dude never goes beyond talking about the vague "sound." He should really focus more on lyrics or quoatables. Whenever he quotes some shit it's like the worst fucking line ever.

Chance has a few homophobic lines in there tho:

Chance, acid rapper, soccer, hacky sacker
Cocky khaki jacket jacker
Slap-happy faggot slapper

I just find him to be obnoxious. Which is annoying because his general scores are basically how I feel most of the tine. I like Deadendhiphop way more. Shit is more real and actually how I feel. Their Views review was the most real shit ever.

I liked the song. 11 year old's shouldn't be listening to it. It's an open question of whether or not it's prudent to air music like that on public airwaves.

faggots are cigs tho and slapping is smoking

Double entendre. I mean, for all you know he could be referring to hitting a bundle of sticks and rocks or a British delicacy, but there's really only way to take it if you're listening to that line for the first time.
