[VGC] The Last of Us Part 2 on PC will require a PSN account to play

Sony has confirmed that when The Last of Us Part 2 comes to PC in April, it will require a PSN account to play.

The game, which is now available to wishlist on Steam and the Epic Games Store, will be released on April 3.

It’s the latest Sony PC title to require a PSN account, a decision that’s proved controversial in the past.

While this has been the case for some multiplayer titles, such as the now-defunct Concord, the inclusion in strictly single-player titles has previously attracted the ire of players.

Other than the requirement of a second account, the fact that PSN is not available in many countries would, in theory, preclude players in many regions from playing the game.

The backlash to the PSN inclusion in Helldivers 2 was such that Sony itself u-turned and removed the requirement, saying at the time it was “learning what’s best for PC players.”

When the requirement was added for the PC version of God of War Ragnarok, one player even created a mod which removed the requirement, but it was taken down at the creator’s request, in case of action from Sony.

The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered was released on PS5 in January 2024, and enjoyed a Metacritic score of 90. As well as a remastered version of the 2020 PS4 adventure, it includes a trio of ‘Lost Levels’, which feature playable sequences previously cut from the game, as well as a roguelike survival mode called No Return.

Players who pre-order the PC version will receive two in-game items early, the ammo capacity upgrade, and the crafting training manual.

VGC’s The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered review called it “the best way to play one of the best games ever made”.

HBO has premiered the latest look at Season 2 of its live-action The Last of Us show, and confirmed a release month of April.

Trophy support?

I don't want to start consoles wars here, but PC gamers are such babies.

I bought space marine 2 on steam. The game forced me to link and log into epic to play online.
I don't remember that being the case. You sure it doesn't just create a dummy account to use their online services and anti-cheat? I think Elden Ring did a similar thing.

The outrage at PSN requirements is getting exhausting.

I bought space marine 2 on steam. The game forced me to link and log into epic to play online. Nobody complained about that on this website.

Yet when Sony does it, it's the worst. I'm pretty sure it's just the Xbox warriors who now pretend PC is the best.
The game doesn’t force you to link and log in to Epic. It requires Epic Online Services as an anti-cheat measures and installs it on your computer.

game doesn't even have a multiplayer mode, why the hell a PSN logging account is needed to play a single player game?

Helldivers at least had that excuse because of crossplay, here there is no reason...

But when I play Space Marine 2 on PS5 I don't have to login to anything. It is optional. That seems to be the norm in most cases on console. I think if more console gamers had to log into other services then they would probably feel the same as PC gamers.

And yet it was sold without the requirement for a good while.
It said it was required from the start though, just because of an issue with the game/account shite it was disabled by the devs.

Uses Kernel Level Anti-Cheat

Easy Anti-Cheat - Requires manual removal after game uninstall

Requires agreement to a 3rd-party EULA

Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 EULA
Yeah, doesn't say anything about needing to log in.

Or is it just one of Phil's balls in my throat?

Correct, and I'm assuming the 'issue' was someone at Arrowhead discovering that with a mandatory PSN requirement, it wouldn't be possible to sell the game in a lot of countries.

They ended up selling the game for a few months(?) without the requirement, and when the publisher demanded it be added, that's when the outrage happened.

However if the requirement is there from the start, there's no chance of sales in locations without PSN so it's not an issue, in that sense at least.

That's a bad assumption

Sure, but not that far off if the guy is admitting to turning off linking to players play the game, enabling linking would have definitely prohibited some purchases and players.

I do have a part to play. I am not blameless in all of this - it was my decision to disable account linking at launch so that players could play the game

I cry about Xbox and hate PlayStation.

this is true, you can see alot of narrative here.
Some of the xbox fan boys seldom talks about xbox and always compare PC with playstation now

I personally never understood the outrage. They want to be able to tie your account to trophies and other things. It's literally the only way they can do it. A lot of people seemed shocked about it and got so up in arms about it. I wasn't sure why many people weren't expecting such a thing to happen. Especially when they talked about adding trophy support and everything.
