Of course they wouldn't do that, but vague communication definitely happens. Stuff like " well, if you only go with 2GB Of RAM, you might not be competitive. Think about increasing it". Said by the right person, it will definitely deliver the message without technically breaking any in place NDAs.

Nintendo caught a blue ocean market with the Wii. They tried it again with the Wii U and so far it looks like they whiffed pretty badly. Now MS is trying to do the same thing with the X720 and Kinect.

If they miss on the incredibly fickle "blue ocean" they're targeting because of iOS and Android devices (what many attribute to the Wii's sudden and abrupt stall) then all they have is an under powered system with features no core gamer cares about.

Meanwhile Sony is taking the "safe" play by going for the proven, reliable core gamer market full force. If they really do have tangible hardware superiority and are at a competitive price standpoint they'll be well on their way to a very strong platform with no additional risks tied onto them.

Also, if MS does go with the currently rumored specs there will be a tangible difference between PS4 and X720 games. Since both use similar hardware and are x86 systems built on AMD/ATi GPU technology it will actually scale amazingly easy, making the power gap consistently apparent in pretty much all cross platform titles, not to mention how much better Sony's first party releases will clearly be.

The difference between nintendos approach with the WiiU and MS's approach with the 720 is that MS are not soley relying on the blue ocean stratagy, with proposed specs of 720 3rd party games will still look a very noticeable step up to current gen stuff and the console will still appeal to the 'core' gamer.

Granted there will be poeple who go ''fifa and COD on PS4 are 1080p 2xMSAA and its only 1080p on the 720 so i'am getting the PS4 version''

but like I said those people are a minority compared to families and other people swayed by motion, price and overall package value

I don't believe anyone would be able to soundly state that there were more exclusive titles released from Microsoft than from Sony. If you need links, go to metacritic or gamerankings. To say that titles from Sony were not "better" received is subjective. What are you basing that on? Sales? Factors need to be taken into consideration depending on the discussion. For example, if you're looking at titles that were released early in the cycle and are basing your comment on sales numbers (not ratings), you need to keep the install base at the time in perspective (along with the market you're talking about - U.S. only? Worldwide?). To imply that Microsoft exclusives were better critically and commercially received than Sony exclusives across the board is ridiculous.

Sounds like a revisionist take on history, as GC and Xbox were released much later than PS2, and by that time the PS2 had a sizable lead in userbase. More appropriate comparison would be DC and PS2, regarding on how much the specs and the public conception affected the outcome. I wager the specs will play a more important role now, that the PS4 and XB3 will be released at the same time, as they're essentially competing for the same customers, unlike Nintendo.

Well, according to Metacritic's 2012 data they're pretty much in the same ballpark, both in scores and the amount of titles.

The event that's March 6-7 is the annual Microsoft Research Techfest available only to Microsoft FTEs.

Metacritic actually does an annual Roundup for publishers. For 2012, MS and Sony were pretty close on quantity and quality. It's not nearly as lopsided as some here would believe, mostly because MS publishes lots of quality XBLA titles that "don't count" for some reason.

There are Windows 8 titles that aren't on the 360. It depends on how you want to slice it. Looking back at previous reports from metacritic, some titles don't make their cut due to not being rated or something like that. It makes the comparison more difficult.

Yep.

The number of highly rated games that are on the Xbox 360 and not the PS3 is pretty much the same as the vice versa (highly rated PS3 games that aren't on the Xbox 360).

(The late "Kinect" period of this gen.)

Indie titles aren't included. Mini titles aren't included. There's holes all over the place here.

The discussion always changes in terms of which games one can actually bring up to show how the Xbox still has had many solid "core" games after kinect released. Here is the usual breakdown of the debates.

Step 1: State overall core games.

Step 2: State overall core RETAIL games.

Step 3: State overall core "AAA" RETAIL games.

Step 4: State overall core "AAA" RETAIL GAMES THAT AREN'T SEQUELS.

Oh come on, generally when people are talking exclusive console titles they think of the respective first-party portfolios. Perhaps a better way to put it is to compare just these and not every small indie game.

And then if you don't like Halo or Forza, there's little to interest you. Same can be said for Sony - you don't like Killzone or Gran Turismo but you can at least choose from Uncharted, Heavy Rain, LBP, God of War etc.

And are some of these XBLA titles not on PC as well?

So there are clearly other factors much more important than processing power and visuals. It's worth noting that Microsoft's apparent desire to focus on broader penetration from the very start might also produce a sizable lead in userbase early on - if it works, of course, and it's way too early to discuss anyone's prospects at this point.

Of course there are, when the systems are not released simultaneously, and when they aren't directed to the same demographic.

Did you read and hear many stories about Xbox/GC trumping the PS2 techwise at the time the PS2 was launched? I certainly didn't, which can't be said about DC vs. PS2. The outcome of the race was already obvious when the Xbox & GC arrived.
