It's a smart show but you'd have to be a moron to think "getting it" makes you better than anybody else.
I really hate this aspect of fandom. Also, the misogyny. Rick's a great character but he's not a role model. Anyone who acts like him in real life (like the backwards hat dude in the article) deserves to get his ass beat.

pretty sure its all on tumblr and only spills into youtube because youtube comments are part of the horrible negaverse in which strange angry teenagers exist
i honestly dont see much of this behavior outside youtube comments and i spend all my time on the internet, but then maybe it also exists on twitter which i barely ever use. i dunno, sometimes it makes me feel kinda sheltered in an internet sense. i dont even really see all the bad rick and morty fans despite knowing they are out there

You aren't kidding. The OT here and the main subreddit are much easier to deal with. But the Tumblr fanbase can be as varied from people who draw fun fan art to those who harass teenage girls into suicide attempts for drawing a character too thin.
Rick & Morty is hilarious, and the episodes can have some real emotion and depth tied to them. But pulling some grand philosophical ideas from it other than "nihilism is cool, i guess?" seems insane to me. Plus, Rick is supposed to be this idol, but he's an alcoholic, emotionally broken mess who's tried to kill himself and whose answer for any complicated emotional conflict is to ignore it, act above it, or run away.
For god's sake, the entire reason he turned himself into a pickle is because he didn't want to attend a much-needed family therapy session. Rick's supposed nihilism is just a defense mechanism so he doesn't have to deal with shit.

I got into the show late, watched season 1 & 2 alone in my own bubble. And absolutely loved it. While I have really enjoyed watching season 3 live with everyone else. It does suck to see the attitude some of the fans have. But every show has shitty fans, best to just ignore them I guess. And maybe not write 5 articles a day giving them attention.
It's smarter than most shows in that it directly addresses issues most similar shows tend to ignore, and it does it in creative ways, but yes, you'd have to be pretty full of yourself to subscribe to the "it's for smart people" line. It's no smarter than Adventure Time or Bob's Burgers, really.
Oh, I know Harmon detests parts of the fanbase, but if you follow him on Twitter you'll see that he gets down on himself quite easily.

LiS is the exact kind of game you'd expect from middle-aged Frenchmen trying to emulate American teenagers.
I'm still giddy to see how David Cage handles race relations using androids in Detroit.
Completed LiS when it was free on PS+ a few months ago.
They're all in the game.
Watched a few episodes of R&M and didn't see the big deal. It's just the next thing the internet goes ham for as per.

I'm not a fan of R&M's 'cliffhangerization' of depression where Rick's personality really doesn't have many consequences in the grand scheme of things. I like the show, though, just find that aspect of it highly under-written.
I don't think veganism is compatible with Rickism. He's not afraid to murder an entire pocket universe.

My first exposure to Rick and Morty was when some time ago I was looking up Oscar song performances. One of the most memorable for me was always Elliott Smith for Miss Misery and how standing on stage in his stark white suit and an acoustic guitar he just seemed... so out of place especially compared to the bombastic Celine Dion juggernaut that year. When I looked up the video all the comments were some variant of "TINY RICK!!!" and I had no idea what the hell people were talking about until I googled it. I found it super obnoxious.
A year or two later, I caught up with Rick and Morty. It's a clever show that I enjoy (though I think Community was stronger with its references and allusions but get that this isn't all Harmon) but it's crazy how out of proportion its fanbase blows some of its references and jokes.

That was the ep where Rick turns himself into a teenager (the Tiny Rick) and then to get him to want to transfer back to his old self, Summer makes him listen to Between the Bars and he gets super emotional.
I'd wager that the overlapping Venn diagram of Elliott Smith fans and R&M fans prior to that episode wasn't super huge.
