You know what. I'm not going to say anything. Maybe Biden will do great, maybe it will be a disaster, but after Obama's performance, I'm not talking anyone up or down beforehand.

The way these debates are always framed as if they were a boxing match always makes me wish the two candidates would just get in there and slug it out.

After the ass kicking Obama got in the previous debate this is going to be a very highly watched debate. Make no mistake. The only thing Biden can do in order to win is to go into full out assault mode as 'Crazy Joe'. Call a spade a spade. Call him a liar to his face and go for blood. No mercy. No trying to be the "better" man.

I don't think that'll happen. I expect Biden to be a blubbering mess and get his clock cleaned.

My prediction: Biden is in the middle of giving Ryan a good punch in the gut when he says something so stupid its all the media remembers.

it would measure potential for presidency as much as the current debate format would

I have another bad idea too:

When all the parties announce their official tickets, from that point on the presidential race is every man for himself (or woman!). Whoever gets the most votes is president, runner-up is vice president.

Pretty much. I don't think anyone anticipated for Obama to simply not show up to the first debate, mentally. VP debates don't really matter but I can see many people coming away from this debate and thinking the republican ticket is far more prepared and "ready" than the incumbents.

Biden is going to either say something stupid or ramble incoherently. Ryan will lie his ass off but as Romney proved, it won't matter.

This used to be the way it worked, and then they decided that any system which makes it likely that the heir apparent to the Presidency would have different allegiances and goals than the President would just have the effect of encouraging assassinations.

Aren't 90% of all Bidens gaffes made when he is not speaking about policy but rather speaking to people?

I'm definitely not going to get my hopes up. I'll prepare for a Biden loss.

But oh man I want to see him tear the GOP golden boy a new one so badly. I want to see Ryan practically in tears by the end of it. I hate that lying sack of crap with a passion and I'd love nothing more than to see him ripped into so badly that he'll never be able to sell himself as a wonk ever again.

Perusing the blogs, I get the feeling that Biden is getting overhyped and underestimated at the same time. It should be interesting to see how this plays out.

If Biden doesn't make at least one
penis joke
and 2 other
sexual innuendos
then I will consider it the night a loss
for me

I'd love to see Biden be completely dismissive of Ryan: 'If you and your math and your Ayn Rand are the intellectual vanguard of the GOP, then God help us if you're elected. And if you bring up the $716 billion in Medicare cuts, so help me God, I might just have to tell this audience that you used that SAME $716+ for your so called 'budget'.'

Something like that, anyway. I can dream, can't I?

I predict a result similar to the Romney/Obama debate.

Ryan will win based on appearance, Biden will win on substance. But only the former is important in these things, so Ryan will win.

I don't know why people discount Biden. He's great at connecting with people and pretty passionate. They're actually both passionate so I think at the very least I won't fall asleep.

just another day at fair and balanced lib gaf. great OT.

Why didn't you quote the whole line?

What will play worse -- the dumb stuff Biden says accidentally or the misleading stuff Ryan says intentionally?

Does the first half not fit in with your playing-the-victim narrative?

I'm not one to normally get into this sort of thing but this has been a constant thing with you.

I'm sure that assuming Biden is an idiot has been more than a few people's undoing. Just as a for-instance, was he a bumbling idiot during his Palin debate? Go ahead and underestimate him. But I'm fully expecting a 'Son, this is how it's done' moment or three this time around...

More like the Big F$@*ing Buffoon vs. The Randian from Dairyland. If we're going to be assigning nicknames they should at least be equally deprecating. Otherwise how would we have sufficient trash talk.

Is Biden gonna call out Ryan for the flurry of lies that are bound to come out? Bams didn't do it to Mittens. PEACE.

Why do you consider "The Randian from Dairyland" deprecating? Seems to be neutral and accurate.

Biden's performance in 2008 and to some extent Romney's this past week show that style wins in debates. Biden told all sorts of lies/half-truths in 2008 (most famously how he goes down to some corner diner to talk to the folks that hasn't been there for 20 years) but he comes off as affable and that's ultimately what comes through. I fully expect Biden to outperform expectations until Ryan can somehow get him off his game.

Hopefully the moderator actually moderates for this one.

I'm sure all the moderators have been thoroughly told to not let a debate break out.

Even with the poor Obama performance, I loved the last debate just because it felt like a debate. The back and fourth we got was refreshing.

I expected Biden to put up a better fight than the laughable effort Obama did.

Certainly - it will depend on Ryan for the outcome. If he's deft at calling out any lies Biden throws out and can throw Biden off his game and even goad Ryan into a personal attack, Ryan could win big time. Like Obama, Biden has a record to defend, which is the challenge of incumbency. Biden can't really attack Ryan too much on Medicare because Ryan will simply say "We're running under Gov. Romney's plan, not my plan" much like Romney played the "You don't know what you're talking about" card with Obama.

Likely outcome: draw.

If Biden would just call out the straight lies on the spot rather than waiting for fact-checkers he'd already be way better. Obama just let so many blatant inaccuracies go or was completely ineffective in attacking them. His half-hearted attack on Romney's pre-existing conditions bullshit was one example. I just hope Biden is better prepared.

Felt like an arguing match, rather than a debate. A moderator should never allow someone to interrupt the other person.

Obama acted like a little chickenshit last week. As long as Biden shows a spine, it'll be a better debate.

I hope Obama is pulling a Bobby Fischer after that last one. And ideally Biden will just outright call Ryan a liar. It will be a tougher fight than Palin, however.

I fully expect this debate to go down the same as Biden vs. Palin. Biden has been in politics practically before Ryan was born. Its hard to imagine him going down like Obama did in the first debate.

You want Obama to get upset at the format, disappear for 30 years, and then start ranting anti-Semitic slurs with a beard down to his knees?

*scratches head*

Well, if Ryan follows Romney's example, he'll just say he's never heard of Rand during the debate and pretty much get away with it.

He's renounced Rand repeatedly, especially for her views on organized religion. Makes Objectivism and the modern Republican party strange bedfellows. They can never make up their minds whether she's a saint or a demon.

Yeah, I dunno if I'm remembering it correctly, but he rejects the atheist angle, but sympathizes with the economics and self determination angle.

Or something.

As SNL commented, a Joe Biden that thinks the fate of the party rests on his shoulders is a scary Joe Biden. I wouldnt miss this trainwreck for a million dollars. Bring the crazy, Joe!

This, but he seems to go through phases of accepting it all or accepting none of it whole-hog. It's odd. Ever since he began campaigning with Romney he's had to dial it back a great deal. Shows you that at the end of the day the Republican party is more interested in courting nonsense with the religious right than real issues with fiscal conservatives (whether you're sympathetic with those views or not).

I would love to see a highlight reel of Biden's best/worst past debate moments. Has anyone seen something like this circulating around online?

I guess I would want to see the same thing related to Ryan but I don't know what sorts of tape there is out there on him.
