Teacher snatches microphone from boy with autism about to participate in Thanksgiving play

lvgobble18f.jpg
A West Virginia boy with autism was reduced to tears during his school’s Thanksgiving play after a teacher ripped the microphone away before he could speak.

Filmed by both of his parents, the heartbreaking moment at Nutter Fort Primary School sees 6-year-old Caleb dressed as a turkey, complete with a playful headpiece, standing in line behind his classmates as they, one by one, deliver their lines into a microphone. As the young boy steps up, a teacher hurriedly takes the mic from its holder, leaving him in tears.

Caleb’s father, Kent Squires, posted the video to Facebook where he explains that while his son has level one high functioning autism, he “has the biggest heart and is always happy.”

His mother, Amanda Riddle, shared footage leading up to the incident, showing all of the students enjoying the Thanksgiving pageant.

Harrison County Superintendent Doctor Mark Manchin told 5 News the moment in question came after the play had ended and that Caleb was not supposed to be in that part.

“It’s a mistake that was made. There was no malice,” he told the news station. “This teacher, as all of our teachers, truly care about these young boys and girls. The program was over, and the teacher had taken the microphone.”

My brother is autistic.

He already has ebought shit to deal with, but I would absolutely lose it if a teacher pulled this with him.

What? Is the staff paid in ticks, that it's somehow over when all children but one got their chance to say something?

Watching the video, I can't even tell if she saw him. Her head was down and then she goes for the mic and turns around. Could have been an honest mistake.

Something else I picked up on is what was he going to say? I remember with these things we each got a little line that we rehearsed to death. The second to last kid says "Happy Thanksgiving." The next kid says "Thank you for coming," presumably that would be the last line. So maybe this kid got back in line or something, or didn't have a planned line and the teacher was supposed to dismiss everyone after the last line so she went for the mic like they rehearsed.

Even if it was a mistake, have some heart and give the mic back. But I don't think it was a erros. That teacher needs a different job.

It's a silly Thanksgiving play.

Let the kids have fun. Who gives a shit if it doesn't go according to the script?

What a lazy excuse they gave. It's clear that the teacher wanted to be a jerk and screw over the last kid. You can tell at the end of the play that the kids were stepping up to give their Thanksgiving wishes and the teacher decided to be a jerk toward the autistic child. Honestly if I was that school, that teacher would be removed immediately.

Even her body language and facial expressions tell what she was thinking.

The kid even says "OH NO!" and a caring teacher, if it was an honest mistake would have given the mic back and said "Ok sorry-here you go." You can see her just ignoring him.

Dude, watch the video he was protesting loudly against having the mic taking away. She ignores him purposely.

Should have just given him the mic back though

So the real story is that the kid wasn't given a part to say something in the pageant. The teacher took the microphone away because the kid wasn't given any verbal lines. So even though the taking of the microphone wasn't done in "malice", the fact that the child wasn't given the same chance to participate was messed up. It's an elementary school pageant, this stuff is nothing but a blooper real, it's not like he could have ruined it.

Looks like it started as just a mistake. She should have given him a chance to say something after it became apparent though.

Relatively minor situation made worse by her response, and publicized by being caught on video.

I don't know how much you can gleam from the video beyond that.

I don't think the teacher did it because she wanted to be mean to the kid. I think she probably isn't properly trained or concerned that she can't control what the kid had to say and didn't want to deal with it. Either way she is wrong. Give the kid a line and have him practice with his parents. Let him talk, as long as it doesn't go into crazy swear territory it would be fine. If he is really bad all the people watching already know about his condition anyways.

Oh I watched it. He says something at the same moment that people begin to clap because the program is over, and her back is turned. We're watching a video taken by the parents so our focus is obviously on him, to her she cant see him and there are a crowd of people clapping. It's conceivable to me that she doesn't pick up on what's going on and is moving things along.

If she saw him and purposely dodged him, that's really shitty. But I really can't see that with certainty in that video. Especially to the point where I'd be like "Fire her!"

She shouldn't lose her job if this is the only offense. I don't even think she needs to be suspended. A stern talking to/warning is all this warrants. Stop being so vindictive. People make mistakes, and it's not like she hit the kid.

Uh, yes. Someone who treats a kid like this shouldn't be a teacher.

Good lord, you're so unreasonable. With no further evidence you can make that judgement? What if that's all of those kids' favorite teacher, and she was having a bad day/frustrated with the kid.

As a teacher myself, there could be quite a few factors at play here, that neither the pupils nor the parents are aware of. Yeah, it doesn't look good but there could be a few backstories here.

This. Teachers union wouldn't let any firing go down anyway.

Maybe she needs to go get some training on how to be an effective teacher for this boy though.

You actually can't tell where she's looking but the kid was a few feet away so it's unlikely she didn't realize he was there. It looks like a pretty deliberate "yoink!" to me. I doubt there was some was some urgent need to grab the mic immediately after the program was over.

"Thank you for coming" sure sounds like the last line.

Given the explanation, it seems like she's deliberately yanking it because the autistic kid wasn't given a line and she didn't want him getting an open mic.

Gross. She thought it was over my ass. She knew the kid was there ready to speak after the 2nd kid, yet just takes the mic away. What is with these SHITTY teachers lately. For fucks sake.

Are you actually suggesting she be fired over this?
She can clearly see he's next in line and before he gets the chance to end the show, she aggressively takes the mic away. Whether it's because she's super strict on when events should end or not, that was very rude and inconsiderate especially when you take his autism into account and it was a big moment for him to actually speak which might be rare for an autistic kid even if it is just to say "gobble gobble" to end the show with a joke.

If she gets fired, I wouldn't be surprised.

I've had experience with autistic kids, and they're often ticking time bombs. It's possible she thought that kid was going to say something inappropriate and tried to preempt it.

sigh what a moron, I will never understand teacher slike this. All schools I havebeen in have always pushed for inclusion no matter your ability and or disability, it is soemthing we pride ourselves on and strive for. She shouldn;t be fired, however an apology to the parents and student would be nice. maybe do soemthing special for him so he stands out by having him have his own little performance or something.

You're going be lambasted for this post even though it's 100% true.

The teacher knows her students better than we do - sometimes you need to be strict. This is all assuming her grabbing the mic in that manner is even intentional which also isn't clear in the video. But yeah, sure. Fire her - ruin her life on the internet because she took a microphone from a six year old.

My son is autistic and turns six next month, and I could totally see parts of him in that kid's anguish. Fortunately, his teacher is actually very nice and communicates with us frequently, but this is the sort of thing we worry about constantly.

Eh. I'm going to not jump to any conclusions. It looks bad but there are so many facts we don't know. However, the fact that she just yoinks it with a grin looks really suspect.

If only the two leads or whatever were supposed to speak but he threw a tantrum before when he learned that he wasn't supposed to speak, then yeah, you need to follow through with that. If he was in trouble for something earlier in the day and he was told he couldn't do his gobble as punishment, she needs to follow through with that.

Looks shitty, especially with that grin, and could definitely have been handled better, but come on, fire her? Really? I can understand parents being upset, however.

Let the poor kid have a fucking chance. Who cares if it's not scripted.

It's a fucking SCHOOL PLAY. Who the fuck cares if he has some fun with it?

Some teachers are just unforgivable assholes. And to do that in front of the parents?

--I'd be up on stage that minute ripping the mic out of the teacher's hand and giving it right back to the kid. Let's see her CRY on stage in front of everyone.

Teacher is a jive turkey.

Possible she didn't notice him. Yeah he's on stage, but maybe he was onstage the entire time. I don't think it warrants a firing. If she noticed afterwards, might have been nice to let the kid say something into the mic though. Then again, we don't know if he already had a turn. Lots of what ifs.

So, hitting a kid is the only grounds for you to see a teacher get disciplined for? That comparison is not working exactly in favour of your argument.

Step in to the parents shoes for one second. Would you feel the same way then?
My son has developmental delays, and while I might be disappointed that they took the mic away, I certainly wouldn't want the teacher fired for just this.
