Virtua Fighter 4: EVO

best single player modes in a fighter ever, thats for sure. The AI is magnificent and really life like.

Only problem with this game is that after playing it for a while, it's not the kind of game i can take over to my friends, because the learning curve is so high they won't have a chance against me. Thats a good thing in a way, but it's also a shame since i've never really had a decent multiplayer match against somebody with it.

This is why it should have been online.

None of my friends play fighters anymore. I won't buy another Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, or any other fighter until it has online mode (unless it's a new Street Fighter, I'm such a whore).

I think Soul Calibur 1 is trophy of the genre, but I have to admit, EVO is likely the best fighter I've ever played. The single player mode is unmatched.

Exactly the reason fighters should have better single player modes and online modes. I have noone to play against, and when I DO fight someone, I'm so used to fighting AI that I can't keep up with a human.

Jeff, seriously pick this up. It's 20 bucks and the single player mode will make you forget about VS. Seriously. GIVE IT A SHOT.

I'll check it out. I'm pretty sure my Target had it on clearance for like $10.

Akira, Jeffrey, Goh. I didn't like the changes, (or didn't sink in enough time to notice) they did to Vanessa, so I dropped her. I got rather good with Goh, but I could never complete his training; there were two grapples that would fail every time, yet it would look just like the demo of it. :?

What exactly do the color orbs do? I've never got that. Are they just for bragging rights and collection?

From what I've read, getting a complete set of seven gives you a special item. I've never played enough of the quest mode to actually do it, though.

VF4 Evo ftw! It's the only 3D fighter I can say I truely love, it really rewards you when you spend time on it.

While I like Soul Calibur, I always found that when I tried to be clever you would just be slapped by some random button bashing all too easily. In VF4 Evo, I always feel in control and feel I can always come back in a fight even with only a slither of health left.

Thats my only problem, as you can easily beat down new players and it'll take them some time to understand the mechanics. My brother atleast tries to put up a good fight, but when our friends come round and we play Soul Calibur and if I mention playing Evo, you see pure horror on their faces and then they'll shout no at me :(

Can't have it all I guess.

I don't understand why a fighting game can't be online but the twichiest of twitchy games: fps's are played just fine. What the hell?

My 2 cents: I'd be willing to bet that Sega is/has been working on getting VF online, but won't do so until they are happy with how it performs.

[edit] Evo ownz! Wolf/Jeffry/Goh ftw!

Sega should make VF4: Evo into an arcade game. Keeping this on console is typical of their bad business decision making.

...

Best fighting game ever. At least best home fighting game ever considering Final Tuned.

I tried going back to Tekken but alas, the satisfaction isn't there.

I love Soul Calibur, but hate Tekken.

It's not the depth or anything. I just find the whole thing tedious. Guess I'm not fit for most current gen 3D fighters.

Over ther years here at GaF I've come to realize:

VF is the defacto fighting game of choice
Fifa sucks and will forever suck
ICO is GaF's (secret) god
And somethings will never change.

I've never played it. That was my point. I just don't think I would find it fun, but I'll buy it one day anyway. Never hurts to try.

I think it should read: "VF the deepest fighting game on the market"

That has nothing to do with liking the game, or finding it fun. Just that it's damn good game. I recognize Civ 4 as being a great game, but I can't stand playing it.

So recognize!

=P <==That means don't take this too seriously.

Well just my observation Sai.

Having played Tekken, VF and DoA over the years, I'd say that VF requires the greatest "discipline" of any fighting game. I'm talking, stance, position, timing, joystick movement, button pressing and finally execution. It's not a button masher by any means, but it is a deep fighter.

I think why GaF prefers this in general is because it IS an Elitist game.... and some of the Gaf'ers pride themselves on "mastering" the game. Not saying that's bad, but the reason why the reason why we have such heated debates over grahpics, gameplay and boobs is because it's a 50/50 split of people who prefer fast paced, button tapping (not mashing) combo's where as the VF crowd prefers finese, timing and attitude on how they play the games.

At the same time, as a relatively ppor figting game player, I still enjoy the heck out of it, even over "mashier" games.

It's pretty decently rewarding to a lightweight, too. This and Soul Calibur are the only two fighting series I've gotten much out of.

Since I don't have much people who play VF and that I usually beat them in a lot of fighters VF4 really got boring quick in straight matches, it was like Tekken 3 for me again when I would beat my friend senseless 50-9 except he gave up faster becuase they didn't get into it as much.

Best Buy had VF4:Evo for $10 for the longest time. You might be hard pressed to find a copy now, though. There's also a BB coupon for $5 off any PS2 title in some thread at CAG (which I used when I scored my $5 brand new copy).

It's my favorite 3D fighter.

But it's one of those games were you have to put in alot of time to get the most out of it.

I agree, but regarding the VF and DOA threads as of late ... many people let themselves get baited into those retarded arguements, and worse yet, fan the flames.

what I love about this game (which I bought this year with my PSTwo), is that you have to be good. If the computer kicks your ass it is because it is better that you, not because it is cheap <insert cheap characters/bosses here>.

I was also amazed by the level of depth that each character has, impossible to master them all.

brilliant game.

I would agree with you on that. I've stopped posting in those threads because it really depends on the person and the playing style they enjoy.

Baiting and flamming is one thing... but trolling and baiting is quite another. :D

Most WRONG poster ever.

If you're not a "blackbelt" and you don't have anyone good to play against, he's in fact correct. VF NEEDS opponents, more than say Tekken or Soul Calibur.

And I'd argue "flawed" online opponents > no opponents at all.

Where does that leave the best single player AI to date in a fighter that gets praised in every review and gives even those without friends great opponents to play against at any time?

Playing against fighting game AI is not satisfying. Even when I win, it's dissatisfying. Tekken and Soul Claibur are only bearable in that regard because of the reward quest things.

Why? Do you need someone there to stand up in front of and wave your crotch in their face and say WHO IS THE MASTER I AM THATS RIGHT HOW BOUT ANOTHER MATCH BEFORE YOU SUCK YOUR MASTERS *CENSORED* YEAH!!!!!!!

I guess you don't play VF4 much since it has a reward/quest mode that apes the modes of the other two games mentioned.

Er, because this is a fighting game, and are perfect multiplayer games? To fight against other people. It's what we have been doing for over a decade!!! What is this, lonely fighter for one?!

Nobody is argueing against that. Of course fighting games are best when played against other people, but that doesn't mean you have to have ZERO fun while playing against a CPU when nobody is around.

VF4 has an excellent 1p mode for those days when you don't have VF parties at the house.

Oh, I agree with that, MAF must have some funny multiplayer gaming sessions. You can give as much as you take duh!!! If you win then it can you be your crotch in their face for glorious victory!!

As I understand it, VF won't be online because the game's design is based around a continual solid 60fps. All the moves are timed out in frames and a loss of a single frame would destroy the game play.

A fighting game without human opponents gets old a hell of a lot faster than one with human opponents. No matter how good the AI is. I feel downright sad playing these things for more than two weeks if I don't have anyone else to play with. It's boring. You practice moves and learn characters for nothing. It's not like these things have a drawn-out story as in RPGs to keep you engrossed. It's just you, sitting there practicing combos against a souless computer, knowing that nothing will come of it 'cause you'll have no one to try them against. Ugh.

Can't wait for online.

I'm playing VF4 right now. Pai-chan's in the training mode, I'm relearning some moves that have slipped my mind. God I love her 3 stances, so unpredictable. Meishouho for the win! Meishouho + PPP = o_O What is she going to do?!
:lol She gives me the most trouble. Actually, I think all the Chinese fighters give me trouble. They're all in my face waving their limbs around. :(

The AI in quest was hard when I wasn't sure what I was doing but now it's kinda easy. I'm gunna record some replays some day cause I don't have anyone around me to let me know how much I really suck at this.

My biggest fear is Sarah + Flamingo stance. Ugh, ugh ugh.

Suprisingly, though, most of my losses in Quest mode come from Vanessa. Dunno what it is about her, she just thrashes me.

I get that feeling. I bought it a long time back tried it a few times and haven't come back to it yet. I didn't feel it had enough moves but didnt play it long enough to find out. It seemed like DOA3 had alot more moves per character.
