Virtua tennis WM+ review (thread of where'd the love go?)

I'm looking forward to this more than GST. The cartoon graphics turn me off. I'll probably try both, but if this delivers with the controls, this is the game I will get.

I've played it a little bit and have to say it just feels a bit 'off' to me. The gameplay is pretty good, but there's just no atmosphere in the game. The sound effects sound pretty unnatural and tacked on, the camera angle is a bit higher than Grand Slam which kind of annoyed me and overall the game is a bit harder to control because you can't do dropshots or lobs with the help of a button press. Also, the cel-shaded style and animations from Grand Slam look a lot better than the realistic art style, which has turned out some pretty ugly characters.

So it's not that there's anything particularly wrong with the game, it's just the overall package that doesn't seem as polished as Grand Slam.

Can we consider this thread as the official VT2009 wii thread ?

Here is the Eurogamer review :

On the whole, Virtua Tennis 2009 provides the clearest indication yet of the potential of the Wii MotionPlus add-on. While the game struggles to provide intuitive accuracy with default motion controls, the addition of Nintendo's little dongle transforms the accuracy of the strokeplay in a manner which will be warmly received by both old-school Virtua Tennis fans, and casual admirers of the sport at large. A few residual issues with the running mechanic aside, VT2009 can now justifiably claim to be the best tennis game available on Wii, and Sumo deserves much credit for utilising the WMP in the way we always assumed it would.

7/10

Seems like people who didn't like GST will like VT... Now, I'm curious to see what the people who love GST will say about this game !

Heh, Eurogamer are re-reviewing it. Turns out Wii Motion+ doesn't work well with the debug unit they reviewed it with hence the low score.

Really? Eurogamer goofed big time then.

Not the first time, either, but to their credit they're being transparent about it and working quickly to sort it. I couldn't quite believe their review after having played GST, but just chalked it up to another case of a major review outlet not putting enough time in, or not understanding Wii controls.

I decided to go with this instead of GST, especially because of the graphics.

Anyway, I was playing for half an hour until I realized that i was playing in regular mode instead of Motion Plus mode :lol :lol

I´m gonna play some more and then I will say my veridict.

The last virtua tennis I played was for the dreamcast, and my friends and I loved it. Aside from motion controls, is this game similar?

I was wondering about this, Virtua Tennis was the first WM+ game to actually get released, but after the initial reports of the game arriving early, it seemed the game suddenly dropped off the planet.

I'll let IGN explain it:
IGN said:
I wasn't happy with Virtua Tennis 2009 on Xbox 360 and PS3. The play mechanics for those versions are identical from what we've been seeing since the Dreamcast, as is the general game design. In my mind, that's unacceptable. Luckily the Wii version has the benefit of implementing motion control which intrinsically changes the Virtua Tennis formula. Add Wii MotionPlus to the equation and the game changes even further. Thankfully, the change is for the better.

So I played a bit more and I though the controls were nice...until I played GST.

Let VT09 die, GST is the true tennis game for the Wii.
You will only have that feeling of satisfaction of placing the ball where you want in GST.
