Vita PSN Game & Service Thread 2

FF9 is a classic. Persona 4 might very well be the most overrated game of all time so far.

And to counter this I will add the P4G is my game of 2012. It's oozes awesomeness from every pour.

I couldn't of set this up better, I get to defend P4G and recommend it all at the same time.

BUY IT! (Don't think you get out of it that easily EU peeps you can still pre order)

Whoa there bulls eye, I love FFIX as much if not more than the next guy (BEST SOUNDTRACK EVER) but P4 is incredible as well.

I keep putting time into it and it's not getting much better. I really don't see what's so special about it. I think someone the other day said it's more like a visual novel with some combat in it and I'm starting to come around to that. There's not a lot of interaction outside of the dungeon stuff, and the dungeon stuff isn't interesting at all with the tiny randomly generated hallways.

I wish I could say that it maybe hasn't aged very well and I had to be there at the start to get it, but it's technically a current generation game as far as release date goes.

Yeah, but Derrick's opinion is based on 5 hours of gameplay tops :P

It's over 10 hours now.

I know US PSN Updates are on GCT but is it usually a Tuesday evening when they update or a Wednesday?

It's always Tuesday. It just might not be til 10pm EST or something.

Nevermind, Carl's got the hookup, but curses on making me go look for myself. If I get banned, it's Carl's fault.

5 Hours should be more than enough to tell if you like a game or not.
Not for JRPGs and especially not for P4 which has a really long, linear and even boring start imho.
That said nothing wrong with liking FF9 more than P3/4/whatever, I would have suggested the first poster to play both actually :P

P4G is the best game on the vita and probably my favorite jrpg ever. People are allowed to think otherwise but they are wrong :p

On a serious note, it really is great. I haven't had a game affect me like this in a long time.

Anyone know if there is going to be a demo of EDF? I've always been slightly interested in the franchise, but I'm reluctant to drop $40 on a game I am not sure I'll like.

Couldn't tell you -- but if there's a demo on another platform you can try, I'm pretty sure it's going to be just about the same gameplay wise.

I think there's an EDF: Insect Armageddon demo on Steam?
There might be something on 360.

Hmm, actually, no dice.

FFIX over any of the Persona games ANY day.

There I said it!

He hasn't even gotten to Kanji, yet. At least do that dungeon and Kanji's story-line before writing the game off. :(

Kaz Hirai's latest comment about the Vita from CES:

“I would say it’s on the low end of what we expected,” said Mr. Hirai. He noted, however, that it takes 5-10 years before he can say a product has been successful. He said similar questions were asked about the PlayStation 3 early in its cycle, but he now sees that console as a success. “Long term is what is important,” he said.

This FACT. Any other game is lessor than.

I don't think I could realistically give a game five hours to decide whether I like it or not. Two hours tops.

Between Youtube and the internet I can decide BEFORE I buy something. It's really down to how much I like something after I buy it. For instance I knew what Gravity Rush was all about before buying it. I still like it, it just wasn't great. Persona 4 there really is no excuse, go to youtube put in persona 4 and see the hundreds of gameplay videos.

I just don't think I can drop $40 on EDF. $20 sure in a heartbeat, should be value priced and I know I will regret it for one reason or another if I drop the $40 on it now.

He was talking about third party releases targeted at 2013, so no Killzone or Tearaway.

Yeah, retail third-party was what I meant. I know Killzone and Tearaway will be awesome, and the downloadable games look like good distractions too. Was just making sure I hadn't missed anything.

With a lot of games I can see a few screens and I'm in (Bioshock, Gravity Rush), for others a trailer will be enough. I've watched a reasonable amount of Persona and I just can't decide whether I'll enjoy playing it as someone that doesn't play a huge amount of JRPGs.

If you're that confused you should probably buy it.

You are about where I am in playtime and I feel the same way. Glad there is at least one person out there who isn't digging it either, especially after everyone telling me it's god's gift to gaming. Honestly, I don't think I have the time to spend 20+ hours to find out if it clicks for me when I am currently not enjoying myself.

Glad I gave it a shot (and might change my mind someday) but I really don't think it's for me from what I have played so far.

Just don't play them or don't enjoy them? If you have watched youtube of gameplay and Social Linking/Story then you should be able to form an opinion from there. The only thing that might be left out from videos is the Persona building part which with fusions can be Pokemon-like.

Honestly if you don't like or hate jrpg's then I probably wouldn't recommend it to someone. I find you have to be careful when recommending RPG's to people because there are two camps, the jrpg and srpg'ers and the action rpg'ers. Action RPG'ers don't necessarily, and often, don't cross over to JRPG'ers.

SRPG doesn't necessarily mix with JRPG either. I used to love JRPG, I still like them, but just don't like spending the ridiculous amount of time on stories I don't have a lot of interest in (see FF13; loved the gameplay, hated the story, disliked a large majority of the cast [good: fang, tolerable: snow, lightning, intolerable: everyone else]). I think in all my days I've only managed to put solid hours into 2 SRPGs and I've only actually beaten 1. I just don't like the genre, simple as that. :P

Action RPG on the other hand? I love those too, usually.

Yea, you have crossover. Take a Fable/ME/Skyrim/Zelda person though and say "Here's P4G, you like RPG's right?" Doesn't usually fly. Can go the other way too, thats why I said its hard to just willy nilly suggest P4G to people. Big time RPG players will lap up whatever we can get because we've been on starvation diets. We can't really afford to be picky. When we get a truly excellent JRPG like P4G we can get hyped and people see that and say "what the hell is going on, even though I don't play and/or really like JRPG's they are hyping it up so there MUST be something that will appeal to me."

Fair enough... I was only pointing out that just because someone likes JRPGs doesn't mean they like SRPGs and not ARPGs.

However, I wouldn't consider the ME games (save the first one) or Zelda Action RPGs. :)
