Okay, I'm about 3 hours into it, I like it, I like it a lot. This game isn't jank at all, in fact it feels quite polished and more like an over budget AA game. What appears jank is by design, deliberate blemishes. With clear attempts to capture 80s - 90s action games/films in terms of dialogue and caricature characters. This is complimented by under performance voice acting, vintage background art/logos/posters, a soundtrack that takes you back to that era, a really cool 1984 Maserati Police car, and much more. This game has style. I've only beaten the first boss.
In terms of gameplay, it seems layered enough for my tastes. I did spend time in the training area to understand how to make the most of it. The game isn't easy at all, and if you're just trying to hack and slash your way through this, you will have an awful time. Parrying and handgun counters are incredibly important here, while using the limited button combos (learnt in training) you'll break down enemy guards/limbs easily. Bullet Time is super useful when you're surrounded, using it in a dire situation then immediately chaining 4-5 finishers in a row is super satisfying. Skill tree unlocks pretty quickly it seems, at least it feels as if I've unlocked the most useful components to enhance the fun.
The story isn't all that interesting, so far, but what is interesting is how it's being told. I encountered an animated cut scene and the way it was triggered implies there is a separate story to be unfolded here. Concurrent story lines maybe? Not sure, but I'm intrigued. I really like how it's all presented here.
