The critically acclaimed, Relic Entertainment-developed strategy game Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War is set to expand later this year.

Publisher THQ and developer Relic Entertainment have announced a new expansion pack for its popular 2004 strategy game, Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War. The expansion, titled Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War - Winter Assault, will add an all-new playable race to the original game's set of four, called the Imperial Guard. Both the original game and its expansion are based on hobby company Games Workshop's Warhammer 40,000 tabletop game universe, where space marines wearing power armor do battle with hordes of orks and eldar in a grim and violent far-flung future torn by war.

If old, SCREW YOU!

Not much info yet, any more gossip that you can leak bish?

I wouldn't really know, the only thing I know about the universe is what I played in W40k. Apparently there are a dozen or more races, but only 4 were included in the first game and only the Space Marines were playable. I really hope that gets rectified in the expansion.

I remember some Space Marines game that was on the PS or the Saturn or something and it had you going into old spacestations and there were creatures similar to creatures from Aliens that you had to exterminate.

Space Marines were the only race that got a single player campaign.

The Eldar and Orks are aliens and in Dawn of War. The Forsaken are demon possessed humans.

Space Hulk.

This is great news. Dawn of War is an awesome game, just pure carnage and very accessible for anyone new to RTS. This game made me start reading the 40K novels, which are gritty action fests.

Yeah, I read it this morning. I want to know why Relic went with the kinda boring Imperial Guard though...

Probably because a couple of those models were already in the single player

Bish, why didnt you tell us man.....? This is good news, but i'm saddened. I want my Homeworld fix. Your boys better be planinng to use that property again sometime soon. Or i'm gonna lay the smackdown on they're candy asses. Not seriously, but who do i gotta blow to get some more Homeworld bish?

DOW rocks by the way and uh i love Relic.

The Tau are also aliens, and appear in the Fire Warrior FPS. The Necrons are (or were) as well, and appear in no GW games that I know of.

Yeah, there was a race called Genestealers in the Warhammer universe. Don't know much about them, but they were an interesting idea.

Nuzzle the baby-soft nuts of somebody at Vivendi Universal - they own the IP, not us.

We've got some crazy stuff planned for the single player campaign, and you guys will have a goddamn field day with the Imperial Guard. Fo sho!

A whole new race? Awesome.

I've been playing Orks pretty much exclusively with my friends because they've each chosen a race to stick with and I don't want to step on any toes. Will be interesting to see what the Imperial guard is like.

I'd LOVE to have single player campaigns for the OTHER races too, just having one single player campaign felt kind of meh... eben though the game was absolutely awesome

Hey bish when exactly is this expansion going to be released and do you know of any other games than plan to be based off 40k.
More info will be revealed closer to E3.

Yes, multiple races in the single player campaign would be awesome. I agree wholeheartedly. 100%. :)

im quite a big 40k fan and i really liked Dawn of War, although i found the single player campaign a bit lacking in some areas...

the 40k universe has some fantastic colour and huge potential for epic, gothic, storylines. which i felt was missing from Dawn of War...
all the components were there, but i felt they werent used properly...
(have you guys at relic read the bill pope short stories of the horus heresy and the battle at the ultimate date?)

although as a game that tried to capture the essence of the tabletop battles, it certainly succeeded!

what i would like to see in the series (hopefully) would be:

some of the 'Advanced Space Crusade' campaign: the Tyranid invasion and the eventual huge battle on a planet with a space marine/imperial guard army and the Tyranid invasion horde.
going on at the same time, would be the co-op player controlling a space marine terminator/scout strike force on a HiveMind ship trying to stop the reinforcments from arriving on the planet.

i think co-op campaign play in the 'RTS' genre is a very under-used (if at all) element.
i understand the difficulties of trying to balance the play (im a designer myself and im focusing on campaign co-op), but with a well thought out mission structure and the emphasis being on Entertainment, the players WILL have a great time.

i could go on...

awesome im a 40k fan too. ive played a bunch of the tabletop games. SpaceHulk is a fantastic board game, but the video game version didnt live up to it unfortunately.

im glad i saw this thread, ive been meaning to try this game out, and i finally got a PC that can run it! :D

i saw it at the store the other day, but it was still full price, and im broke.

im guessing there is a demo available for this? ill have to check it out.

ive only seen screen shots for this game so far, but they looked fantastic. i just had to forget about it due to the lack of a decent PC. now i have a feeling im going to need to buy this game.

Bish is invovled with Relic? cool. ill have to dig up some old threads here.

This is mostly awesome.
