Not sure if the yellow on these Devastators didn't come out a little dark for my tastes.

Still happy with them so far though, and it might come together more with the red and black that make up most of the secondary colours on

Ok, so I hate to break it to you...but you made a big mistake with your assembly.

The Space Marine Style Guide clearly states every Devastator squad needs a Heavy Bolter, because Those Things Are Hella Cool Mate.

That was such a bloody gut punch, but I appreciated what a telling demonstration it gave of the power/danger of chaos, tying the start of the Siege of Terra to the beginning of the HH novels, and ended with her being brave and courageous in doing what needed to be done to stop it, as well as tying up the last loose end for Loken that isn't murdering his brothers like a badarse.

Oh crap, I didn't know Saturnine was an Abnett book. Also did you know that Abnett co-wrote Guardians of the Galaxy 2? I didn't know until a few months ago and I was like "wtf this makes sense because his fingerprints are all over the movies humor"

If Abnett doesn't work on Guardians 3 I'm gonna be pissed.

Okay, I'm definitely ordering Saturnine on my next paycheck.

No lies detected, but I'm saving up my Heavy Bolters for a Devastator Terminator squad I have planned.

my idea is swapping Storm Bolters for Heavy Bolters or Plasma Cannons, along with a couple of dudes packing Cyclone Missile Launchers and a Sergeant with a Heavy Bolter/Heavy Flamer combi weapon (thank you Deathwatch Kill Team sprue). Totally not codex compliant, but I think it'll look cool.

This is also my slight variation on the Emperor's Children Sun-Killer squad, adding in some Missile Launchers for flexibility.

I did not know he was involved, and tha is awesome!

Saturnine is great, easily in my tip 5 HH books. Incredibly well written and compelling characters, heartbreaking and uplifting in equal measure, fantastic character moments and paying off some plot hooks that were in the very first novel. It's really great.

Is the Lost and the Damned and Sons of Selenar worth reading? I've followed McNeil's arc with the shattered legion so I'm curious how that plays out.

TL&TD was great, up there with Solar War for me, although it does spend a lot of time with ordinary conscripted Imperial Army characters and the human/abhuman chaos forces, so if you're more of a fan of the bigger, more important characters that drive the plot forward, it might drag for you.

Conversly, it does have some of the best Primarch moments of the novels so far, especially for Jaghatai and Sanguinius, so I'd say it's definitely worth the read.

Sons of the Selenar I've not go to yet, as I'm waiting for a sale on Audible for it, since I don't want to use a credit on a relatively cheap book.

Got me some Sternguard and Terminators.

Finishing up my assault squad first, and then I am kitbashing the fuck out a veteran squad using extra tacs, devs, assault, the sternguard and a command squad.

If my Dark Angel upgrade kits get here before then I can make an entire squad of veterans with winged helms.

Imagine that shit.

I like Solar War but it felt like French was rushed because he just came off of Praetorian of Dorn and worked on Slaves to Darkness so close to it. I liked Praetorian of Dorn a bit more as it seemed a much more polished and fleshed out novel.

I think Solar War could have been much better if French didn't have so much on the plate and was given a bit of time.

I have a dumb question.

Got the 9th ed books (core + SM codex). How do I tell which chapter can field which units? I hear stuff changed, and I was wondering if Dark Angels can now field Ironclad Dreads.

As of right now, yes, any chapter can theoretically take any of the units you'd have access to if you made up you're own generic Ultramarine successor chapter, so Dark Angels can use Storm Talons and Space Wolves can use Centurions, but only Blood Angels and their succesors can take Baal Predators and such like

Once supplements come out, we'll know for sure whether that's a deliberate, permanent change or an oversight that will be corrected though.

Man I love the old Rogue Trader stuff.

It straddles that line between ingeniously awesome and amateur silliness, that's just endearingly underdogish compared to the slick but sterile global megacorp nature of modern GW's products.

I would not mind one of those old-school Land Raiders.
They're awesome, but insanely expensive these days.

Of course there is always the Forgeworld Land Raider Proteus if you feel like spending not quite such a shit load of cash.

gK6m2UN.jpg

They've also got Land Speeders based on the insanely unsafe looking Rogue Trader versions too, that one day I'll grab one of.

icbVNp7.jpg

While risking sounding like an old fart, I still remember playing 2nd Edition as a kid, and the few guys with those Land Raiders just being the coolest. Back then stuff like a Land Raider or squad of Grey Knights in a game was something rare and special.

I still have fond memories of one of the massive Sunday free for all games my LGS hosted back then, that ended up with an epic showdown between a squad of Grey Knights getting teleported in just after the Chaos/Tyranid/Ork side had managed to sommon a Bloodthirster.

After several rounds of close combat, only one GK came out alive, but the greater Daemon had been banished. It was the most epic thing 12 year old me had witnessed up until that point.

In case anyone's interested, as a spooky Halloween treat, GW are going to be selling this festive Space Vicar for a week from Halloween.

I'm mostly pleased it's another, actually new, proper Space Marine, not a Primaris Marine.

Details here.

So I picked up this little box the other day

RHpc8Yd.jpg

It's the easiest and cheapest way to pick up the Space Marine Heroes captain (middle).

aOr1XN5.jpg

Infact I picked up the box for a tenner less than just the captain goes for alone of ebay (bargain), despite the fact I had to import it from the US.

Now I have plans for the Captain, but I'm not quite ready to tackle him, so left with two spare, really nice looking dudes, I decided t make a 5 man Tactical squad.
uXUcXdx.jpg

I've got to say, these guys make me sad that Primaris have replaced Space Marines.

They're so much better sculpted, scaled, proportioned and detailed than the old multipart kits, yet still relatively simple to customise and use the old parts with.

I wish we'd got some updated marine kits up to this quality. They're a glimpse into an alternate timeline I really wish we'd ended up in.

Hell yes. It says "Angels of Death" on the blade.
That is without doubt, and taking into consideration how simple but effective it is, the single most straightforwardly awesome kitbashes I have ever seen.

There are scratch builds, made to a higher quality than retail releases, that are less inspired than that.

Bloody well done.

I see they've announced patrol box sets.

If there's a Dark Angels one coming at the end of the year I will buy 3...unless the units included are shite. I should probably pick up a Start Collecting Vanguard before they all disappear.

Rumour is the next releases to be announced are Primaris Ulrik The Slayer and Iron Priest, so I expect releases will be Space Wolf focused for the rest of the year.

I'd be optimistic as to what the Christmas Battleforce sets will be this year though. Given they did Space Wolves and Blood Angels last year, I'd say there's a decent chance of getting a Dark Angel set this time around.

I only recently started this, so I'm keen to see what Black Friday/Christmas does for the hobby.

Eyeing some Mark III tactical marines at the hobby store, another venerable dread and maybe some new stock depending. Also ordered a couple of gunships. I think I can make them Ravenwing? I think the Ravenwing are just vehicles in general.

Don't expect sales, GW seem allergic to them, but they do Battleforce boxsets each year, usually giving a ton of models for a decent discount, though still coming in at about 100 quid.

Bikes, Speeders and non transport aircraft are all Ravenwing, although until 9th you'd have your own special planes and couldn't use the generic ones, but that seems to have been retconned by how the new Codex is worded.

There's also a load of Ravenwing specialist units, and the Master of the Ravenwing has the option to ride a Jetbike, the jammy git.

Dark Angels Codex in Jan! Can't wait to see what comes with it.

On the model front: salvaging a second hand Land Raider, Thunderhawk and Thundertalon. My Indomitus box arrived today, and I've got a large order of DA specific kit coming in December.

Also had my first patrol match with a friend. We were fumbling through the rules, but he overcharged some plasma and blew up while my Devastators lascannoned holes in his lines. Was fun!

I have always been a mega fan of the Deathwing company of Dark Angels. If they make them playable I will consider building a force.

Currently considered incredibly broken Deathwing, you mean?

...they got a 4+ ignore damage due to Inner Circle. Their Terminators are really hard to kill at the moment.

Yeah but I am already building a SoB and Pan Oceanic army. I really need to chill out before I start anything new. That said, I managed to get into contact with some "special" people, who can get me pretty much any model ever made by GW (even Forgeworld stuff) so I might do some shopping anyway :p

I've taken to browsing the second hand market in my country and it's paying off. Found someone selling her son's old Ultramarines army since he moved to another country. Multiple Razorbacks, Predators, a Dread, a few Tactical squads, Assault Termies, Scouts, Assaults, Dark Angel Veterans, spare spruces included, some nid and IG bits, most of it unpainted.

All at the cost of 2xPredators and a Razorback.

The Hammerfall bunker. Useless? Kinda. Badass looking? You fucking bet. It'll be great terrain.

20201125-234625.jpg

Getting doors for the raider printed. It was a salvage job, bought it 2nd hand. The original Gray Knights paint job was...uh...brutal. Dude also used way too much glue, and put the chassis together incorrectly. Took a lot of work to get it looking ok (as long you don't inspect it too closely). I call it the Grandfather.

Got a Stormhawk that'll be done in a day or two, a secondhand Stormraven I finally managed to get stripped down after like, 2 weeks of chemicals. That's going to require a shitload of green paint. They discontinued Caliban Green spray. Those fuckers.

The Hammerfall feels like it was originally designed to deep strike like a Drop Pod, especially with the Heavy Flamers option that is basically useless with the way it works currently.

I'd suggest setting a house rule for that infact, but raise it's points cost by 30 to do so. It would also be a hell of a lot more fun to play against and use that way.

God I wish GW would allow somebody like White Wolf to publish a tabletop series for 40k. My friends and I love tabletop RPGs, but none of us are interested in miniature wargaming. I shudder to think of how many source books just the Imperium would need.

I got into 40k off the tabletop RPG. We played a Deathwatch kill team.

Thankfully managed to nab the Chaos Battleforce off Element Games for £96, in the 1 minute it was available.

I plan on just doing a thousand point force with them for small games, and for a nice break from painting yellow.

lDxI6cE.jpg

This is the scheme I have for the basic CSM's, except I'm going to use the really vivid Turbo Dork metalics and colour shift paints to make them look suitable Tzeentchy.

Fluff wise, I decided they're an Ultramarines successor that let it's Librarius get out of hand, then decided magic and following the god of fate was a better way to safeguard mankind, then listening to a bunch of mad old gits on Tera and a guy who isn't quite dead and mostly operates as a lighthouse.

Question: does +1 to hit and "add 1 to your hit roll" stack in 9th?

Had to look it up, and you can only ever have at most +/-1 to hit or wound.

However, if you had two +1's to hit and your target had a -1 to hit modifier, one of you +1 to hits would cancel out their -1 to hit, but then you'd still get the benefit of the other +1 to hit.

I have this box set and I love it. I think I paid roughly 175 USD for it — admittedly, very expensive — but if you do the math it’s a pretty awesome deal.

Still chipping away at it while learning how to paint. Been at it for roughly a year and a half now, but I’ve taken many breaks and haven’t painted consistently. For example I think it’s been two months since I picked up a brush, and that’s not even my longest break, so who knows. I know I need to practice on a consistent basis if I have any hope of ever getting good, but other hobbies/work/life always seem to get in the way. Also I am easily discouraged in my own work and am the type of person to where, if I make the slightest mistake, I’ll just want to say “screw it,” quit, and go do something else. Basically I am just quick to give up on myself.

Gee, maybe, just maybe, if I painted consistently and didn’t give up, I’ll eventually get to where I’m proud of my work.

In any case here’s one of my Blood Angels, I’ve got about 9 of them done. Need to get my edge highlighting up to par then run back through and do a bit of spot highlighting here and there.

Sexy! I'll post some pics of my recent stuff soon. Did some aircraft, some Razorbacks, some tacs (traditional DA colors, some from really old pewter models with robes). What I've been spending a lot of time on is building Indomitus Necrons so my friend can play with me and building a lot of terrain. I've ordered some playmats which I'm really excited about.

I also put in a huge order for Xmas: Azrael, Belial, Ravingwing upgrades, DA veterans, a Whirlwind and a Forgeworld DA transfer sheet.

I've done my first test model for my Chaos Marines.

Annoyingly though, I just cannot get it to look as good in pictures as it does in person. I'm using loads of the Turbo Dork Colour Shift and metalic paints, which give a sort of pearlescent and oil slick rainbow effect, which just won't come out, instead just looks a little clumpy/dusty in still images.

I'm very pleased with the result though, as in hand it really does look lovely, and kind of shimmers in the light.

Now I need to work out how to do snow basing, and that's the first of my Arctic Shades traitor warband done!

I have like, 3000 points of vanguard and no idea what to paint them as. More DA? but the vanguard have no robes or cool helms :( Primaris are so fucking lame.

I'm not too keen on many Primaris units, but the Phobos light armour variants definitely take the biscuit when it comes to just being lame.

If you're really not keen on them, stick them on ebay, when they have one of those 1 pound sellers fee offers, and get some cash for something you do want.

If nothing else, thematically Primaris just don't make sense with Dark Angels.

The hyper secretive, arrogant and duplicitous Legion accepting members into their ranks that have divided loyalties between Guilliman and Cawl before the Unforgiven should have been on pure sufferance and sent off to their deaths as soon as the Ultramarine's Primarch turned his back.

Really, GW should have brought the Lion back ages ago and used that as an excuse to refresh the old Space Marine models, with more gothic and baroque designs to appeal to those not interested in Primaris Marines.

Give them a bunch of old great crusade kit like Volkite Weapons, Conversion Beamers and Jetbikes, and you'd have two lines for marine players to buy, and something for both the old school Grim Dark fans and newer Tacticool lovers.

But then again I also think we need fewer new Marine units overall, and more Xenos releases, so who knows.
