I meant the front hole of the barrelI think I did. Used black on the main, and then some kind of metal on the main, and leadbelcher on the magazine and barrel.
I meant the front hole of the barrel
If you're going to drill barrels, make sure you do it before you assemble, use a smaller bit than you think you need, then go a size bigger if needed so you don't warp the plstic, and make a guide hole first with a pin or knife to make getting it straight easier.Oh! I will keep that in mind. I also haven't tried making a hole for the barrel yet.
I recommend reading up on them all first, then seeing if there's any particular faction that really speaks to you, or that sets your imagination off and makes you want to make a 'your guys' force.I know that I am late but I am really glad that they didn't redesign the Sisters of Battle when they gave us plastic models.
There's a very vocal group of people who bitch about anything feminine in armor design, like I am sorry if not everyone prefers mountains of steroids and male pec armor?
The plastic models gave me a renewed interest in the tabletop side of Warhammer again, I used to paint them when I was a kid but didn't really have the money to support it long term.
Been thinking about going with Drukhari tho but the Daughters of Khaine have gotten me interested in Age of Sigmar too. Only thing that kinda bothers me is that Morathi's model looks too conservative to me lol. I like it overall but it's weirdly conservative considering who she is it wouldn't stand out as much to me if she was a new character.
Could anyone recommend me some good tips on what to buy?
I am not entirely 110% sure yet but what I've looked at is either Daughters of Khaine or Drukhari.
Are Daughters of Khaine viable on their own in gameplay? I kinda want to try and find a group to actually play with too and not only paint.
For a beginner army what should I look for with either of them?
Sisters of Battle and Sisters of Silence are also interesting to me, even the Undead interest me too in Fantasy/ Age of Sigmar. I really like Neferata's model and her lore too.
Fantasy and Age of Sigmar have more Lords that I like for sure but I just recently got more into the lore of 40k.
It's hard to decide on what to buy tho when I have no clue how things play and work in practice tho lol.
I say Daughters of Khaine tho but I really mean Dark Elves on a whole, but I'd like to theme my army around the Daughtes of Khaine if that's possible. The Dark Elves on a whole tho are my favorite faction in Warhammer fantasy/ Age of Sigmar.
But yeah, anyone know of different good options for Dark Elves ( Daughters of Khaine themed ), Drukhari or the Undead ( Vampire Counts? )?
Different options on what is viable etc would make it easier for me to decide.
Thematically I like all of them but prefer the Daughters of Khaine, the new Khanite models they gave a preview of look really cool too.
Looking really, really nice.My tac squad sergeant (still need to finish the chapter insignia)
Devastator sergeant is done.
Heavy bolter dev
Big ass gun...er...dev (grav cannon?)
2 more devastators are almost done
I feel like I'm getting better, but I'm still sucking at things like eyes, dry brushing exact spots, weapon casings...
The yellow does actually have a decent amount of shade/depth to it in person, but it's a bit washed out in photos, in no small part due to the lighting. That yellow is incredibly flat, you need to put some tones there to make it look less like a Chinese toy. First thing I would try is heavily diluted brown wash to shade it a bit. The cape has a nice color but try to blend the tones together better, the edges between individual shades are too sharp. The metal (both silver and gold) looks fine as well as that blue cingulum and those laurels. Bright colors like white, yellow and orange are an absolute pain to work with. I am currently working on the Living saint and I made part of her dress white and it was driving me up the fucking wall, it kept looking so fake and artificial, only after I used a bit of brown wash and a ton of water and shaded it did it start to look ok.
Those look great of course, mostly because they were painted by professionals and even here you can clearly see the deep shadows and tone shifts. I am not saying you should make them look dirty or washed out but to make them look less flat, allow me to illustrate.Honestly, having experimented with modern painting styles, I'm growing more included to go back to the old Rogue Trader and 2nd edition more vibrant and colourful style.
These just look vastly better to me, and I'm not worried about my toys looking like toys.
They look pretty good, quite clean and proficient looking.I am dreading having to try my hand at painting cloth in the future.
But, gotta have dem warrior monk robes.
Edit: Devastator squad is done.
Primed my last tac tonight. I'll do most of him tomorrow, and he'll round out my first tactical squad. Also primed a scout marine to start learning how to paint cloth, and my very first vehicle: a Rhino! Super hyped about the Rhino. Going to spend the weekend on it. Already planned some stencils, going to use some excess bits to jazz it up and going to add a banner to it.
Those look awesome! I'd say you're a natural with these!First scout done: model didn't fit together as the instruction booklet showed, but I Googled it. It's apparently a known issue. I think the scouts with sniper rifles should fit better, but these are just normal scouts.
Rhino done (apart from some heraldry I can only add once I get a stencil made). I built it differently from the standard config, and did some custom stuff on the back to get one of the front hatches fitted in. Used a Dark Angels beaky helm I had lying around instead of the included ones. Added some bit from the various Dark Angels upgrade kits I had lying around. This was my very first vehicle paint ever, and I think it came out respectably. Learnt a lot.
Now to finish the other scouts, then I'm thinking of a second squad of devastators (another rocket launcher, 1 x heavy plasma, 2 x lascannon). I think I heard you can give a dev sergeant a chainsword and a stormbolter, so I'm gonna try that.
You forgot to paint the hole in the barrel again (on that heavy bolter scout) Otherwise, good job, man.First scout done: model didn't fit together as the instruction booklet showed, but I Googled it. They're from second edition, made back in 1994, so very much no longer in production.Next month I am totally looking into some special characters. That librarian looks fucking awesome.
How old is that librarian model? I looked through the web store in detail the other day, didn't see it. I constantly see people's photos with stuff I guess you can't buy anymore. Soooo much awesome looking stuff.
Genuinely looking most excellent there!Tactical marines are done.
Scouts are done, and boy were they a pain in the ass.
Tried painting holes in the barrels, didn't look right. Still working on that!

Are you planning to paint and collect or actually play? If you're playing, it's usually easier to find 40k opponents, just make sure whatever you pick you'll be able to play.
Personally I have Daughters of Khaine, they were a ton of fun to paint. I sold off the new Morathi because I couldn't get over how much they covered her up. Fortunately I have the old Morathi riding her Pegasus bare chested. GW lady models still leave a bit to be desired, so I've been buying stl files from artists so I can resin print more interesting equivalents.
There's also a nice Start Collecting box for Daughters of Khaine.
Search for 'Dark Angel Shield' or 'Vanguard Storm Shield' on eBay.Second devastators almost done (las cannons are pretty!). I'm assembling a command squad atm, but it's a mess. The parts have a lot of lines and are clearly from an older generation. Making a lot of substitutions from my excess bits. I see I can equip dudes with shields. How would I acquire said shields though.
I think the gold looks great! Maybe you could use a little bit of ink to shade the recess between each feather?Company Champion WIP:
Still working on the helm. Tried white wings but white sucks, the gold is ok but maybe I'll just go straight green. The photos make the gold look reaaaally orange for some reason.
That set is awesome. Great value for money, and awesome for spare parts. My birthday tomorrow. Friends bought me the Start Collecting Space Marines box. I got a Captain in Terminie armor dude is going to be badass.
My dudes? If so, they're my adult return to the chapter I made up as a kid, "The Hornets". I'm mostly just building and painting them to relax, so have been going a bit OTT with colour variation and kitbashing.I got the Space Marine starter set, some Assault Marines and a squad of Scout Snipers.
I never asked: what chapter are those? Yellow/Blue/Red?
Is he making a nice cup of tea? You've really nailed down a good consistent look for your army there. Definitely captures the grimdark aspect of 40k nicely, and that dreadnought in particular looks great.
Also, call me a crusty old fogey if you want, but I do love Womble Marines.
I think he's meant to be collecting geneseed or something, but I've always thought it looked like he was just opening up a refreshingly crisp, cool, can of beer after a hard days purging. Is he making a nice cup of tea?
The Seige of Terra have been mint so far.Okay I need to get back into Siege of Terra I guess. That cover is fucking amazing. I didn't know Graham McNeil put out a new book to. I need to check out Sons of Selenar. I want to check out The First Wall but it's written by Gav Thorpe. ughhhhhhhhhhh. Where tf is Chris Wraight, John French and Dan Abnett.
*thinks about what happens to Sanguinus*
The Seige of Terra have been mint so far.
Apart from The First Wall. Yeah, that was indeed a slog, that wasted about a third of it's time on a dull side story with boring characters that went nowhere, a third on slightly interesting characters that did nothing important, and then a halfway decent third act. It was the only novel so far that has felt like padding.
I'd actually say Saturnine has been my favourite so far. It was horrifically brutal to named characters, showed both the traitors and loyalists as competent, had twists and turns I did not see coming, and captured both the hope and hopelessness on both sides perfectly.
The revelation at the end of Saturnine was also a hell of a change from what we thought we knew about the HH too. The next book focuses on Magnus and Vulkan, but it's rhat final twist I'm most interested in reading more of.
That was such a bloody gut punch, but I appreciated what a telling demonstration it gave of the power/danger of chaos, tying the start of the Siege of Terra to the beginning of the HH novels, and ended with her being brave and courageous in doing what needed to be done to stop it, as well as tying up the last loose end for Loken that isn't murdering his brothers like a badarse.Typically I take a few years off from the HH so it can catch up. I'm looking forward to the new books though. I'm still pissed about the Solar War twist with Mersadie Oliton.
