Games like wario ware make me wish both the screens were touch screens =/
It would be nice... but might be a design problem. I recently had a hunch as to why the two screens at all, since touch is the main feature. Other than the story that Yamauchi said they should. My guess is it went something like this.
Nintendo Man #1: Okay, we've got a touch screen. So how are we going to shape this thing; like the GBA SP?
Nintendo Man #2: Waitwait, I don't think people using touch-screen on the flip-up part will work so well. Shouldn't the touch be on the base they're holding?
#1: OK... but now with controls and screen this thing is GBA wide. The flip design of the SP is pretty popular. Especially considering that we're begging for people to constantly stroke plastic tools across this screen, it's going to need all the extra protective help it can get.
#2: So what? Would you have us design a unit that flips up an equal-sized portion to be used only for speakers? Maybe I can add in a mirror and compartment for your makeup?
#1: Hold on, bare with me now. What about... a second screen?
#2: Buh?
#1: Sure. As long as it's not a touch screen it's not like it's going to cost us jack. We can stick extra shit up there. Doesn't really matter what. Plus, it wil help to differentiate this thing from the Game Boy line... which we really kinda need.
#2: OK, sounds like a plan. Now how about that motion control!
#1: You didn't get the memo, did you? We've decided to take that out. If we include both features in one machine, we'll be expected to make most of our games use both features, which will blow our load much quicker. By leaving it out of the DS, we can separately sell Wario Ware... with Touch. And Wario Ware... with Tilt!
#2: And separately sell Yoshi with touch and Yoshi with tilt?
#1: Now you've got it!
