was the light on the gba sp changed at any point?

i just exchanged a gba sp i bought around a year ago for a new one, using an extended warrantee. nothing much wrong with the old one, but i'm glad to be rid of those few familiar specks of dust under the screen, at least until new ones show up. anyway, the lighting seems subtly different - the screen seems brighter and more evenly lit, but with a more perceptible border of light around the screen. a few possibilities: could be my imagination, variance from unit to unit, or a slightly different lighting mechanism. anyone else noticed anything of this sort? and while i'm at it, how is the gba's side-light physically configured?

I traded my Japanese-launch model black SP in for a NES SP over the summer and never noticed any difference in the lighting myself.

The NES SP had three dead pixels though. :\
