We are getting an iteration of what Switch Pro would have been in 2021. The system setup and GPU features aren't the same.

I don't think it was the chip for the Switch Pro, but I do think they stretched the Switch's lifespan as much as they could and in the end they used that 4-year-old chip in the successor because it was the cheapest and fastest.

I think most of Nintendo's plans were shifted first by C19 impacting software production and chip availability and later due to unexpectedly high sales of the S1.

In an alternative universe we probably would have had a pro model in 2021 and S2 in 2024.

We also got rumors later on about the Switch 2's chip but it would have been far too late for the Pro, we just didn't know it was for the next gen console yet.

Switch Pro was never a thing. Since that is the case, I think it is possible that the Switch Pro rumors were just bits about the Switch 2 and Switch OLED that leaked out and were wrongfully touted as a Pro.
