Wasteland 2 Beta is Available

Watching a bit of the game on Twitch and I'm loving what I'm seeing. Visuals are surprisingly great.

Only downside is that I'm not sure I'll actually be able to play this on my mediocre laptop =[

Post impressions.

First impression. It DLs too slow!

Did Steam change their DL colour?

Seems pretty solid so far. I stalled out during character creation for a while then decided I wasn't going to theorize my way into a decent party composition without some real experience with the game, so I basically just threw some half-considered skill points at a quartet and set off on my merry way. The little event log thingy is neat, though I wonder if its little dot-matrix printer sound effects are going to grate on me after a while. That sound seems to be tied into the master sound effects volume slider, so it doesn't seem like it can be turned off separately.

Also getting lots of flickering on the shadows, and it doesn't seem to have any graphical settings for them specifically. A handful of quality presets, along with resolution, anti-aliasing, and v-sync settings and a pair of sliders for brightness and saturation are the graphics options.

It totally passed my first two technical checks for every PC game, though: it can be minimized and restored without crashing and it properly locks my mouse to the game screen when it's in full screen mode. Good on ya for that, inXile.

Now maybe I should actually play the game instead of trying to muck about with settings and menus.

My 1 Intelligence dude in football pads who smacks people with a pipe is my most effective combat unit by a mile.

Buncha highly-trained sharpshooters and they're handily outclassed by a savant wielding plumbing. Truly the Desert Rangers consist of the best and brightest of the post-apocalypse.

To be fair, it actually is easier to hit someone with a pipe in real life than it is to hit them with a bullet.

Anyone else getting environmental assets that are failing to load during random battles? You'll notice this by seeing things not being textured that are obviously supposed to be textured, lol. Also
where did everyone head first? The Ag Center or the town?
I went with the former partially because that demo they did of the area was pretty awesome, and
because while saving civilization is a good thing to do...no food = no civilization anyway in a couple of weeks time.
Can't wait to see the
fallout of going to save the Ag Center first.

Other than some minor graphical errors performance has been pretty good. I'm running it on Fantastic @ 1080p and the game stays smooth as long as I keep the camera a few notches from as far as it'll go.

I took the default character carrying a pipe in the first game and they were out damaging all weapon users.

I may have to use a character guide when this game is finished because there seems to be a lot going on with the attribute screen.

Only pledged 30$ so no beta for me, which makes me a sad panda for some reason. Have fun with it people and post about it here!

Why? They made it clear during the KS which tiers did and did not include the beta and gave you over a year to bump your pledge up if you missed it during the initial KS run.

It was clear as day, doesn't mean it isn't slightly annoying having people who payed $5 more getting into beta.

I will forget about it once my boxed copy arrives. :p

Runs really well on my beastly system, I'm playing it downsampled from 1620p on my 1080p monitor and it looks great.

Some of the controls are a little obtuse, and the icons are really small at high res. Space toggles between individual and group mode, and there is an icon for that, as well as walk/run. The party leader picks up everything, and if you have them pick up ammo, you have to have a look for who uses what.

It's very old school, in that you have to equip ammo in order to use it, and you have to reload manually (better to do it outside of combat, otherwise you use action points).

It's difficult to understand what status effects you have, and how to treat them.

I feel "Goodbye" should be placed somewhere else in conversations, far away from dialog options. I hit it once accidentally. It's also a little weird when you have an NPC giving a long speech and are presented with a "click anywhere" command, but you're hovering over the next speech action. A little confusing.

When leveling up, the descriptions of the perks is a little lacking, but that's Fallout style, so it's okay.

Not hex, but square based combat!

Nice nod to the original Wasteland by
including Angela Deth, and her explanation of what happened to the other characters.
Although, I've played all of 20 minutes of Wasteland on Steam ;)

WL2 is actually turning out pretty damn well. I'm quite impressed. I backed this on a lark, but it really does feel like Fallout 1&2 to me.

I'm still quite early, so I haven't reached any major towns or had major conversations yet, which was the best part of Fallout, worried WL2 might be more about combat though. I'm only in the first couple of hours though.

As it's been pointed out multiple times: that's kind of a false equivalency considering you went for a physical tier and the $55 tier is entirely digital. To get the beta and get a physical copy you had to shell out $75.

So no, you really didn't miss it by $5. You missed it by $25.

It's such a big mistake that they decided to go with a free cam. It's aggravating for the player and a lot more work for the artists and map designers. No one enjoys messing around with the camera. Should've went with a fixed isometric cam.

I know it's a beta but it's very underwhelming from what I watched. Some more observations:

- The UI sound effects are extremely aggravating holy crap, so many beeps and boops.
- The UI in general is very amateurish. Hopefully the overhaul will make it much much better.
- All the maps look empty.

I've been watching some streams and I love the aesthetics of it. Only concern about how much combat there is, but the encounters I saw looked awesome.

Also I love the writing and voice acting. Maybe I'm wrong but having good, interesting dialogue makes the acting seem so much better.

Haven't gotten very far, but it's pretty interesting so far. Mark Morgan's score is great.

Please be good!

I've had a hole in my heart since they made Fallout 3, so I've been watching this since announced with cautious optimism. I am ready to preorder at a seconds notice!

Torment will have a fixed cam, so maybe InXile realized that themselves.

Does the game feature different dialogue options for dumb characters?

Any more impressions from GAF?

The portrait artwork is gorgeous. I just wish the in-game models came close to that level of quality (or actually matched their portraits. I had a female raider portrait get matched with a dude.)

I wasn't even aware they would do this. I pledged 50, but I think it was 65 because I live in Europe.
I'm not eager to beta test this though, it's defnitely not the type of game I'd want to spoiler myself with a broken version of it. Alpha/beta-testing in general feels like a waste of time for me nowadays. When I was younger I'd grab any oppertunity to test a game I was looking forward to.

Awww :(

I'll pester them about it on their forums later.

We're not going to do different dialog for int 1-2 characters. That's more of a Fallout thing, it doesn't really make sense to us, with the keyboard-based system and with party members being able to step in and out of dialog.

But what If I have a party of dumb characters? :-P

I wonder if they'll charge $55 or whatever the beta cutoff is.

Honestly, it kind of annoys me when alpha/beta is restricted to higher tier backers. I suppose it might drive pledges during the crowdfunding campaign but it's absolutely a detriment to Steam's Early Access program and continued funding during development.

If there's going to be a public beta for your game, offer it to all backers. I think we're beyond the point where developers would lose sales because of an unfinished/buggy build. Developers are only hurting themselves with the restrictions.

I agree, plus it avoids a potential shitstorm(major or minor) amongst backers.

I really don't want to be spoiled so I don't plan on playing the beta much.

I have a question about the general tone of the story though. Is it something similar to older CRPGs? Find the water chip, explore the troubles in the south, etc?

Replaying Baldur's Gate at the moment and really love how the "main objective" isn't something that just looming over my head. It's a vague goal which won't have a clear answer for a long time. It makes exploration feel a lot more natural then in a lot of newer RPGs.

I was watching a bit of the stream last night, and the first mission just told the player to move to the east until they find the radio tower.

I don't know if that answers your question, but that reminds me of older RPGs.

I signed up. Dunno if I'll play it tho. I don't like betas cuz I like to go in fresh especially for a RPG.

Being a team of new recruits nothing is presented as a grand quest railroad to be followed right away. I can see the seeds of what probably becomes the main focus in the middle or end game but the clear answer isn't there right away.

I think you will like how it develops. It is not a setup like fallout 3(chase daddy), new vegas(revenge on benny), Dragon Age(DARKSPAWN!), Mass Effect(iminment space war), or Alpha Protocol(bin laden hunt).

Tempting but I think I'm going to go with the "wait till release camp". Looking forward to hearing some, spoiler free of course, impressions though.

Thanks! Those examples were you listed were exactly what I didn't want. :)

Getting realy tough not to play this thing... must resist. When this this suppose to be officially released?
