Watch Dogs 2 PC performance thread

AA methods in this game aren't that great. TXAA gives the game significant blur and take a huge performance hit, smaa and fx AA aren't that great at reducing aliasing but have less blur.

I'm more than slightly disappointed that this game features TXAA, but no purely post-processing TAA solution.

Even Watch_Dogs had an adequate temporal SMAA solution. How hard would have been to include TAA and a built-in sharpening filter?

The game looks great, but why should you ever leave the Arkham X-ray mode from a gameplay perspective?

This is my problem with these modes, it's especially bad in WD2.

When infiltrating a base/building/compound it's almost impossible to not run with it on the entire time.

Some of the cool story missions had amazing visuals but I missed 90% of it because I was stuck in that damn thing.

On second thoughts it is really hard to see the difference(except for the ambient occlusion) between Temporal Filtering and native 1440p, it was because MSAA was activated before.

Multisampling is useless though it trashes the frame rate.

Forgot about MSAA, tried it and yeah frame rate takes a hit.

TAA would've been great. I'm sticking with SMAA. It's the only way I'm hitting 60fps on my 980ti, but the image quality could be better.

Singapore works for me with flyvpn

Temporal aliasing at 1440p is mad blurry for me in motion?

Might have to play with settings more.

But with it on I can hit 60fps+ on a 3570k and 980ti.

I had the same issue as well. The game is beautiful but I missed half of the interior graphics because I wanted to not die.

I'm hoping the Samsuing keys are just locked to NA release time and not like "oops, we forgot to activate them in general" and forgotten about until tomorrow.

Was the promo US only? I bought it second hand so not sure.

If that happens I'm gonna be pretty disappointed. There's no way they can forget about us right?

Here are some comparison shots from my 980ti and i7 6700k:

Textures are on Ultra in every shot.

1440p - Ultra Preset - No Temporal - TXAA8

The Detective Mode Is useful but makes it pretty hard to actually read the environment. Like to parse the geometry. Also enemies you've spotted get red silhouettes through walls so you don't need Detective Mode to see them. I tend to hop in and out.

On another note : holy fuck. This game is incredible. Like truly special. Just shot to near top of my goty list.

Just infiltrated a large base with MGS3/V-tier level design, had like four clutch near-alerts before CQCing guards, used multiple distractions, used free running to get up on top of a building to hack stuff, was dropping my RC car into vents to hack terminals then Splinter Cell style sneaking into server rooms - did the whole thing without being spotted. It was like Metal Gear Splinter Uplink.

What the fuck.

Then after that i got ambiently loaded into another players instance, where they were in a police chase and i could get the bounty. Chased them all over a mountain, we lost the police in the process, then i used Remote Car Hack to slam HIS car's brakes against his will, hopped off my bike and shot him straight through the windshield into his confused face.

What a game.

Enjoy everyone and hopefully PC performance is good! I legit can't wait to finish on PS4 then get on the PC version.

What does temperal filtering do exactly. Is it still rendering the game at native resolution?

It's basically checkerboard rendering.

There's more information about it here alongside a comparison: Graphics and Performance Guide.

Temporal Filtering

If you're interested in graphics technology, you've probably heard a lot of talk about "checkerboard rendering" in relation to the PlayStation 4 Pro in recent weeks. This new, upgraded PlayStation 4 is promoted as being capable of 4K graphics, and given a lower-fidelity game it most certainly is. In high-fidelity games, however, it has to use a clever workaround called "checkerboard rendering" to achieve a higher-resolution image without tanking the framerate.

In simplified terms, checkerboard rendering upscales the resolution from 1920x1080 to 3840x2160, and uses data from the previous frame to create new detailed pixels that fill in the blanks between the pixels that were upscaled, avoiding the blurriness that would otherwise occur. The result is then further improved with other techniques, and smoothed out with anti-aliasing.

This same principle was already achieved in a similar fashion in last year's Rainbow Six Siege, which introduced us to what Ubisoft calls "Temporal Filtering". This first-take on the idea rendered the same number of depth samples as a full-resolution 1920x1080 picture, but only a quarter of the shaded samples, improving performance at the expense of image quality. This manifested as a reduction in the quality and visibility of Ambient Occlusion shadowing, increased shader aliasing, decreased lighting and shading fidelity, and a loss of fidelity on smaller game elements, such as leaves, grass, visual effects and minute pieces of geometry.

In the year since Ubisoft has greatly improved their implementation of the technique, avoiding almost all of the previously-observed pitfalls. Such is the level of improvement, in fact, and the performance of the game with Temporal Filtering enabled, you can increase the resolution from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440 whilst simultaneously benefiting from a faster framerate and improved image quality.

Damn those card recommendation are much higher than the ones Ubisoft put out. Jeez, I mean I have a 1080 but still. I told a friend his 770 should be ok to play since it said 780, but now I'll tell him to wait. Who knows how the older cards will actually perform.

Or I guess since it's NVIDIA of course they promote their new series of cards.

Anyone with a 780 or 780ti try it? I'm wondering if I should go PC with my 780ti or PS4 Pro version,

The temporal filtering part of the Nvidia guide is pretty noteworthy. I wonder if more games will use this from now on as a performance option.

So ... the elephant in the room here is that Nvidia is calling Checkerboard Rendering an upscaling technique.

Our resident "Oracle" assured us it wasn't. Who to believe?

I noticed this too :) Straight from the graphics man's mouth! "In simplified terms, checkerboard rendering upscales the resolution"

Is 4k 30 possible on a single GTX 1070?

Maybe with temporal filtering and some lower settings, an overclock would help too.

Yeah it would be awesome to see it in more games!

A 780 Ti is about as fast as GTX 970 so that would be better than the PS4 Pro version, it would be good to see some benchmarks of that GPU in this game though, hopefully we see them soon.

I am getting nowhere near 68 average FPS on Ultra with my 1080.

Either the need Nvidia drivers are a huge performance boost or my i5-4690k is holding me back. Can't use MSI to measure anything as it won't display so stuck with FRAPS and the limited info that gives me.

So for me the game says the Ultra Texture Pack is not installed under Premium Content in Menu, but when i open Uplay it says its installed, wtf?
