WB Games Being Broken Up Due to AT&T And Discovery Merger

What a mess.

The gaming division will be stuck between a rock and hard place because in reality neither AT&T or Discovery will be a suitable home for them.

Hoeg Law did a great video on what is happening with the company.

100 Billion in debt, it's a lot of pressure. The Crunchyroll deal was held up and that added pressure too.

It will be interesting to see where the studios end up. Either way AT&T will own most of it still.

Probably keep the mobile side and dump the rest.

I remember all talks last year about WB Games being bought up by either Sony or MS. Lets hope this will enable their studios to get their games out. Shame on Rocksteady, I wanna see the followup to their Arkham Trilogy

what I was hoping for was the movie arm of WB would be demolished and replaced with competent leadership

Things will most likely get better now for WB movies under Discovery since they will know how to manage the IP correctly (due to actually being a media company and not a telecoms company winging it).

It's so odd how all of this has turned out. I was quite excited about the news when it first broke then I read the terms of the deal and sold out. Cutting the dividend 50% in exchange for shares in a company I have no interest in owning at this stage is a big no-no.

What else is new? Warner owned Atari during the 1983 crash, they were a player in getting closer to imploding the industry than anyone else.

Fucking insane. I hope everyone will be okay and that no studio gets dissolved or something.

Rocksteady deserves better treatment than this.

Jesus, poor WB games.

Both companies sound like literally the worst place any of their studios could end up.

Not entirely sure how they'd split these up, given how tightly linked most of their studios are/were interlinked with WB media properties.

On the upside most of their name studios have been consistently profitable, so they should continue as before. The only thing I suppose to obviously differentiate between the two is location, there's a NA operation and an UK/EU side, so perhaps it'll be split that way for administrative purposes.

I wonder what will happen to the Harry Potter game?

Seems like anytime a major movie studio tries to be a game publisher it always flames out, Fox tried it, Universal tried it, Disney tried it, I think pretty much any movie studio you can think of at one point tried it at least briefly.

I'm never going to play Gotham Knights, am I? Just tell me now, Warner. Just tell me now, don't make me suffer for another ten years. Please.

Not sure why everyone is freaking out over this one. Checked the thread at resetera and they all seem to think it's the death of WB games. As if they were treated so well under AT&T making online garbage like Gotham Knights and Suicide Squad.

Either A. They're unfazed. B. They get shaken up and revitalized which, taking a look at their upcoming projects, could only be a good thing. or C. The doomsday scenario where they just sell them off and license the IP's out like marvel/disney and we're getting Spider-Man PS4 caliber batman games again from another studio in a few years.

Wish Sony could buy them !

They easily could... 'would they?' is another question completely, especially under Jim Ryan who is all about cloud gaming and mobile it seems to me.

NetherRealm would really fit with EVO. A lot of the rest is dead weight, they could just pilfer the talent in the fallout cause the licenses are not going with the studios apart from MK.

Personally I'm excited. The discovery CEO was just talking about the value of the IP's and how great this merger is and the first two names out of his mouth were Batman and Superman. They're on his mind. And they want to be a media and entertainment powerhouse, not just streaming. Gaming is a billion dollar industry so I think investment there would be in line with the new company goal.

I'm seeing things like "Discovery doesn't know to run gaming!" "They don't care about gaming!" Which on the latter I'd like to know which Era poster had lunch with the Discovery CEO to possibly know that. Or how they gained their power of telepathy. And the former it's not like discovery is gonna be designing combat and stealth systems. They pay to have WBIE function and WBIE carries on. WBIE has their own leadership positions who run gaming.

Netherealm or at the very least the Mortal Kombat IP would be a great get for sony especially them going all in with EVO. But they seem like a very short sighted company when it comes to acquiring studios and/or IPS. MS will probably come swoop and sony will money hat capcom for timed street fighter. Sony is in denial about consolidation in the gaming industry and unless they start making moves soon may find themselves on the outside looking in of the industry they once dominated.

You are 100% accurate. Square Enix just hit 6.1 Billion, way down from nearly 8 billion a couple months ago.

Then this opportunity to get NetherRealm and the MK IP for films and merchandising. Plus other things like Crash and Spyro going unused at Activision and Konami IP's..... There are so many opportunities it is crazy, they have more cash than ever and little debt.

Seems so wasteful and we all seem to be screaming into the void here. They seem to be off in their own imagination land where cloud gaming is everything and they can charge what they feel like and don't have to market games or communicate with fans.... really frustrating stuff.

I agree with all that you said. I wouldnt even say theyre obsessed with cloud gaming but more overly confidant in their position. They seem to be betting and building the farm around naughty dog, more specifically, the last of us. After the divided reception from part 2 id probably expand my horizons. I will say that I think MS's philosophy of acquiring already established IP is smart but i dont think they are the right brand or have a compelling business model to make those IP exciting or desirable.

Microsoft acquiring WBgames rumors incoming.
Rocksteady would be a huge boon for whomever were to get them. Though, I'm not sure where I lay on the matter as I'd love to see them stay multi-plat, but I'd hate to see them scooped up by studio-killers like E.A. or Activision. If they went to MSFT at least we'd get them still on PC. Though, I'm not sure anyone would want them if the DC-games licenses doesn't come with them.

NetherRealm and the Mortal Kombat IP is the prize. NetherRealm is a fantastic developer. And you can clearly do a lot with the Mortal Kombat IP( Movies , comics , games , tv shows , action figures , etc ) I wonder , with group will control them ?

We dont even know if any of these big dev studios are up for sale. Its all speculation. It may not mean anything but sony is the only one that actually is making moves with WB. Attempting to buy crunchy roll for a billion dollars. Has the marketing deal with Harry potter. Not saying it means anything but im sure sony is aware what IPs would be up for grabs.

Haven't got a link to this video on hand do you? First time iv heard of this situation and iv done a search but turning up empty handed for a video discussing the topic.

I'll say Monolith should be the dev all publishers should go for...They have talented people there, created the Nemesis system from Shadow of Mordor/War games and F.E.A.R AI with G.O.A.P.

I checked this and youre right. Sony is absolutely insane if they arent actively pursuing SE this second. They have 18 billion budget to spend for the next 3 years and have a decent cash flow, mainly from playstation. If they wanted their own 7.5 billion clapback here it is.
