NEW YORK -- After months of media speculation and legal wrangling , the Walt Disney Co. and Miramax Films co-heads Bob and Harvey Weinstein announced Tuesday that the parties have come to terms on an agreement that will see the brothers exit the company they co-founded 25 years ago.

Under the arrangement, Disney will retain the Miramax name and the Miramax and Dimension film libraries. The Weinsteins, meantime, will take the Dimension label to a new company they are forming.

The relationship between the parties will continue in some capacity, however, with Disney and the Weinsteins potentially collaborating on as many as 25 projects that will be distribbed by the Weinsteins' new unit.

Pics the companies will team on include a new chapter in the "Scary Movie""Scary Movie" franchise and the Pierce Brosnan-starrer "The Matador." The Weinsteins said they will distrib themselves projects from Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino, as well as a raft of other films.

Interesting that Miramax has been described as the "House that Tarantino built", and now his next movies will be distributed by the Weinstein's new company and not Miramax.

well, Robert Rodriguez already mentioned that he was going wherever the Weinsteins went.. so that was a no brainer.. and i guess it was easy for Quentin to follow.

Forgive my ignorance of Hollywood politics but does the Weinsteins' displeasure with Disney stem from Disney's blocking of Fahrenheit 9/11?

Whole books will be written on their displeasure with Disney.

Fahrenheit was one straw, but the studio butted heads with Disney over many films. The main difference though is idealogical. Disney is new-fangled corporate Hollywood and Miramax is for all intents and purposes, old-fashioned megalomaniacal asshole-driven Hollywood.
