That's got to be horrible for the mother. Even if the other baby's not fully formed or responsive, having to look into its eyes knowing that it would die... i could almost cry just thinking about it.

Oh, when I read your first sentence I thought you meant giving birth. That would suck even more.

the other head wasn't really alive...it was muscle reflex is the way I understood when I read it.

What's freaky is that it aged with the little girl

I don't know. They just said it was incapable of "independent life" I think. I would take that to mean the brain was functioning, at least rudimentarily, because it was getting it's blood, oxygen, and other life sustaining functions through the body of the fully-formed twin, and if removed would no longer have a body with organs to support those functions. Whether that means if given time the bodiless head would have been able to hold a conversation I have no idea - but if the brain was fully formed (which I doubt in this case) I wonder if that could occur, rather interesting to fathom actually.

There is a guy in china that I saw on Ripley's I believe, who had a second face on his head. And it moved too. I think it was the same condition

Heh! I remember that too, I watched that years ago when I was little kid. That horrible image will stay etched in my brain forever. :S

As in the case of a girl who died after similar surgery in the Dominican Republic a year ago, the second twin had developed no body. The head that was removed from Manar had been capable of smiling and blinking but not independent life, doctors said.

Freaky.

There was a story once about this man who had the smiliar condition.. the face was essentially hidden by all the hair around it.. and it only had one eye as well as it's mouth being deformed.

Anyway it kept taunting him all the time and cussing, causing the guy to never fall asleep properly.. whenever the man would cry the deformed face would "chuckle" if you could call it that.

Eventually the poor guy killed himself over it.

This was real. It was video footage and interviews with a man who lived in the jungle areas of china. He wore a mask on his head and lived with his parents. He could move the lips and there were teeth and one eye that could blinking. There is probably a case from the past similar to this one that inspired the story.

I believe I read about this guy, or a very similar case, in the Book of Lists' list of people with extra body parts. Always freaked me out and was hard to believe, but a picture is worth a million words in this case.

Actually, I'll just go find that part of the book...

The Book of Lists said:
EXTRA! EXTRA! READ ALL ABOUT IT: 10 PEOPLE WITH EXTRA LIMBS OR DIGITS (AND 2 VERY SPECIAL CASES)

...

2 VERY SPECIAL CASES

1. EDWARD MORDAKE
An heir to a peerage, handsome, gifted as a scholar and musician, Mordake was also gifted with something else which made him very unhappy. On the back of his head he had another face. It was said to be a girl's. Although it couldn't eat or speak, the face's eyes moved; it could also laugh and cry Edward begged to have his "devil twin" removed, even if the surgery killed him, but no doctor would attempt it. He committed suicide at the age of 23.

2. PASQUAL PIÑON
A Mexican with an extra head growing out of his forehead was reported in 1917. The extra head could move its eyes and see, but the mouth, which also moved, could not speak. This must have been a relif to Pasqual. Eventually, say the reports, the extra head lost even these abilities and became simply a lifeless growth.
