Weirdest gaming-related pronunciation you've heard?

I pronounce it [ˈsu:pə] [mɑ:ri:əʊ] [ˈbrʌs]... Most people pronounce it [ˈsu:pə] [mɑ:ri:əʊ] [ˈbɹoʊs].

I always get a question or two about this.

"Ys"

Uhm for kid stuff...

Hated people who said mare-e-oh and it will always be rye-you to me.

Also people said barlog in the early days. If someone looks up the championship edition arcade machine, it was even spelled wrong on it.

Maybe I have a different accent than either of you... But no, Mario should not be pronounced like the A in 'man' or 'apple.'

Actually... It should rhyme with Car.

But I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and say that it could be like the "how do you say Mary, merry and marry?" distinction. It's hard to discuss pronunciation in text.

If you know both the Italian name, and how the Japanese syllable is written, there is very little room for interpretation.

I'm Welsh and have a Welsh-English accent, BUT, all over the UK we say Mario with the "Ma" sound as in "apple" or "man."

And take it as legit as you want, but when I use Google translate to hear the various language accents pronouncing the name "Mario" it is always in this same way, whether it's Italian, English, Spanish, French or whatever.

I only ever hear North Americans pronouncing it in this "Marr-ee-oh" way.

Guile from Street Fighter as "Gilly" and "Gweel".

Dr Wily in Megaman as "Doctor Willee".

Some kid in grade school said those that way - and we still make fun of those to this day.

"Seg-Uh"

FFS some games even scream the name correctly at you on boot up. It's "Say-guh" you blockheads.

Doesn't matter. How the character himself pronounces it takes precedence.
That is how the character pronounces it.

Maybe we aren't disagreeing if we could say it out loud to each other. We just disagree about what other words it sounds like because..... Regional accents.

Dunno about Weird but I really like how the Announcer of KoF 97 pronounced the name of the characters:
WINNER IS LARV!
WINNER IS LOWBEAR!
WINNER IS YAH MAH ZAHKI!

Oh and let's not forget KoF MI2's announcer!
KYOO KUUUUSANAGIIIIIIIIIIIIII!

Batman Arka-ham Asylum / City

My brother does this no matter how many times I've corrected him. He LOVES the Arkham games and has played them both to completion several times. The name is said throughout both games, and yet he still says ark-HAM rather than ARkum. He just can't not pronounce the H.

Technically not a pronounciation but:

Kingdom OF Hearts
LLShC.gif

Zid-ayne for Zidane (it's Zid-ann)
Pretty sure it should be either Zay-dan or Zuh'y-dan.

As for me, Hwoarang from Tekken used to be "Whore-or-rang" like a boomerang that really got around.
I used to call him How-rang, after playing force mode I started calling him Huh-wa-rang.

And then there's Xiaoyu, I think I used to call her Zaw-yu and then switched to Shaw-yu. I think I've heard someone call her Exo-ya.
Oh and Xianghua, I used to comically call her Zian-guh-wa (with a pronounceable h).

My 14 year old little brother calls Pokemon evolutions 'ivulsions', like 'emulsion'. I've told him like 300 times that he's wrong but he doesn't care.

Anyone who says Merio can die in a fire.

"Ninja Gay-den"

Yes. I don't even see how you can pronounce Mario like that.

Planet Zebes.

I'm not even sure if I have it right but I refuse to change. I pronounce it "Zebz", but I'm generally okay with "Zeebz" too.

I just don't know what to think when I hear "Zeebeez."

But that's how I've always pronounced it D:

Also, I pronounce Raiden like Ray-den not Rye-den. Mortal Kombat vs Metal Gear.

Super "Mare"-Rio Brothers. was probably the first pronounciation weirdness i ever experiened....followed by Ninja Gaiden.prounonced like "Maiden"

With all due respect, he doesn't.
Then you're only disagreeing with how to spell that sound.

You know what? I've actually met Charles Martinet and I know how he says it. No joke! Lol

.
I was thinking in romaji. Read it like this: Meh-ri-o. It's the same thing that people are writing as Mare-e-o or whatever. (And it's wrong).

This Mario pronunciation stuff is serious business.

The American way of saying Mario, "Mery-Ohh"

Not all americans do this, but i am baffled that people still do this. Its not like its some hidden move in Street Fighter EX Turbo Fighter Edition Mega Special for the 3DO, its the most famous video game character in the world. Mario is right up there with Mickey Mouse etc.

That's not an "American" thing. It's a New York thing...and it's stupid.

Mario pronounces his own name "Mah-ree-oh". There's a voice actor and everything! Surely the character himself knows how to say his name correctly...

Probably because he's North American.

No other regional accent in the world says it the North American way, from what I've heard.

This does indeed come down to regional accents, and how people have been brought up speaking certain words. I'm gonna wager I guess that you pronounce "pasta" and "kebab" like "pah-sta" and "ke-bahb" too. Again, a North American thing.

I've heard people pronounce Kratos' name in some pretty strange ways..."Krah-toes" or "Kray-toes," or even "Krah-tus"/"Kray-tus"

Doos Ex
Superintenno
Ninja Gayden
Metal Gear SOLID

Plus more WoW boss / item names than I can possibly remember from two plus years of raiding. Good luck getting 40 people to pronounce C'thun the same way....

I remember way back when the commercial for either Super Mario Brothers 2 or 3 said Mario as Mary-o. Bothered the hell out of me.

edit: found it, it was 2.
