So far the only real contender for me is CO: E33. Its a game that combines so many things of what I love about games. Cool story, great characters, amazing music, fun gameplay, exciting and worthwhile exploration. Its a game that stays with you after beating it.

I guess the only game that will have a shot is Ghost of Yotei. Loved the first one and this GoY looks great so far.

Battlefield 6 gets an honorable mention, I dont usually consider MP as GoY, sincethey are usually a multi year afair. But the Beta was certainly A LOT of fun and threw me back to the good old times of BF.

Overall this year does not come close to last year for me personally, just kind of a mid year.

So Clair Obscur is that good huh? Guess I'll have to get around to it.

PC or PS5 Pro? Wondering whether this is a controller or M&KB game.

It's a turn based game, it should not matter unless you hate to parry with keyboard buttons for some reason.

Expedition 33, didn't play DK Bananza but it would be really tough to beat E33. Maybe Silksong can dethrone it, that's the only thing I can think of that has a chance.

Haven't decided yet. Halfway through Exp 33 and yet to play KCD 2. Absolutely stacked year for me.

Downloaded Assassin's Creed Mirage from GP to check out. Disgusting, coming from Doom TDA and Exp 33. Deleted instantly.

This year has no place for mediocre games.

I'd give it Death Stranding 2 if it weren't for driving the off-roader into a raspberry bush destroys your cargo like hitting a boulder

I like that it keeps people honest!

In a game that's almost entirely about getting from point A to point B using a vast array of tools, its kinda shocking to me how unimaginative some people are that they seek to do everything using the most basic-bitch method possible!

Especially as unlike the first game which really favoured sheer weight/volume carried as THE best method for maximizing rank, in DS2 progress is actually gated behind specific deliveries and actions that often involve different challenges than simple quantity.

Hence. my GOTY so far.

Expedition 33

The only thing that could give it a run for me at this point is maybe Hollow Knight Silksong if it's even releasing this year.

E33 might even be a top 3 game this generation for me

My short list:

Donkey Kong Bananza
Avowed
Citizen Sleeper 2
Eternal Strands
South of Midnight
Doom Dark Ages
Clair Obscur
Rematch

Still many games I'd like to play, like Keeper, Stone of Madness, Blue Prince, Shinobi, High on Life 2, Ninja Gaiden 4, Outer Worlds 2, Blades of Fire, Sonic Racing Crossworlds, The Alters, Demonschool, Octopath Traveler 0, Metal Eden, Metroid Prime 4, and more.

Donkey Kong Bananza is my current contender for game of 2025 followed by Fantasy Life i: The Girl Who Steals Time, which I spent way too many hours playing as it was difficult to put down!

I also spent a lot of time (67+ hours!) playing Oblivion Remastered on PC, which I admit I enjoyed a lot but I feel the game is unfortunately too flawed in terms of performance (the stuttering is atrocious) to ever consider including in a Game of the Year list. The developers have clearly abandoned the game now and it leaves me concerned as to how well the upcoming Metal Gear Solid 3 Remake will run because that is also being done by the same developer and is another game that runs Unreal Engine 5 on top of the original engine...

Interesting poll result.
Donkey Kong Bananza vs Clair Obscur

A well written story driven game with great OST & beautiful newly imagined universe albeit good-but-not-incredible gameplay
vs
A game that is all about the essence of "play" & "fun" in the first place.

The eternal unanswerable question.
I'd be unable to decide which parameter to focus on when delivering a "GOTY" reward. tbh.
It's like asking about the preference between blue & red color.

I'd answer Clair Obscur because of emotional impact but it's subjective.

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.
Only game that had me thinking about it constantly for 2 weeks, after finishing it.

My personal pick would be KCD 2, but if we are talking about predicting the winner, I'm fully expecting it to be a close match between Expedition 33 and Donkey Kong.

It's still Tainted Grail Fall of Avalon.
Damn, I almost forgot I have yet to give this one a try.
From what I've seen I can't honestly say I'm a fan of its aesthetic, but everyone who played it vouches for its quality.

Better than Baldurs Gate 3 ?

I have only played a little but I prefer it to BG3 so far.

I'd say it is on par with BG3. Lots of differences though. It doesn't have all the polish and shine of BG3. Doesn't have the voice acting. Doesn't have the big sprawling world to explore since it is space based, but it still has plenty to explore. Personally, I like the characters in RT more than BG3. Also love all the systems. Trading is well thought out and goes well beyond the usual "get gold/buy shit" mechanic. Also loot feeds into trading heavily, but again, more than just buy/sell. There are factions, reputation, etc. Then you have space faring and battles. So I'd say there is a lot more depth to RT than BG3. That doesn't necessarily mean it will automatically be better to a lot of folks because the learning curve is a bit much. I'm not done with the game so I can't speak to the story. BG3's was great and massive. Really they are both great games.

I need to get around to playing Clair Obscur, so I can have an informed opinion. I tend to get preoccupied with games released a couple years ago and miss out on the current crop. I want to check out Avalon, too, but I'm waiting for it to get patched first..

Yeah, I've never played the candidates till later years, the backlog does not allow anything else.

I *might* get to play Baldur's Gate 3 before the end of this year, maybe.

I LOVED Expedition 33 but my GOTY has go to Donky Kong Bananza, that game was just pure fun.

In all honestly really don't care what wins in VGA shows, I'm mostly watch them for new game announcements.

I thought this thread was personal GOTY and not Geoff's though

My personal one is DKB for now

Expedition 33 will win Geoff's because it's a feel good story about a small French team that got out of evil Ubisoft to make dream game etc start the violins. I'm fine with it winning GOTY anyway because it was mine as well until DKB, but game awards are so predictable

You think Doritospope will miss a chance to fawn over Kojima?

Confused Good Question GIF by Choice Hotels

You bring a good point

But no, not the GOTY, they'll give death stranding 2 pity awards

I think they don't want to make waves with a choice that would be too obviously biased and against the flow

This is a good explanation of the show and I agree pretty much with all of it

Sure, but it is also one of the best RPG I've played in 30 years. A story that adults can actually enjoy, which just does not happen.

Again, I have nothing against it, it was my runner up too. I wouldn't agree on 30 years claim, the game has flaws imo but that's just preference.

But it's also kind of predictable, regardless of upcoming games in the remaining of 2025.

Downplaying E33 achievements to a mere "feel good story about a small French team that got out of evil Ubisoft to make dream game etc start the violins" is just idiotic.

Its the same of someone saying that DK Bananza ll win goty just cause its a Nintendo game and Nintendo game 99% of the time get a pass.

Not everyone thinks it's the second coming.

And he's completely right about how GOTY is selected at that show, and by journalists more broadly. They are more concerned with crafting a narrative that says something about themselves and what they want people to talk about, than they are strictly assessing quality of games in as objective of a manner as possible. Sometimes the two things accidentally overlap, but often they don't.

This is why GOTY is a joke.
