Ah, Vancouver Island, not Vancouver. No worries then!

Honestly, I think this is probably a mixture of paranoia/demonstration. After what happened in South-East Asia, we may see a lot of these warnings over the next several years.

That would take out quite a few movie stars, which would make room for my debut.

heh, i just got a message while watching espn. the emergency alert system actually gives me something relevant...well kinda. i feel pretty good having a nice mountain seperating me from the pacific. didn't feel the quake at all from here (marin).

and pollo, i've been on both coasts and even with the occasional quake (and now a possible tsunami), i think the guy upstairs likes us more.

Yeah. ForecastFox told me there was a "severe weather alert". I was like, it's just cloudy outside.

Tsunami warning... scary.

Atleast I live 3,000+ feet above the ocean.

The weather's been pretty damn weird here in Vancouver the past couple days, today included. It'd be perfectly sunny with few clouds overhead, and then a thunderstorm a few miles over. Quite disconcerting, and I hope nothing really bad happens.

It's being reported on Channel 9 here in Los Angeles, they say it was 7.0 magnitude 80 miles off the coast of Northern California.

Major Quake Strikes Off California Coast

CRESCENT CITY, Calif. - A major earthquake struck Tuesday night about 80 miles off the coast of northern California, prompting a tsunami warning along the Pacific coast.

The 7.0-magnitude quake struck at about 7:50 p.m. southwest of the coastal community of Crescent City, according to the
U.S. Geological Survey Web site.

A tsunami warning was in effect from the California-Mexico border north to Vancouver Island, British Columbia.

Residents were being evacuated from low-lying areas of Crescent City, KCBS radio reported.

So there were no repercussions from a 7.0 earthquake a mere 80 miles off the coast of Cali? No high waves...nothing? Isn't that odd? I mean, from my understanding, a 7.0 is pretty significant.

Not that I wish death and destruction on you Cali folk, it just strikes me as curious. :p

Tsunamis are generally formed when the plates move vertically against each other, displacing the water and creating waves. In this case, the plates just grinded up against each other, kind of like rubbing your hands together.

No, she was just on trial in Santa Maria.

So it was a transform fault as opposed to a convergent or divergent boundary, I assume? That would make sense given the direction of motion-- I didn't think of that possibility. :)

This is news to me. I can't see a whole big chunk of land with heights above sea level sinking though, if it did happen there would be numerous islands.
In relation to this, 300 Acres of land in Ireland disappear every year, due to the battering the Island gets from the Atlantic Ocean. Although we haven't earthquakes to look forward to.
