Are Westinghouse sets, you know, serious? I saw a few at Best Buy about two weeks ago, and all I could think of was how they used to make refrigerators way back in the day, when the only "desperate housewife" was Donna Reed tearing the kitchen apart looking for a pan big enough to bake a cake.

But if they're actual, quality sets that are just low-balling the competition because they don't have a name really synonymous with electronics, I'll consider them. I might need a new set soon, and I'm not ruling out LCDs completely.

They are both serious and above average.

When dealing with LCD sets what you're most interested in is who makes the screen (or glass at the techheads call it) that is behind the set. Most of the screens out there are actually made by a much smaller number of LCD glass makers and is simple remarked into a particular brand. A lot of people have publicly poo-poo'd some of the lower end sets only to find that its the exact same component as some of the higher end Panasonic or Toshiba sets.

This year at CES the LCD makers made a point to note that this year they were going to do two things:

1) Go 1080p all over the place
2) Drop the price of LCD sets significantly

So sit back and watch the collapse of high priced LCD (and plasma) sets across the board.

Am I the only one who prefers tubes over LCD and Plasma? Right now I have a 32" Sony Wega and always compare it to tv's I see in stores. Overall better HD pic quality imo - I'm actually in the market for another set and thinking of sticking with a tube.

The reason why tubes look better deals with the resolution of the SD content. Its the same reason why EDTV plasmas also tend to look better than HDTV plasmas. Since the content (even much of the available HD content) doesn't get much higher than 720. I actually went through a large number of tubes recently and unless you REALLY need to display actual high resolution (like from a computer for instance), they look fine. if you try to display a computer screen on them they look pretty much ass - all the time. Since its far easier to downsample the HD to the lower resolution of most tubes, HD content can look good on them and for the most part I still likel tubes a lot.

The industry is pretty much trying to phase them out actually. While there are new models of tube sets coming out, the industry move is towards plasma and LCD (and to a lesser extent SED/OLED).

Yeah, I am very bullish on Field Emission Displays, carbon nanotube or otherwise....I think they will be the next big thing in flat panels.....at least they will combine the best of CRT (shadow detail, color accuracy) with alot of the best qualities of flat panels (color uniformity, size, thiness, viewing angle).....

Hopefully they won't cost an arm and a leg at first....

At this point, Motorola and Samsung (CNT FEDs) are saying they will be cheap but Toshiba and Canon (SEDs) are saying the will not...

Watching all of this closely...

Wait, so there's going to be a wave of price drops for LCD's in the near future? Anyone know when this sort of thing usually happens?

Its not really so much a 'set time' as it is that there are more players attacking the market a lower price point this year and the LCD folks at CES have said that they intend to be price competitive with Plasma (which is currently a lot cheaper). The market leaders are sayting that they want 32s at a $1499 price point which makes me very happy as that's what I'm in the market for.
