DF Weekly: What does the Switch 2 motherboard leak say about system performance?

Eh.. The vast majority of software sold on Switch are 3rd party software and Nintendo gets commission on each one.

They host dedicated Nintendo Directs for 3rd party software partners and indies.

They also change specification of their hardware to fit the needs of 3rd party partners.

They definitely need them and care about keeping them.
This isn't actually all that true, look at this:
Top Selling Switch Games

The top 23 best selling Switch games are ALL Nintendo. And 21 of them are in double digits of millions.

Nintendo may want to keep third parties on board to fill in the void when Nintendo themselves have nothing to release, but they absolutely do not care in general about where people are playing third party games because the majority of Nintendo's game sales ARE first party titles. It's effectively icing on the cake for them.

Total software sales on Switch are 1.306 million. Nintendo software, while selling incredible, will most definitely make up less than 500M of that number, and I feel like that’s being generous without having done the math.

Dude if you read the text before the Wiki list, just Nintendo's top 5 franchises (Mario, Zelda, Splatoon, Kirby, Pokemon) alone are at around 450 million total on the Switch, that's not even including Smash or Animal Crossing.

They've already sold far more than 500 million, you guys are seriously underestimating just how much first party titles carry Nintendo's sales. It's been like this for decades now.

True, that narrows it down a bit and it’s definitely more than I thought. Very impressive as usual. Those are all the major sellers though so I doubt ‘far more’ than 500M is in the cards.

In any case though, if you sum up the data you’ll get a number that is far less than the total number of software sold on the system. I.e. 3rd party software is the vast majority of the software being sold.

Wikipedia is a terrible source for this, since the vast majority of third parties don't give platform breakdowns on games.

That's why that Wikipedia list is mostly Switch exclusives and Namco games. It doesn't have FIFA, Hogwarts etc. because those sales numbers aren't publicly available.

This is the actual data:

This is from a section in Nintendo's presentation to investors all about the importance of third parties. These numbers don't include the sales from download-only games, or the revenue from free-to-play titles (both of which are areas third parties dominate).

You want an even more direct source?

PDF of Nintendo's March 2024 Fiscal Year Results

There's a slide in here (page 19) where they show that nearly 80% percent of their sales and revenue comes from first party titles.

I'm sorry but I think y'all are misunderstanding my point in that while Nintendo DOES want to keep third-parties onboard, they absolutely do not care about competing with PS/Xbox for third-party coverage. They make a massive shitload of money primarily on first party.

The margins on first party software (85% to 100%) are certainly higher than on third party software (30%), but that's still a big contribution to their profits.

Better third party support makes their platform more attractive and sell more. They don't care about third parties as much as Sony or Microsoft, but they would love to get third party support as good as PlayStation does.
