Wet Shaving |OT| The Cutting Edge of Grooming

I hate to say this, but I dont think I reccomend the razo rock razors. The moving part in the center of mine must be rusty or something, because it is getting difficult to twist open. It was only 18, but I wish I would have bought something a little more pricey.

Kinda had a feeling they would cut corners in the making of it. My Merkur 34C is still going strong after a year.

Damn, sorry to hear that. I heard only good things up until now.
Some people use mineral oil IIRC to lube the interior of the razor, perhaps that would help.

Yeah, I have a bottle of this I am going to try. I don't mean to talk badly of Razo Rock though. It was my fault for expecting something extraordinary for that price point. Next time, I am going to try and find something with the same opening style as Merkur. This 'butterfly' opening seems to not last very long. The biggest problem I am having is that the little piece which the blade sits on is turning red, and breaking apart. I have a feeling I am going to cut myself soon if that continues.

Alright, I'm tempted to take the plunge (so sick of expensive disposable mach 3 blades) and wanted to get some input on my prospective purchases.

Razorock Classic Twist
Semogue 620
RazoRock Shave soap smell like a conqueror
Alum block

and maybe a syptic pencil since I think im super close to free shipping

Going to go with Astra razors, but will order them from amazon since they are cheaper

So, look good? am I missing anything important? And is that shaving brush actually worth the price? Looked like there were several cheaper options, but people in this thread said good things about it

I started wet shaving and I'm having trouble shaving the mustache area. People say to let the razor's weight do the shaving, and while that works for most of my face, it doesn't for the area under my nose.

Can I apply more pressure or shave against the grain there? I'm forced to use my Mach 3's upper blade to shave that place right now.

Personally, I think you should save a little more and get a Merkur HD.

I like the Razorock brand, but I won't get sad if you don't like it :lol
Maybe you could try sending an e-mail to Joe, the guy in charge of Italian Barber. He seems like a nice guy and maybe you could get a refund or something.

Someone just had problems with a Razorock razor. You should check for reviews on the Badger & Blade forums to see if others have had problems before buying one. I have the Semogue 620 and it's great, especially for hard soaps. The soap is a good choice too if you like the smell. If you're getting an alum block, IMO a styptic pencil isn't worth it.

Once you're comfortable with the basics, don't be afraid to experiment to get better results. Everybody's face is different. You'll know if it doesn't feel like such a hot idea.

My cheeks get a down, cross, and diagonal pass with a bit of pressure.
My neck gets down and up pass with no pressure
My mustache gets a down, and cross pass - pressure varies
My chin gets a down and cross pass - no pressure.

It took 25 shaves, and a few nicks to get it just right, but it's part of the process.

I may be out of touch, but I think $22 is too much for a boar brush. There was someone earlier in the thread selling silver tip badger for that much.

For styptic, I like the pacific shaving nick stick, or something equivalent. It costs a little more, but they last forever, assuming you learn to shave without butchering yourself (its not hard, you'll be fine). It also burns like hell, but that's a nice reminder to be more careful, and you don't have to worry about white residue on your face.

I don't own an alum block so I have no opinion on that.

Just wanted to post an email sent to me by Joseph.

Hi Sean,

All returns must be made within 30 days of purchase and must have all the original package.

Unfortunately, those razors are budget, entry level raozrs and we aren't able to offer lifetime warranty. It's very common for TTO razors to get tight if soap and oils get in the mechanism; make sure you thoroughly rinse the razor after each use.

kind regards,

Joseph

That's unfortunate. I've been using the three-piece open comb model since November and haven't had a problem with it. But yeah I guess TTOs would have a much higher failure rate.

In good product news though, I have a new favorite soap. I've been using Mike's Natural Soaps Barber shop scent and it's fantastic. Very easy to create a slick, cushiony lather.

Fellas, I just received my Merkur blade from amazon. I think I have the blade in correctly, but can someone verify the correct end that should be facing up? Thanks!

I got the Merkur 34C a year ago because of this thread with a Badger brush and have never looked back. Don't skimp on the razor and it'll last you forever, that was my thinking. I want this thing when i'm an old man.

Also, just got a dispenser style 100 pack of Feather blades for $20 AU. Took me a long time to get through the test blades and my favorite blades were between the Gillette Platinums and Feathers.

It doesn't matter which side is up. They are the same.

This is correct. If you're using blades like Astras or Gillette 7 O'Clocks that have glue spots on them, I tend to put the glue spots facing up. I just find it easier to clean it off of the top cap than the baseplate.

Last night I shaved off the beard I've had for the past four years. I used an electric trimmer to start and then finished with my safety razor. I was worried about irritation or cutting myself but it came out without a hitch. I love my safety razor!

What's a good way to maintain a slight stubble? I've always been told I look good with a stubble but since I shave using a DE razor, I only look like that every 3 days or so. Electric razor? If so, any recommendations for a cheap/decent one?

I trim the hair on my beard and mustache down using hair clippers with a #1 clip with the adjustment bringing the blade up so it's more like a #0.5. Then I use my DE to clean up the lines and neck area.

Same, I've been using my sampler pack for well over a year now and just got around to buying a full case of Feathers (Derby's also served me well though the Feathers seem to last more shaves).

I paid a buck more for the black packaged Feathers, though I have no idea if there's actually any difference. They were the ones I had in my sampler, and were great, so I figured if I'm buying a hundred of the things they should be identical.

This is a cross post from manshion but I figured you guys might be interest. Warby Parker's guys are launching a shaving site aimed at high quality/low cost. It's not DE shaving but the handles & blades look pretty nice.

Is that something like the Dollar Shave Club? Never used that service, but researching it (and ways to cut costs on shaving) is what led me to DE razors to start with.

Speaking of DE's, I got a new Merkur 37C slant razor last week and it's really working well for me. It gets just as close a shave as my other DE's with what feels like much less effort, and there's less irritation overall. I can definitely recommend it.

For people who do this, how long it takes and how often you do it?

I have to shave every day but this seems like a big time commitment to do it so often.

It takes the same amount of time a typical shave would, IMO. Maybe slightly longer. I place my brush into a cup of hot water. Then I brush my teeth while the brush softens up. Lather the shaving cream with the brush for 30 seconds. Then shave. Simple.

I do make multiple passes instead of just one now, so it does take longer in that regard. But it's not a huge difference.

So Harry's launched today (shaving store from the Warby Parker guys). Looks like prices are quite low, even though it's not DE shaving.

I picked up a Winston set as a gift. The five blade cartridge seems comparable to a Fusion for half the money and beyond.

Eyeglasses and razors, two industries which I've completely bailed on.

For people that still use cartridge shaving, Harry's is prolly a good way to go. I'll be sticking with DE but for gifts, it looks pretty great.

So guys, i ran out of blades (just being dumb and not ordering ahead) and I had to use a goddamn disposable 3 blade schick for almost a month now. I forgot how awful it was. Pulling hairs, awful razor burn, bumps, even some acne. My face has just gotten spoiled. I need the wetshave, the real mccoy. Luckily I found my sampler pack yesterday that I thought I lost! Shark, Astra SP, Derby, 2 kinds of 7 o clock gillettes...

Ready to shave tomorrow, I have a full beard so it will be glorious. Giving birth to a hair baby

I know that feeling, I had to travel the other month and only took a carry-on, so I brought a 5-blade disposable I had left over. Yikes, razorburn everywhere.

This weekend I'm going to one of the meccas of wet shaving, Pasteur's in NYC. No idea what I'll pick up, but I've been looking forward to this all month.

A look inside.

Anyone tried Taylor of Old Bond's Eton College soap?

Thinking it might be my next cop, i'm looking for something more... youthful/aggressive to replace my proraso scentwise. Open to suggestions of course.

Hi Guys,

Many of you have seen the viral video produced by Dollar Shave Club.

The irony of the video is none of their offering are a dollar a month, and, he mentions his "handsome ass" Grandfather shaving with "one blade".

If you have family or friends that want to try DE shaving but are on a tight budget, I've put together a real "Dollar Shave Kit".

If you could help me spread the word and share this, I would really appreciate it.

Anyone else have an issue where facial/neck hair grows in different directions? Or is this common and not just me?

It makes it so difficult to shave.

I think this is pretty common. My facial hair grows downward, but on the neck it grows horizontally outward from the adam's apple on each side.

alright bros, I need some help.

I made the big switch to double-edged razor and lathered cream and all that noise. my face was a disaster for the first few weeks but I've basically got a handle on it now.

now I have this problem: this razor does wonders from beard to bare--if I let it grow out a week or so, I get the most beautiful shave of my life.

however, I'm having serious troubs with upkeep shaving. basically, every time I try and shave like 2 days worth of stubble, I end up raw and spotting blood for a good ten minutes.

do y'all do the whole thing every/every other day? why's my stubble coming off so gnarly?

Everyday. If I were to guess, I would say that you're pressing the razor too hard against your face. When you've got a week's worth of growth, maybe it acts as a bit of a cushion by protecting you against the worst of the cuts.

Another possibility is that you might be drawing the blade across your face too quickly with just a tad too much force. I'm left handed and whenever this happens to me, it's because I've done exactly as I just described under my right jaw line.

In addition to being particularly well-suited to this thread, I find my avatar serves me well in most of the threads on GAF.

as well as a few of my own posts

Sometimes I feel the need to post in a thread in the midst of its descent into madness just to make the avatar quote possible.

At the price point of Edwin Jagger's shaving soaps, do you guys have a preferred option?

Sandalwood preferred.

Proraso sandalwood would be a safe bet.

I've settled into using two creams and a soap in my regular rotation.

Arko Shaving soap stick
Proraso
Palmolive For Men Classic Palm Extract Shave Cream

Love the Arko stick even if it does smell like urinal cake. Great lather. Definitely worthy of rotation.

Arko is my go to face lather soap. Great lather quickly. It's very good stuff.

I'd say my favorite regular is the Palmolive w/ palm extract. I need to set up a European connection at some point to secure my supply.
