What a Sorry State of Gaming from all sides

The amount of complaining on this forum has become unbearable.

It is as if the human mind was devoid of the ability to seek inspiration or motivate itself to do anything for its own good.

If you think you've explored all the best your hobby has to offer and for one reason or another you're unable to accept the direction the gaming industry is heading, then look into something else.

In 1996, new N64 games typically cost between $60 and $80
How much did we have to pay extra for "early access" or DLC to get a complete copy of the game and microtransactions for cosmetics or worse pay more to win in 1996?

Also Mario Kart 64 had 16 tracks and 8 characters. No options. No online play either.

I can understand complaining about DLC or paying to get weapons and gear, but complaining cosmetics is dumb. It's literally cosmetic.

They haven't had a (true next-gen) handheld sell under ~80mn yet. And now have both console and handheld combined. And it's been an 8 year generation. Or 12 yr generation if one realizes the Wii U was the same generation but tethered to the tv or Gamepad.

And specs? Specs don't sell Nintendo consoles. You're just insanely off if you think any of the spec talk you typed up matters 1 iota.

What matters most is do people love MKW. Will they love DK Bananza? etc.
Console:
Nintendo / Famicom: 61.91m
SNES: 49.10m
N64: 32.93m
Gamecube: 21.74m
Wii: 101.63m
WiiU: 13.56m

Handheld:
Gameboy Monochrome / Gameboy Color: 118.69
Gameboy Advance: 81.51m
DS: 154.98 incl.(93.86m DSLite, 41.33m DSi)
3DS: 42.74m incl.(15.21m 3DS-XL, 2.11m 2DS)

Hybrid:
Virtual Boy: less than 6months life. no #s
Switch: 150.83m incl. (Switch Lite, Switch OLED)

What I see in 30years of Nintendo is that following every huge success is a lackluster response from buyers. I chalk it up to burnout. Why buy another X console when I got Y.
Wii > WiiU (88m unit loss)
DS > 3DS (112m unit loss)
Gameboy > Gamboy Advance (37m unit loss)
Nintendo's track record is not flawless.

Sadly, I owned all the downward releases after the SNES. Gamecube, N64, Advance, 3DS. I bought a switch on the promise of Metroid Prime 4 in 2017. Owned it for maybe a year after, only playing Octopath Traveller on it. Now its donated to an elementary school. They got my money, and I am a bit gun shy to do it again.

As far as specs go. Its going to be a developer optics response. I feel the developers are going to have a come to Jesus moment at how hard it will be to port games to it.

Jimmy Carr says happiness is quality of life minus envy.

This performative misery is all about jealousy of some other you at some other time. And the circle-jerk of industry hate is worse than incorrect.

It's lame.

I got to wonder for the people complaining about "negative post," "complaining" etc. etc.

You read the fucking title and still decided to read it. That either means you wanted to read it or you are an idiot.

Some of us are having a great time because there's so many good games that are coming out. Not even halfway through the year and we've had KCD2 and Expedition 33. There's more to life than 1st party games.

It's not normal that Xbox, Playstation, and Nintendo all released their titles at the same time and agreed on something... I feel like they're all in the video game mafia.

Speak for yourself, I'm having a blast with games like Clair Obscur, MHWilds and Xenoblade X DE and super excited for Switch 2.

if you can't find games to enjoy maybe it's time for you to find different hobby instead of wasting time crying about it.

I'd have agreed with you a few months ago, but now it seems PS5 is really picking up steam. Not with exclusives though, exclusives make zero sense kn this day and age and they'll be gone for good anyway.

Well done OP

This is where I'm at. I've settled into a little corner pocket of retro emulation, older AAA games, and Indies, basically whatever my PC handhelds can handle. I have too much good stuff sitting in my library and on emulators to worry about this bullshit. I scale my interaction with this industry at a level I'm willing to meet it, and not where company X has decided they want/need a larger slice of the pie. I've learned to accept what it and isn't for me, and that goes beyond gaming. It's incumbent on the industry to figure out its financial health in a way that doesn't completely crater the fucking thing. In the meantime I'm gonna enjoy my $10 Steam games off CDkeys.

However, their audience also only plays older f2p games, humble bundle and deals. Very few play new slate releases, and that is not a healthy market. PC market has been fucked by PC gamers for years and they are going to have to start ponying up like everyone else. The industry demands it.

On that note, we also wanted to use this Year In Review to talk about the opportunity for new products. 2024 was the Steam platform's best year ever in terms of customers buying newly released games.

New Release revenue per year has increased almost exactly 10x since 2014.
In 2024, more than 500 new titles exceeded $250,000 in New Release revenue (up 27% from 2023).
In 2024, more than 200 new titles exceeded $1 million in New Release revenue (up 15% from 2023).

Womp womp.

Is it me, or does it seem like the more PC-centric Gaf becomes, the more whiny?

Going by the poll in that PC vs consoles thread, ~63% of Gaf is on the PC side.
Gaf also has been non-stop whining for quite some time.

Or maybe it's just old men yelling at clouds.
I dunno, but it's pathetic. Lol
Pc gamers and whining go together like peanut butter and jelly.

its like religion.

People who leaves a religion notices how flawed their it was

I think gaming as in a choice of games is pretty great as long as you bought your hardware 5 years ago.

Games from large studios are so bankrupt of any actual intelligent game design that it's awful. Literally every big game is some form of ubisoft open world copy. It's shite

Thank God for Asia and smaller studios with a sense of risk and game design.

As long as it's anyone else apart from the sony crowd you guys are good. It's not like gaming hasn't been this whiny forever. I guess you guys enjoyed it when you were on the "winning" side vs pc and would circle jerk how amazing PS was. (They were)

There is no difference on here. It's the same it's ever been.

I was talking PC vs console. No idea how you turn it into Sony vs the rest?

And no, it isn't the same as it always was.
Joined Gaf after Gaf and Era split up and Gaf hasn't ever been as whiny as it has been in recent years.
The whining even escalated rapidly since last year.

Every time someone brings up how games cost $80 in the 1990s I want to punch myself in the face.

In the 90s, car payments were half as much
In the 90s, housing was much much cheaper
In the 90s, eating out was 1/4 the cost
In the 90s, groceries were 1/4 the cost
In the 90s, purchasing power was way higher
In the 90s, college tuition was 1/4 the cost

so go ahead, keeping justifying $80 games and $600 machines because it was just "like this" in the 90s.
will it was 3do 700$ neogo carts 100$ or more.

It's not whiny, it's having higher standards. As filthy peasant you have to eat whatever your master serves. As pc gamer YOU are the master.
Please don't disturb me with an answer, i have to touch my face for the rest of the day.

Rockstar: I made a topic a few months about why we have not seen any news or new Trailers on GTA 6 and of course all the shills quoted rockstar, "But they confirmed it was 2025!" Normally I understand a delay but not when your last game was 13 fucking years ago.

Nintendo: They are creating a WiiU situation here. Of course the Nintendo Dorks will have it sell out for the first year of launch, after that is the issue. The Crazy prices, the confusing upgrade packages, and just weird marketing is going to confuse the Causal gamer. Like it or not, the casual gamer is where the big bucks are. Switch 2 will be a success but no where near the original. Corporate Greed hit Nintendo hard.

Xbox: Don't even get me started. There are few exclusive worth a Damn anymore on the Xbox console. Microsoft purchased a ton of companies but I wonder where the fuck the games are? On top of that, they have the nerve to jack up the prices on their low selling Xbox Series console. Just fucking stupid.

Sony: Man they fell out this generation. So many great Sony first party exclusive games on PSx, PS2, PS3, PS4, and the PS5 is just crickets. There have been very few first party games for the PS5 and do not see much on the horizon. They spent Billions on bullshit GAAS games and have nothing to show for it. Compared to previous generations, the PS5 library is pathetic.

PC: The biggest player in the PC space Nvidia just released their most shitty product ever. The overpriced 50xx series is a piece of shit and not worth the value. It's barely an upgrade from the 40xx series and now you can openly find 50xx series cards on Shelves(corrected). They even lied about the prices when shown. The prices they displayed on their reveal you cannot even find at big named retailers. The performance increases over the 40xx series are minimal.

Thank god for game emulation and older games. New games keep asking for more money because of "production cost" but the product is getting worse. They want I and others to pay more money for a worse product.

Pathetic!

Eventually the Nay sayers will be less and less... this gen its the culmination off accepting every dog shit they throw at us and clapping like seals, woke influenced games? I dont care... incomplete and unoptomized game ? I dont care... full of mtx game ? I dont care... and so on ... the bar got so low that now it is what it is.

One good thing about this gen though... japan publishers and studios got more attention and other asian players got in the game, so honestly most western studios can just fuck off witht their bullshit, we will be fine anyway.

Your only beef with PC gaming is that Nvidia released an overpriced generation?

Vote with your wallet and buy a 9070XT or something from an older generation.
CPUs are almost overpowered these days, basically any modern one will power through any game.
RAM is pocket change.
SSDs are (last time i check) super cheap.
B and H motherboards are totally viable because OC'ing CPUs isnt really worthwhile (they already boost high enough).
Upscaling techniques are getting really really good, a 4K panel is actually doable for even lower tier GPUs.
Most hardware is now top tier CPU coolers like the Peerless Assassin keep up with AIOs.

I could go on and on.

I got to wonder for the people complaining about "negative post," "complaining" etc. etc.

You read the fucking title and still decided to read it. That either means you wanted to read it or you are an idiot.

Or they want to complain about your complaining, heh.

I see a mixed bag myself. There are definitely negative trends that have been going on a long time, but there are still plenty of experiences to enjoy.

I go through periods where I just check out of gaming for a while. I'm in one now. Haven't felt the desire to play anything for about a month. Eventually, though, I always return. Taking a break can help to restore your feelings about gaming. If you're feeling particularly negative and cynical, checking out of gaming forums for a while can help, too. We all tend to focus more on the negative than the positive.

Having standards, being picky and calling this industries BS out is not "whining". It's simply not being a braindead consuming zombie
That being said, complaining all day isn't exactly healthy, either. Get some fresh air, do something else, come back relaxed and positive. Life's too short to be upset about this shit
Vote with your wallet is a thing, but it's also true that even if the whole internet community across all platforms steers in the same direction with every single title, thus "sending a message", it wouldn't change anything. You are fighting against windmills at this point, as the mass market doesn't give a shit and has standards so low you wouldn't believe. So the only thing you can do is accept that certain mainstream/AAA products just aren't for you anymore and move on.

3ds sold nearly 80mn. You're short changing it. ;). That is the low point of handheld. And given console is combined with handheld now and given it has been an 8 yr generation. 12 yr generation for the tv part - 50mn sounds low as I said.

As far as enjoyment goes, past Nintendo platforms which sold fewer units have been some of the best. GameCube was a fav of mine. And when a platform isn't doing as well often can get it cheaper and/or Nintendo throws the customer some treats like free games.

Yea man, of which I was excited for. I loved the pricing and games offered on those consoles as well.

I just believe this is a bad spot to start the race from. You have people who are comfortable with what they have, and there is no overwhelming scream for a new console. I mean shit its 150m WW there is bound to be fatigue at the prospect of throwing $500 USD at a console and game.

God forbid if the tariffs kick in full gore. That'll be close to $1200 USD to get a switch 2 in USA. We'll see if Trump is just posturing or pulls the trigger on that end of things. It'll be a rough 4 year start if that happens.
"Major" Nintendo supplier warns Nintendo Switch 2 will be subject to 145% US tariffs

The numbers were from WIkipedia which sourced the #s from Nintendos financials
Nintend Video Game Consoles [7]
Yet, when I click on [45] which is a gameindustrybiz article announcing end of life production stop it says 75.9m 🤷‍♀️

I love how you all say that there are more games than ever before... Yet completely ignore the fact that the means to play and consume them are only getting more expensive. Forgetting that casuals (being increasingly priced out) have kept this industry from completely falling apart is the definition of dugging your head into the sand, then all of you will be years later acting surprised, wondering what happened and partaking in revisionism... Endless cycle.
