What are the essentials for a game room?

Hey all.

We are looking to buy a house at last and the options are a little limited in terms of having a game room. Some of the places we looked at have "lofts" which are basically bedroom sized open areas at the top of the stairs.

I was thinking it could be a good space for a game room, but at the same time I am worried about the amount of weight bearing I can realistically expect an upstairs floor to handle.

Does anyone have experience of a similar setup or any idea how much stuff I could safely have in such a space? Or how to go about getting that information?

What are the essentials?

CRT?
A cabinet?
Drink Bar?
Mood Lighting?
Ikea shelving?
Commander chairs?
Wood floor?

I'd recommend you decide what kinda game room you want there are tons of different ideas and styles. Is it for video game / palate games and a bar? / decide what style or vibe your going for and we can help better imho

Lighting is going to be a big consideration and sets the tone.

Good sound system as well.

Did not do anything special here. My townhouse happened to have 2 bedrooms upstairs. Made one a gaming room. TV/entertainment center with consoles. Shelfs and games. Computer in corner. Simple

I have a game room in my loft I've been working on the last two years. Our upstairs is just a half one so it's pretty much the whole floor aside from the office space I use as a bedroom. I got a bunch of stuff in there including a massive crt, an arcade replica cab and a ton of board games, and I don't think the floor is having any trouble with it so I imagine you'll be fine.

I'm 26 and successful in other areas of my life except dating. I'm independent, like my job, have my hobbies, have friends, good family relationships, I'm doing well. I like how I look and think I have a lot to offer.

I absolutely suck at dating, and find it all incredibly stressful. Unfortunately I'm no good at the whole aloof/distant/chase thing, either.
That's not to say I scare women off by sending 10 million texts and declaring love, but I just find dating and being in a long-term relationship stressful.

There seems to be an insane pressure for people to be coupled up though...

Technically yes - a C1 48" OLED, with a 360, PS3, Wii U, and N64 in its entertainment center. My PC with a 34" 1440p ultrawide primary monitor on the opposite side.

But I work from home so I mostly game on my Series X or PS5 in the living room.

Currently have my own computer room until it's a childs bedroom in a few years. Just a huge desk with a PC. High quality stereo speakers and reclining sofa seat. It also has a bed where I play with my wife.

I have a sony trinitron and a 4k tv mounted above it in my game room/office. I got all the old consoles (atari 2600, nes, snes, sms, genesis, n64, saturn, DC, ps1,ps2) hooked up to a crt, and newer stuff (ps3,ps4, Series S) hooked up to the 4k tv. I got a futon and my desk all in the same room. Never have time to play them though. I show them off when i have company but that's it. Thinking about just puttiting it all in the garage. I play my PC, Series X, and PS5 in the living room with a bigger tv and my dolby atmos setup.
 
I have no care for a "game room" really. We have a smaller two bedroom house and my girlfriend has an art business + works from home so one of the bedrooms is her office/game room (she's purely PC + SW/Ally). My desk is in the living room alongside my consoles on the main tv.
I'm a minimalist so everything is relatively simple and outside of the few pieces of furniture I own and my tv everything I own could fit in my car. Gaming is really the only space that I own physical stuff (100% digital game wise on anything newer then 7th generation).

I find most "game rooms" extremely gaudy and no chance I would ever be caught with that shit. I like whites and more natural colors and believe in "white space". I've gone through stages where I've introduced a CRT into my setup but it's really just my consoles connected to my LG C2, and a sit/stand desk with only an ITX PC, monitor, and a lamp on it.

Dedicated game room? No, but our basement has TV, Home Theater and a Wyrmwood table for tabletop/board gaming.

We also have a den with retro stuff (CRT, PS2, Dreamcast) but it's also where the Peloton is.

So lots of gaming "space" but none of it is dedicated.
 
I don't personally think they are a healthy thing, assuming you mean computer game room. If board game room for when you have guests then sure.

Otherwise, it's better to play games on your tv in your living room, actually sat on your sofa with your wife and not hiding by yourself in the attic for hours.🤷‍♂️

So your wife can do fuck all but watch you play shit? It's better to have a separate room to game while she can still literally watch anything else on TV.

I think OP is overreaching. Just get a space that you can play games and see what fits. If not a lot of shit fits, in time you will move to a bigger house and there you can once again try to fit turbo nerd shit in there. Maybe think about what is your ideal gaming room and try to draw it, measuring stuff in the process. You got this baby!
 
A significant other that will allow a separate gaming space.
Big screen (More than 60") direct view TV, (No projector systems for me anymore, I got an 82")
At least a 7 speaker (Preferably 9) Atmos surround sound system.
NO WIRES. All wireless. including headphones for late night no disturbing gameplays (Sorry Playstation your bad battery life doesn't belong here)
At least 1.5X the seats as people living in the house. (4 People live in house=6 places to seat)
Mini Fridge always stocked with all kinds of different drinks.
Tables with easy clean surfaces for tabletop sessions. (I've got a gaming table topper that can be removed off the dining room table)
If you have the space, then at least one separate PC/Console station in a corner of the room for local multiplayer. (This used to be a bigger thing in the past but not so much anymore). People always want to play something other than what your currently playing.

Piss drawer, shit bucket, 2nd hand Fleshlight, anime body pillow, energy drinks with full sugar, dirty plates, stiff socks, psychiatric medications pills, dirty keyboard and monitor, but weirdly a super high-def camera.

Seriously though, I use my bedroom as my gaming room. Apart from the desk and pc I only have a fridge with beer and other cold drinks and about 5 electric fans. Perfect for me. Plus with the bed being close I can also turn the monitor arm and use it from the bed. I'm not sure what else I would need. Maybe floor space for VR? I get by using seated mode when I do use it for most games but it rare I use it.
 
The Hue ambient lightstrip with the sync box is next level for subtle improvements to immersion, both in cinema and gaming.

I would also recommend a dedicated system for emulators and peripherals that can't easily be emulated, like: Sinden or other repro light guns that work with emulators, dance mats for Project Outfox/Stepmania, a midi drumkit and USB guitar for Rocksmith clone games, a pair of 8bitdo wireless 360 controllers for PC gaming.

She crochets or reads, and follows along with the story, and we regularly switch over to tv shows. She'd much rather have a game on in the background and actually spend time with me, than spend that time sat alone watching a show. 🤷‍♂️

It's called having a healthy relationship where you spend time together.
 
Our game room is our rec room. It's a huge 25'x30' room off to the side of the living room (living room is 1/3 that size). There is a step down, and it has its own fire place, huge windows on the one on the front facing wall, overlooking the river (live on a river cliffside) with curtains.

In the room we have shelving on the other 2 walls with 8ft high bookcases filled with board games. At least 400 board and card games. A Foosball table, laptop, another 3 section shelving unit with at least 1000+ movies and ps2 games. A rotating rack with ps3, ps4/5, Xbox 360, and switch games.

A 60" TV unit with the following consoles:
Switch, ps3, ps5, series x, Genesis mini, steam link, snes mini, ps1 classic, ps2, wii, and tg16 mini

4 swivel chairs, a game table between them. A large wooden connect 4, dart board, a large guitar Amp, rack of 4 electric guitars and 2 more on stands.

Yes this is what a couple who loves games does when you don't have kids in your house.

Having a dedicated game room is so great. My office also has more games, portables ans a few more guitars.
