finally downloaded Joy Division's albums since I enjoy Interpol's first album so much
[note, the only reason I don't purchase albums is because I don't want to have to ship them back from Toronto to Vancouver]

Trail of Dead's first one to see what the hoopla is all about. they're good.

I have a tendency to overrate things, and I probably do that with them. But for my money, they're everything I could ever want in music and more. Their live show is just fucking incredible -- way beyond anything they put out on their albums. I could see why someone wouldn't like Phantom Power, but their old material is definitely worth checking out. A US vinyl distributor acquired the rights to release SFA's backcatalog on vinyl, and they're starting with the Phantom Power remix album.

All I can say is that if you haven't heard Guerilla, you're missing out on one of the greatest albums of the '90s. It was incredible.

I wish I could like, put my love for it into words, but I can't. Hey, Pitchfork gave it a 9.5!

And like, contrary to what my posts look like, guys, I'm not a braindead fanboy or anything. I just get really obsessed with things for a while, and then I cool down. I've loved this band for years now, but every once in a while, I just go crazy and start talking about them incessantly. In all honesty, I'm just really excited that they're coming out with a new album.

Well. . .their first one isn't their best. I don't listen to it that much. It's all about Source Tags and Codes and Madonna, although that first album has the orgiastic Richter Scale Madness. You could definitely see the band's talent on that first record, but the budget of the production holds it back. They're much more forward-thinking than the very hardcore s/t album lets on.

Also, as far as JD goes, don't expect to be wowed by the music. JD is all about the lyrics and the atmosphere. They also might take a little work to get into, but trust me, it's worth the work. And don't go listening to them if you don't want to spiral into a sort of existential depression. Everyone that gets 'em goes through that when their JD-cherry is popped.

about Joy Division: Right. Musically, it seems stale compared to what we have today, but there must be a reason why people are so into it. I can certainly hear the passion in Curtis' singing... so it must be one of those cases where I need to spend some time with it.

I hope I don't get depressed tho. Music tends to affect me that way.
 
If I'm in the mood, Joy Division is great. I bought the Heart + Soul boxset, but still haven't listened to all of it, as I get about a disc and a half in and want to slit my wrists. I'd rather listen to Xiu Xiu, but JD is fantastic.

I really need to pick up the Velvet Underground box, and some more Jesus + Mary Chain records before the year is out. It was my goal to listen to more music that's not from the 90s or later this year, I kind of failed. But I do love VU & J+MC.

They do interesting things musically on occasion (Atrocity Exhibition, She's Lost Control, Decades, New Dawn Fades. . .) but they literally did not know how to play their instruments. The guitarist and the bass player traded instruments early in the band's life, which explains why certain songs feature a bass that's being played like a guitar. Some of that stuff even carried into New Order. All the lyrics are gold, though. Ian Curtis, as far as I'm concerned, has been unmatched lyrically. 24 Hours crushes me everytime I hear it. The lyrics to Atrocity Exhibition, well, remind me of Jamie Stewart.

And do listen to ToD's Madonna. Some people like it more than Source Tags. It's difficult to resist songs like Claire de Lune, Mistakes and Regrets, and Mark David Chapman. As far as lyrical embarassments go, this album is the least weighed down by them.

And Lambtron, I still have to continue my Bowie Appreciation class with you.

Today, it's mostly been a mix of Ladytron (Light and Magic - while working out), Lovage (Music to Make Love to Your Old Lady By), and Cibo Matto (Stereo Type A).

This album, I swear, it really sucks the first few listens. But GOD DAMN if "Fags and Failure" and "Jamie Thomas" aren't catchy. Coxon's high point is on Kiss of Morning, though.

yeah ive been listening to this too far a while im really digging it its a well rounded album with a nice original sound.

this is an amazing album and more people need to listen to his music. Frusciante's new album shadows collide with people is absolutly genious it has alot of pink flloyd influences and is truly a master piece

After listening to Internal Wrangler, Go straight to Winchester Cathedral, theire new album, Walking With Thee is pretty forgettable. Great band overall, even if they dont seem like theyre pushing themselves much unfortunately, one of the reasons Winchester Cathedral fell short after initial listenings. But like I said, listen to it regardless :)

I've only listened once so far, but I like it a lot. I won't say it's better than B, PI, B, but it's awesome. "Trash Flavored Trash" kicks my ass, and "Love Rhymes With Hideous Car Wreck" is about the best song title ever.
 
crimes is more accessible, but i think piano island is lyrically and musically more dense. that said, crimes is more awesome.
 
I WOULD be listening to my Jill Scott CD if it ever Frickin got here!!!

I walked into a local record shop and heard a frentic drum and bass meets dub meets spastic editing remix of Harry Belafonte's "Banana Boat Song" and demanded they sell it to me on the spot. Brilliant, in a particularly mind-destroying sort of way.

What do you think of the Big Ben track? As it's got quite a few cliche samples of old UK stuff, I wonder if it has quite the same appeal as it does for me.

Also, you'd probably enjoy the Big Ben's Big Breakdown a bit more.
 
Anyone else incredibly disappointed in the new Faint album?

It just feels so generic, and is definetly lacking any memorable melodies. Not one song worth mentioning really. Bah.

This is my 2nd week trying to get a copy of Arcade Fire. The indie chic at Reckless told me they're sold out, and that they usually go thru 3 major distributors who are all out at the moment. I put that puppy on special order though, so i'll be seeing that in a few weeks.

RedDwarf- You sir, have a delicious taste in music.

As for ToD, i'd recommend getting their albums chronologically. But if you can only afford 1 "starter", then by all means go for Madonna.
