And I hope to check out the new Tori Amos, A Frames, and Magnolia Electric Co. this weekend.
I'd love to hear the new Magnolia Electric Co., the new tracks on the live album are great and I'm having a really tough time holding off a few more months for the album.

My new favorite record for today.

Electrelane - The Power Out

I really only picked it up for the awesome "This Deed", but much to my surprise, there's only a few sub-par tracks in the whole thing! Strong album.

So weird to find out that Albini produced this. You don't hear Albini AT ALL.

So I gotta ask -- is it any good? We were having quite the thread about Thievery Corporation the other day...

It's not bad =/

Haven't listened to it straight through, so I don't have much of an impression yet. I like what I've heard so far though, but I like almost anything Thievery. My biggest complaint is that out of an album of 16 songs, we only get 3 songs that don't feature someone.

Gonna take a small road trip tomorrow, so I'll be able to listen to it in full.

I listen to songs, no album/cd's, so I'll just list the ones at the top of my playlist (keeping in mind not all of my current favorite songs are brand new):

Interpol - Evil
Weezer - Hash Pipe
Queens of the Stone Age - Little Sister
Von Bondies - C'mon C'mon
Yeah Yeah Yeah's - Y Control
Chevelle - Vitamin R
AeroSmith - Sing for the Moment
The Shins - Young Pilgrims
Beck - Devil's Haircut
Motley Crue - Kickstart My Heart
Rage Against the Machine - Guerilla Radio
Pilate - Don't Waste Your Breath
Stone Temple Pilots - Dancing Days

Right now:

Califone - Heron King Blues

Other CDs that are getting heavy play:

The Mountain Goats - All Hail West Texas (actually, all my Mountain Goats stuff is getting a lot of play lately....)
Devendra Banhart - Rejoicing in the Hands
The Velvet Underground - Loaded (Fully Loaded)
Liars - They Were Wrong, So We Drowned

Valende by Jennifer Gentle is fucking awesome. I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere on here, but it's wild and rad, holy fuck.

I guess I'll hop on the LCD Soundsystem bandwagon, I'll give it a listen and see what I think.

Still no new A-Frames!!!!! :(

Great album. Flawless drumming.

Hello all, it's good to be back. :) I have missed these threads.

I heard an interview with Jimmy Chamberlin the other morning. He sounds completely different from the old Jimmy. He used to always have this "whoa dude" stoner inflection to his voice. And now he sounds a lot younger and a LOT healthier. I know that's a weird thing to pick up from his voice, but it was such a drastic difference that I was completely taken aback.

And welcome back, Diablos.

Thanks Mifune.

Yeah, Jimmy has really cleaned himself up in the past five years. Did you hear the interview on Sound Opinions?

Some guy from the blamonet interviewed Jimmy... he has his own show on an independent radio station. Lots of info from Jimmy. You can tell he's willing to give more info to his fans than a commerical radio station, which I think is pretty cool. He almost confirms a SP reunion, too.

You can download the interview here

You need a plugin for WMP which you can get at http://esupport.sony.com/perl/swu-download.pl?upd_id=1395&PASSVAL2=SMB

For all the love Sideways is getting, I'm surprised the soundtrack isn't getting more attention; it's absolutely excellent. And I'm quite liking Lemon Jelly for the record -- I nabbed this on an impulse at the CD store when I couldn't find the Thievery album I was looking for, since it was $10.

Jimmy Chamberlin's CD is absolutely fantastic as well. I got my signed copy last week or so, and it smashed into me after about 4 run throughs. Cranes of Prey, Loki Cat, Streetcrawler....I love you. Now release a cut of Sloth, please.

I like the cover art from the first album you have in your post, Macam.
PSA is bliss. Yes, Sloth is an awesome song, I don't know why it wasn't put on the album. And how about that drumming on the enhanced CD? Holy shit, I can't believe how tight (and FAST) it is in the second take of Streetcrawler. Truly one of a kind. If Corgan's album is better than Jimmy's, I'll be surprised.

WTF is up with the Mannequin Caretaker? :lol :lol Running out in the middle of the street and everything... :lol

Wow.

PM me if you want anything, I have a lot. Way too much. So much that I should just probably move it from my external hard drive to a bunch of DVD-R's and hide it away somewhere.

I've been in a mellower than normal mood lately (and I'm pretty mellow usually) so I've been listening mostly to The Bank Holidays. A bit poppier than, say, The Clientele and not quite as twee as Belle & Sebastian. Not sure if they're cool or not though, I can't keep up with what kids today listen to. ;)

Continuing my long tradition of really REALLY getting into an album years after release, I'm totally obsessed with The Wrens "Meadowland". Sure sure, it's a demonstrably brilliant album that most everyone heralded when it was released and I liked it fine back then, but suddenly a few months ago I started listening to it more and more often.

Yeah, the ECD stuff is absolutely insane. Jimmy looks like he's reached Enlightenment while doing it too, despite the fact that his wrists look like rubber. I initially wasn't sold on the vocals on some of the tracks, but they've grown on me, although I agree with with Rolling Stone's review in that the vocals on For the Children does sound a bit "incongruous" still. That said, it's the instruments that do the real singing on that album and I sincerely hope it picks up traction with more people. It's definitely my favorite album out of the splintered group, although I still do enjoy Iha and Auf de Maur's solo albums.

I'm unsure how BC's album will come out, as I've heard mixed things on precisely what it's supposed to cover or sound like, but considering that he has a real knack for hammering out some fantastic melodies and has really mastered his songwriting gifts these last few years, I'm eager for it to hit already, let alone to see him or Jimmy perform again. Jimmy and Billy's new albums both hit this year, alongside Ben Folds' slew of CDs....funny how that always happens, just like the rock implosion in 2000.

Everyone needs this epiphany. It's so good. Their entire catalog is so good. They're so good live. HAVE MY BABIES, CHARLES.

Doves - Some Cities - Reminds me of Lost Souls moreso than The Last Broadcast. It's definitely more rockin'. I like it but it'll need to grow on me as a whole.
Radiohead - Kid A - Classic. I love listening to this album every few months.

Various mp3s and random albums after that.

Iha's solo album was pretty good, though a bit too corny and, even worse, country for me at times. I never really liked MADM's album, but that's just me. There are a couple enjoyable songs on it. I love her voice. The vocal tracks on Life Begins Again are clearly intended to be more on the poppy side. It's the instrumentals where he really shines as a true jazz/prog artist.

BC's solo album is prolly gonna be more like Adore, but not as gloomy. Something tells me it won't be happy-go-lucky like Zwan was most of the time. I read a post by a girl who played violin on the album, and described the recording/mixing process as being very organic - in that you hear the instrument more like you would if someone was sitting in front of you, playing it - not super polished and unnatural production that most instruments get in the recording studio these days. The album should be really good if it's produced that way, for sure.

Lemon Jelly and the Wrens are both hot choices.

I didn't even realize a new Doves album was out. I liked The Last Broadcast much more than Lost Souls, so I think I'll wait a while before checking out the new one. :|

SomaFM is playing Iron and Wine's cover of "Such Great Heights" by The Postal Service. I don't like it. I gotta listen to the original now.

Maybe I was a little hasty when comparing it more to Lost Souls. The more I listen to it, the more it sounds like a fusion/natural progression of the last two albums. There are some really good tracks on it. There are some pretty sweet guitar hooks on it too.

At the moment, an extremely rare LP set by Germaine Thyssens-Valentin of the complete piano works of Gabriel Faure (edit: from the library). Some of it has been reissued on Testament CDs, and I've got one, but the LPs are a whole different ballgame, much more natural.

Telefon Tel Aviv - Fahrenheit Fair Enough
Ted Leo and the Pharmacists - Hearts of Oak, Shake the Sheets
The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower - Love in the Fascist Brothel (I have no idea why I'm listening to this, but I am.)
Prefuse 73 - One Word Extinguisher
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze (This is really strong; I like it a lot)
British Sea Power - Open Water (right now this is THE album of 2005)

No one's in the other music thread, so I'll repost my post from there:

I LIKES MUSIC. HERE'S WHAT I'M LISTENING TO:

Queens of the Stone Age - Songs for the Deaf
The Plot to Blow Up the Eiffel Tower - Love in the Facist Brothel
Tori Amos - The Beekeeper
Bright Eyes - Fevers and Mirrors and everything else, basically...
Xiu Xiu - Knife Play
Hot Snakes - Audit in Progress
LCD Soundsystem - LCD Soundsystem
Sunn O))) - Flight of the Behemoth
Of Montreal - The Sunlandic Twins

And just because it's so good, and everyone needs to listen to it, I'm going to actually discuss why you should listen to this next record:

Jennifer Gentle - Valende

Woah holy shit. I was told "Listen to this, Zack, you will love it." And, oh, love it I do. Jennifer Gentle is a psychedelic folk/pop/anything else band from Italy. This is their third record, and it was recently released on Sub Pop, so it shouldn't be all that hard to find. The album is a cacaphony of sounds, noises, great hooks, recorders (!!!) and all around awesomeness. The first couple tracks are super fun whimsy pop tracks, and then from there it just kind of grows. It gets way more dense and big and less reliant on verse-chorus-verse songwriting. Listening to the middle stretch of tracks reminded me a lot of the Books. The end of the album is just killer, the last minute of the last track made me sit there slack jawed. Seriously, dudes. Most of you don't buy records anyway, listen to it at the very least. It's like $12, go buy it. Or better yet, they're touring the US (with Dead Meadow) in the near future-- go see them live.

Here's a sample track: http://www.subpop.com/scripts/main/download.php?url=/downloads/free/I_Do_Dream_You288.mp3&mid=288

It's one of my favorite tracks, but it doesn't tell the whole story. Listen to it, crave more, and check out the record.

It definitely gets my stamp of approval.
