You can't find the interview because Pitchfork doesn't have their pre-2005 features online anymore.

This happened when Jamie was visiting Vietnam. And the lad didn't cruise Stewart. . .he was a prostitute. Jamie picked him up because he looked like he needed the money, and that he was very sad looking naked because there were scars all over his body. Jamie had him pose with the plastic baby (which he had brought with him for the sole purpose of taking amusing photos).
oh man. that's fucking heart breaking

Thanks for the link, EBW!

Why is it that I bust out all sorts of fucking noisy music in the summer?

I dug out The Stone Roses' Second Coming, and decided that John Squire's guitar wankery isn't that bad after all.

I respect Jamie Stewart's willingness to provoke the listener. I get the whole "statement" thing, and I'm down. But I can't get past the hysterical fucking moaning and yelping and precious carrying-on to let it sink in. If he's got a message, what's the point of burying it in such eardrum-piercing garbage?

He may be a worthy artist, but he's a shitty fucking musician.

I loooove Xiu Xiu for the compositions. They're so perfect and "fit" everything oh so well. Yeah, they're noisy and abrasive (and really, Fabulous Muscles was really subdued compared to the stuff before it), but it all works, and it's all necessary, I think. There's been a lot of growth on each of their albums, and they're pretty easily one of my favorite bands around. I think that Jamie is petty much an awesome musician, and I love the way he takes it over the top. But noise is pretty much super polarizing.

You should check out Fag Patrol if you haven't before labelling Jamie a "shitty fucking musician," though.

I think you'd like the De Novo Dahl album, Lambtron. First disc is great summery material, and the reworkings on the second disc are fucking bonkers.

Well if it's got the Hotarubi Seal of Approval, consider my interest piqued.

again, speechless. jamie's really a pretty bright guy, but he has the same kind of gonzo attitude that this artist-y friend of mine does. one the one hand he really did make a pretty incredible statement with that album and the cover, but can the end really justify the means?

Wait until his book comes out. He was doing readings from it when I saw them play (acoustic!) in a record store last year. There were all sorts of acts of depravity.

Thanks to a screwup at Target, i.e. them putting it out early, I'm listening to the new Coldplay. It's amazing, unbelievable, and whatever other superlatives you care to use.

Super Furry Animals - Outspaced
David Byrne - Grown Backwards

Both great.

What other David Byrne solo stuff do I need?

What is this? It's electronic I'm certain, but as I'm not familiar with the series or artist, I'm curious where this falls.

Come on -jinx- and co., spill the beans on whatcha listening to! I need a new CD this week:)

It's cool, but there aren't many vocals aside from maybe two songs. I'm trying to remember the name - it has something to do with temptation.

I don't think The Catherine Wheel has anything to do with Eno. Byrne recorded it while he was still with Talking Heads, and I believe it was the soundtrack for a play. There aren't many vocals on there either, but it's really awesome. When you get into the solo albums he started making around '89, he's intoxicated with the world music thing. I personally like his solo work, but I know a lot of hardcore Talking Heads fans don't like it much.

Basically, if you like the last Talking Heads album, Naked, you'll like a lot of his solo albums. I love Rei Momo, which is like completely influenced by Latin American music, and Look Into the Eyeball, which is more experimental.

The thing he did with Eno is My Life in the Bush of Ghosts, which is ambient. I recommend that as well.

hehe i'm trolling a music thread because i feel threatened by diverse taste
eh.. actually I can see what he is saying. stuff like umm.. I don't know.. umm 50 Cent I guess.. sells like 4 million copies, yet no one in this thread listens to it. unfortunately I am way out of touch with new music (I mean I'm listening to Genesis for fucks sake) so I don't have any better examples, but he does have a point. it's almost like some people ARE trying to be as absolutely eclectic as possible.

just my two cents but at the end of the day it really doesn't matter.

You know what, borghe, you wouldn't believe this - but - I'm listening to Genesis. I swear to God.

A Trick of the Tail to be more precise.

Anyway, what's he care? I listen to what I enjoy, and I'm sure that's the case with everyone else in the thread.

you could check out some of the stuff i listed on the first page, specially federico aubele's album (produced by the thievery corp) and blue skied and clear, a 2d compilation by artists under morr music. the first cd is a tribute to slowdive, while the second contains new tracks by the same artists. tosca is a duo, which contains one half of kruder and dorfmeister, namely dorfmeister. rachid taha's new album is fantastic too, but that's if you are into middle eastern rock/algerian rai music.

Gran Hotel Buenos Aires by Federico Aubele is wonderful stuff. If you like the Eighteenth Street Lounge sound, then it will be perfect for you. I haven't heard all of the J.A.C. album from Tosca yet, but I enjoyed their last album (Delhi 9) a lot.

As for top-secret suggestions, I think the new album from As One & Kirk Degiorgio, Elegant Systems, is really, really good.
