"A Favor" is quite good, not really as incredible as I'd been led to believe though. The rest is nice if not up the level of Golden Dreams.

I would've paid full price for this even without the singles disc; together they become an unstoppable force.

And far from being recently released, I'm rediscovering DJ Shadow's Endtroducing after buring a copy for a friend who'd never heard it before.

Dead

well not really...yet
Randomly picked a CD to listen to. Listening to Swervedriver's Mezcal Head right now.

Love the fucking outro

I want a good catchy alt rock almost grunge record to listen to. Something released in the last year. Nirvana box set doesn't count.

Right now? Magnolia Electric Company - What Comes After the Blues

Been waiting for this for a while, heh.

So far, nothing as staggeringly awesome as Farewell Transmission, but the album is great. The band sounds great. I want to see these guys live so very badly.

goddamit, Griese!
hmm...haven't listened to much new music.
goddamn Three Days Grace has been in my head for the longest time. "YOU KNOW I COULD BE JUST LIKE YOU!"

The new Thievery Corporation and Kings of Leon cds. Both are excellent.
what's your favorite track so far? i'm really digging "amerimacka", with "the heart's a lonely hunter" coming in at close second.

i'm mostly listening to a lot of mid to late 90's downtempo/trip-hop (mono, goldfrapp, hooverphonic) and old school reggae (aswad, burning spear).

but i'll list the recent releases that i'm enjoying as well.
the fiery furnaces - EP

not relesad in the past few years (1997), but this is what you need, unless of course, you already have it:
the tea party - transmission.

Beck - Midnite Vultures: The lesser Beck album. It starts off smashingly but to echo the AMG review, Hollywood Freaks makes a fool out of the listener. I'm not exactly sure if Beck is serious with all the fun, especially when he uses the lyrics of Mixed Bizness in that track. There are also a few underwhelming cuts such as 'Pressure Zone', 'Peaches and Cream'.. I'd give it a 7.

I've only had the album for two days, and I'm a huge Beck fanatic. Mellow Gold and Odelay took up three years of my life. Sea Change, and Mutations, I've owned for some time now, they're not in the league as the first two Beck classics, but they're both also great.

Seriously, that 2000 album is the most 'recent' music I've been listening to...

I wish I was a pir8te so that I could listen to Spoon, British Sea Power and Beck's new records, but I'll have to settle for my "oldies" for now...

For now I'm listening on Doves new album called Some Cities on NME.com

Stars - Set Yourself on Fire

When there's nothing left to burn, you have to set yourself on fire.

Really incredible, hard-hitting melodic pop - this is the band Death Cab for Cutie wishes it was (but isn't).

God, that was strange to see you again
Introduced by a friend-of-a-friend
Smiled and said, "Yes, I think we've met before"
In that instant it started to pour

Captured a taxi despite all the rain
We drove in silence across Pont Champlain
And all of the time you thought I was sad
I was trying to remember your name

There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave
You were what I wanted, I gave what I gave
I'm not sorry I met you
I'm not sorry it's over
I'm not sorry there's nothing to say
I'm not sorry there's nothing to save

Also working on a mix CD of mine.

Aha Shake Heartbreak is indeed good, and the Kings are going on tour again here soon. Awesome live band. But if you don't already have it, get Youth and Young Manhood. It's better.

And nitewulf: probably Ambicion Eterna or Sol Tapado.

A very very very very overrated indie rock band.

Fuck. Ass. Now I'm agreeing with Diablos on music. I heard "Aeroplane over the Sea" for the first time a couple weeks ago, and I despise about half the songs on it, I'd only consider two "good".

As for what I am listening to, I'm trying not to listen to Picaresque because I want to buy it when it is released, but the whole avoiding it plan isn't working out for me.

I know I'm gonna come off like a prick here, but how about you listen to it a few fucking more times before you judge it. If there was ever an album thats genius and beauty grew on you after repeated listens, it's 'In the Aeroplane Over the Sea'.

I jumped off the indie music tilt-a-whirl for a bit and have decided to find the happiest pop-rock I can and sit a while and snap my fingers and bob my head to the beat.

In other words, I'm mainly listening to The Bank Holidays. Their EP "Good Looks to Camera" is the only release I can find at all, but two of their best songs are available for download on their website so there's definitely a convenience factor there. As an added bonus my wife hates 'em and complains of sugary-sweet pop overdose every time I play it.

Not all that new, but picking some of the more recently added:

Prefuse 73 (eh), Decemberists (good, but overrated), M83 (great), Manual and Syntaks (fucking awesome), Ambulance LTD (good), Junior Boys (great), I am Robot and Proud, etc. etc.

I listened to it about a half dozen times, and in those times I got sicker and sicker of the songs.

I'm familiar with albums growing on me, but I've never heard an album that I've absolutely hated that became at all listenable. If an album just doesn't seem like something I enjoy, or if it doesn't click with me, I do give it time.

I like music similar to the album, I just find this particular album to be absolutely horrible.

What in particular do you hate about it so much? Because the way you talk, it just sounds like the "inevitable indie backlash."

I didn't think the album was anything special for a little while, but one day it clicked and I became obsessed, listening to it for hours on end and tracking down every scrap of music Jeff Mangum ever recorded. As far as I'm concerned, Aeroplane is the most perfect synthesis of imagery, melody, and gut-wrenching passion that rock music has seen in a very long time.

And I know that it has become hip to hate on it, but I will never understand why.

A year and a half after buying and first listening to Lemon of Pink, I fell in love with it. This one is even better. It's like discovering music for the first time all over again.

I've had the album since like 2001. It would've grown on me by now. Like Archaix said... there's only a couple good songs on it (Holland, 1945 is great). In the Aeroplane Over the Sea just comes off as being a failed concept album with a lack of depth in music, lyrics and overall execution to me. I don't understand how some of you indie kids go crazy over this album, but hey - to each his own.

And I know that it has become hip to hate on it, but I will never understand why.

One of the things I hate is that he uses his voice too much. The first two tracks are evidence of this (The second being one of the worst songs I have ever heard. Ever. I neither know nor care whether it is supposed to be sarcastic, or ironic, or genuine, or what, but it's miserable. It's somebody who can't sing well yelling over and over with the apparent intent of pissing me off. And he succeeds). Without these first two tracks, the album would likely go from "Good lord, set that ablaze" to "Eh, it's not bad." I don't have a problem with singers who don't have the best voice, provided that they know what their limits are. If your voice is the weakest point of the band, then shut the hell up every now and again :p

And since I'm on the way down that road, I'll just do this track-by-track.

The title track is one of the songs that I find decent, and could grow on me if I really let it.

Two-Headed Boy is the kind of thing I'd expect from an album everybody loves so much. I think this song is great. Holland 1945, also good.

Ghost and Oh, Comely are just...weird. There's just something about each of them that puts me off. They show some of the problems that the first two tracks have, but also have pretty good songwriting and music going in their favor. And then there are parts where it sounds like the band just got bored and decided to dick around with the sounds they could make. Oh, Comely eventually falls into the trap of being a long song that turns into a chore to listen to. I actually get a headache by the time the song is over. Don't know what that's all about.

And finishing off the album is Two-Headed boy Part 2, which reminds me of the kind of song you might hear at a drunken acoustic open mic night.

Overall, the album is just so up-and-down that I can't stand it. I tend to be harsher on albums that have a few very good tracks and then a few horrible songs than on albums that are simply mediocre all around. That's probably why I hate this album. That, and I've heard nothing but absolutely excellent things about it. Coming into it with no expectations, or just hearing about half of the songs might have greatly changed my opinion.

The new Dark Tranquillity. Just maybe the best Melodic Deathmetal release in the past 10 years, from the only band that is still relevant to the genre.
