Just a single, but it is indeed awesome, quite Futureheadsish, looking forward to the album!

How isn't there more Kings of Convenience/Erlend Oye love on these forums, btw???
check more often ;)
i love both KoC albums, plus "versus", the remixed version of "quiet is the new loud" and erlend's "dj kicks" compilation. "unrest" isnt as good as the rest however, IMO.

Lisa Edelstein's dad touched my private parts. True fact.
haha, I definitely don't spend as much time here as I used to...I'm actually a pretty big fan of Unrest, but DJ Kicks is awesome. Honestly, you don't even know the hold over my summer Drop and If I Ever Feel Better took. As per the KOC stuff, it's just all great. Can't complain about a thing.

I'm totally in love with Figurine, Erlend, Nitrada, some Capitol K, Styrofoam, The Go Find, Junior Boys, Notwist, Lali Puna, Broadcast. If you haven't heard the Go Find, try them out now.

Anyone heard 13+ God? That new Notwist project?

I tend to like anything with musical integrity, a little pop-idm-electronica, a nice hook and some quirky vocalist is great, so suggestions are welcome. :)

I'm agreeing with pretty much all of what Mario_Hugo is saying. M83 is fucking awesome. I was listening to M83 for most of last week. My friend introduced me to Kings of Convienience about two weeks ago, I'm still not completely sold on them but I like what I've heard so far.

I've been listening to Fresh, Pendulum and TeeBee this week.

Sage Francis - A Healthy Distrust
Daft Punk - Human After All
Diplo - Florida
Four Tet - Dialogue
The Chemical Brothers - Push The Button
The Postal Service - Give Up

I am now listening to Gravenhurst - Flashlight Sessions. Very good folk stuff; sort of like Adem. Probably a bit more interesting than Adem, actually. You know, actually, looking at the Kings of Conveniences recommendations further up, you guys would probably like Gravenhurst.

the pAper chAse meet redworms'farm split
The Books - Lost & Safe (pretty rad, I'll have to dig out the first two records again...)
Aesop Rock - Fast Cars, Danger, Fire, and Knives EP (better than Bazooka Tooth by far, it's REALLY fucking hot...)
Jennifer Gentle - Valende
British Sea Power - Open Season
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze
Pretty much every Bright Eyes record...

That new M. Ward disc is fucking lovely. I hope he plays some place I can tour.

I've got a huge list of new shit to listen to tomorrow. I'd listen tonight but I'm sick:

Hella - Church Gone Wild/Chirpin' Hard
A-Frames - Black Forest
Matt Sweeney/Bonnie "Prince" Billy - Superwolf
Magnolia Electric Co. - What Comes After the Blues

Should be a fun day.

The Books record is out? Or is it only leaked?
The Lemon of Pink has become my favorite after-work wind-down record... so I really want to hear this one.

Mifune - Believe me, I'm not jumping on a friggin' bandwagon. I honestly do not like the album. And when it comes to this album, I'm almost positive the bandwagon for the people that like it is much larger. For whatever reason, In the Aeroplane Over the Sea is an indie rock dork's wet dream. Because of this, I find it next to impossible to one day completely listen to nothing BUT indie like so many of you do. I mean, if that's your holy grail... WTF? There have been a lot better indie releases since 1998, IMO.

Wow, I feel sorry for the folks who don't like In the Aeroplane Over the Sea. Your loss...

A brief defense of it: It's more about the emotion that resonates throughout the album, in the lyrics, the music, and yes, Mangum's voice. Reading the lyrics by themselves is almost overwhelmingly depressing, but the music itself is fun, and uplifting, and Mangum's voice eventually moves from grating to endearing, if you'll let it. :)

As for recent stuff, I'm listening to mostly Guero by Beck. Don't have the patience to post album art, sorry. :p I haven't heard all of it though, but I like what I hear. Especially the closing track. Fantastic.

Dead

well not really...yet
Yeah the last Manics album is pretty damn good, especially compared to Know Your Enemy, which wasnt really anything to write home about. Its kinda new order-ish in some spots I thought....

How often do I have to post this before people start listening to it?
it's a great album :)

mario hugo, i love lali puna, junior boys, erlend and styrofoam from your list. so i'll check out "the go find".
i'd recommend
alpinestars - white noise
dzihan and kamien - gran riserva
bent - ariels
royksopp - melody AM
stereolab - emperor tomato ketchup
those are mostly downtempo, electropop there...also highly recommended is
the organ - grab that gun (jinx, i think you'll like this as well).

It's good to finally see people listening to the Books!

I've heard of the Go Find, but never listened to them. Judging by Mario's list, I think I'll like them. I've been listening to Lali Puna, Figurine, Junior Boys, and the Notwist plenty. Byul is kinda like Figurine with less melody, for those interested. They're Korean, so it might be hard to find anything. Tujiko Noriko is also really great and styled similarly. She's on the same label as the Books and the only stuff I know of has been released in America, so it should be pretty easy to find some of her stuff.

Oh and you Books folks should check out Shugo Tokumaru if you haven't.

I'll start listening to it when their fuckin' label releases it in North America.

Glad to hear it's good, though. Know Your Enemy was one of those albums that makes me question why I liked a band in the first place.

Archaix - Fair enough.
Diablos - I'm not sure I can make sense of anything you said. You seem to be making four different points, none of which are very clear. I listen to what I like. I have never made a conscious decision to listen to strictly "indie" music. It just happens that the independent scene has a lot more innovative artists in every genre of music than the mainstream. However, simply labeling something indie or not is pretty damned asinine. It's all just music.

mario: the 13+god is hit-or-miss. the tracks with mainly notwist vocals are great...because it sounds just like a notwist album. the rap parts take a bit getting used to.

currently listening TOO:

duo505 - late - for all you morr music fans, this is like ratatat done morr-style. awesome midi-beats with a pop brightness about them.

jeff hanson - son and his new album - oh man, elliott, we sure do miss you. but this is honestly a quite good imitation. in fact, almost makes me forget the sadness of elliott's absence at times...

new order - waiting for the sirens' call - still hasn't hit me quite as hard as Get Ready, but there's some good singles on here. Krafty rocks!

of montreal - sunlandic twins - no description necessary. ROCKS!

spoon - gimme fiction and robbers on high street - tree city - i think britt daniel wanted to double the income this year by releasing two albums, one under a different name. if gimme fiction was so damn good, tree city would be my spoon album of the year.

wilco - live at the fillmore - awesome.

the books - lost and safe - meh so far...i think lemon of pink spoiled me...

The fascination on whether an album is "indie" or not is so ridiculous. I don't like a record better if it doesn't come out on a major, or something (PROTIP: Most "indie" labels are distributed by a major). I like a record based on the quality of the music contained on it. The Raveonettes are on Columbia. I'm sure their new album will be in my top 5 at the end of the year. Ween is on Sanctuary. I think you're all well aware of how I feel about Ween... Find what kind of music excites you and dig deeper into that style/sound/scene/label, whatever. That's what I did, and I'm really glad I did. There's a huge world of music out there. Listen to whatever you can, and find what you like.

That being said, anyone who hate Neutral Milk Hotel is absolutely bonkers! :p I feel that In The Aeroplane Over the Sea is a tad bit overrated, but then again, I think that pretty much every record is under or overrated, for the most part. It's a truly beautiful record. I think the last third of the record (after the crushing "Oh, Comely") loses a bit of steam, but it's overall fantastic. The first 6 tracks just absolutely kill. And Mangum's voice is AWESOME. It's certainly not my holy grail, but it's a wonderful record. And really ahead of it's time, I think. Mangum needs to put down the beer, stop wandering around, and write another NMH record.

GG Duo: Did you ever get into Devendra Banhart and/or Vetiver? If you're really digging I&W you most definitely should, like, right now. And I'd just like to add that the forthcoming Calexico/Iron & Wine EP has me more excited than I should probably share on the forum here. Ohhhhhhh god that's a sexy prospect.

And for all of you Magnolia Electric Co. fans, here's a bunch of free live shows. They're basically playing everywhere in the whole world in the next 6 months, if you have a chance, you should go see them. They're devastating live, Molina is a really nice guy, and you should give him all of your money. I don't think I can see any shows this tour. :( I have to pick between Molina or Raveonettes... and I've already seen him this year. Fuck.

I've heard Rejoicing in the Hands... and although I like his songs, I do not enjoy his singing. I'm the same way about Joanna Newsom. I just don't think I'm ready for freak-folk yet.

By the way, thank you for all your recommendations. It might take me a while to pick those up - but i appreciate your posts.

Then I think that Vetiver would be right up your alley! The vox aren't nearly as crazy as Joanna or Devendra, and I feel that the record is better than The Milk-Eyed Mender and pretty much on par with Rejoicing in the Hands. It's a different feel-- more quiet and reserved, but it's sooooo good. And really, criminally underrated. All the nuts those people bust over Joanna last year should've been saved for the Vetiver record, which has lasted way, way longer for me, at least.

http://www.vetiverse.com/vetiver.html

You can get some samples there, I really think you'd love it.

You're welcome for all the recomendations. I know I recommend a lot at a time, but it's just easier that way, when my mind is thinking along those lines! I'm glad you enjoy it, at least. :>

Not all recently released but yeah...

Jim Guthrie - Now, More Than Ever
I love this album. Really beautiful, folky, personal, and just great.

British Sea Power - Open Season
Great guitar driven rock. Love it. Definitely more consistent than their debut.

Doves - Some Cities
It's growing on me. Feeling more like a natural progression from The Last Broadcast, although I wish it had more standout tracks like Satellities and Caught By The River from The Last Broadcast. Still nice.

Owls - Owls
Some pretty weird, but often beautiful indie rock. Love the obscure guitar work. Makes me want to sing along. May we all make it home safely...

Pfft, suit yourself. This album is a mellow, surreal, textured adventure. I love it. It's better than Last Broadcast, IMO because this seems to set them apart from other bands. Whereas their last release was more radio-friendly IMO. Probably one of my faves this year.

I'm not saying I don't like it. I totally do. I just need to invest some more time into it. It's hard to give it a fair shot when there are so many other excellent bands, artists, and albums to listen to alongside it.

I know Alu. I'm just sayin' it's a good album.

Anyway I'm listening to:

Doves - Some Cities
Mars Volta - Frances the Mute
Jimmy Chamberlin Complex - Life Begins Again
Stereophonics - Language/Sex/Violence/Other
Queens of the Stone Age - Lullabies to Paralyze

Old stuff:

Foo Fighters - self-titled first album (classic!)
Pearl Jam - Rearviewmirror

So far, 2005 is kicking the crap out of 2004 for me (music-wise), hopefully it'll be as good as 2003. :)

I thought you were attacking John Kerry for a second there. ;) :lol

Indie artists = more innovative, but music is music? Nahh. There is a big difference between indie and mainstream, and I'll agree that indie has more talented artists/bands. On the other hand, labeling every non-popular band as "indie" is kind of dumb. You really even can't consider Modest Mouse "indie" anymore. I'm listening to the Doves, do you think they're indie? Not really. They just aren't popular.

As for NMH... I'm just saying that, to me, Neutral Milk Hotel is not one of those gifted indie bands. IMO. My comment was not directed at you and you alone. Sorry if you misunderstood.

Now everyone listen to Snowden by Doves, and chill. Great bloody song.

Diablos, judging by some of your tastes, I think you'd REALLY enjoy some stuff by Owls. Namely songs like "Anyone Can Have A Good Time" and "Holy Fucking Ghost". Or you could just get their entire self-titled album. It's only 8 tracks long.

I'll do that.

Bell Woods - Funny you should mention that, when I was a kid I loved Huey Lewis and the News. In fact, I saw him at a free concert once!

Here are some streaming samples of Tujiko Noriko's stuff (it's written the other way on this site, though...Such is Japanese :p)
http://www.mego.at/noriko.html

If you don't like her after listening to two or three songs, you probably won't like her. She's kinda like a really mellow björk with Books style "melodies". Really relaxing stuff.

Flim is also extremely relaxing. I don't really know what to call it, so here:

How is the new Thievery Corporation? I've heard some of the singles: "Revolution Solution" with Perry Farrell (meh, the unreleased dub remix is better), "Warning Shots" (fucking AWESOME), and the David Byrne collaboration (meh).

hmm, i didn't like "the heart's a lonely hunter" (the david byrne collaboration) at first as well, but it grew on me quickly. it's not a relaxing track obviously but i think it's quirky and fun.
most of the tracks featuring "gunjan" are indo-centric, "satyam shivam sundaram" is pretty good. and as you noted, "warning shots" is very good, with her singing in the background.
"amerimacka" is a very nice track, my favorite so far. i also like the first track, "marching the hate machines into the sun" (flaming lips collaboration), but not very outstanding or anything.
so basically i have been listening to the first 10 tracks mostly, and there are some stand out tracks.

mario, the go find are pretty damn nice! cheers.

Thievery Corporation - Cosmic Game

B0006ZXJ3E.01._SCLZZZZZZZ_.jpg

To weigh in on this Cosmic Game album, I've only given it about two full spins so far, but I'm liking it quite a bit. The collaborations had a lot more vocals to the TC sound and I think it helps broaden their sound a bit; there's still no mistaking the TC trademark sound here but, on the whole, the album feels a bit more lively and is a nice departure, despite being relatively slight, from the usual TC fare. Doors of Perception w/Gunjan is my favorite track so far (all the Gunjan tracks are good IMO), but there are a number of other good ones on here, particularly the last set of tracks. It's a good album, and it's shaping up more and more the more times I listen to it. I think you'd like it jinx, if you liked the rest of their stuff.

And damn me for not getting into Groove Armada sooner. A music binge is forthcoming.
