What are your *Actual* hot takes regarding video games? I mean ACTUAL stuff that would get people riled up?

Outside of link to the past and Ocarina of time, Zelda games are largely shite.

1) Mario needs to die. Nintendo has been milking this fuck for far too long.

Pokemon stadium and the original red/blue/yellow etc are the only pokemon games. Rest is fucking trash.

Rogue lites/likes whatever the stupid fucking name is are pure garbage. MOBAs too.

If your game has crafting, outside of pure survival games, odds are the crafting is utterly pointless and you can beat the game without it.

We need more platformers like pandemonium, crash, spyro, rayman etc and less of everything else.

TLOU2 is a better game than TLOU.

Resident evil is probably the best game franchise to ever exist.

Final fantasy is no longer relevant enough to justify pumping out more mainline games.

2) Hogwarts legacy looked great, but wasn't actually that good. It just got boosted to counter the JK Rowling boycott of the time.
1) lmao xD sounds like its personal
2) Absolutely not. People bought the game because they love Harry Potter. For example: A friend bought and gifted it for our circle as holiday gifts digitally because she knows we really enjoyed the books, we've never brought up 'the controversy' because the whole thing is dumb; its not that deep.
JK Rowling has created a magnificent franchise regardless of how hinged/unhinged she became after the fact.

Bethesda, Rockstar, CD Project, Square Enix are all shitty developers with even shittier games, and JRPGs & turn based games can eat a turd.

A fun topic.
  • RDR2 is Rockstar's worst game because of how disconnected the narrative, mission design and the open-world is. (And how shit it feels to control).
  • Witcher 3 is pretty mid.
  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is the best CoD by far.
  • Splinter Cell 1 + Pandora Tomorrow + Chaos Theory are far better stealth games than Metal Gear Solid 1 + 2 + 3.
  • Baldur's Gate 1 + 2 are overrated, their real-time with pause combat is really dragging them down. The only thing why they are memorable is the writing, which, for their time, was above average for video games. But is nothing special on its own.
  • StarCraft was never a good RTS game and helped to kill the genre in the long run.
  • FF12 (especially the Zodiac Age) is the second-best FF ever and one of the best games Square has ever shat out. (And is one of the very few games where the real-time with pause combat actually is fun)
  • Playstation 5 and Xbox Series X|S are the most disappointing generation of consoles so far. Both MS and Sony first-party stuff is really mid to bad.
  • The Devil May Cry games were never interesting as video games, they got carried hard by their presentation.
  • Sim City 2013 is a better city sim than Cities: Skylines
  • Pokemon stopped being good after Gold/Silver/Crystal.
  • Resident Evil games are shit at being horror games.
  • I find the King's Field games to be far better designed than the Souls games (And that's not nostalgia speaking, since I have played them after Dark Souls 3 came out).
  • Achievements/Trophies were a mistake.
  • All MOBAs are garbage and there is not one single redeeming thing about them.
  • Epic games have only made two good games: Unreal and Unreal Tournament 99.
  • People who say that games "are art" are just trying to justify spending their time on video games by hiding behind statements like this. That goes even moreso for game devs. You are making fucking video games; toys. Be proud of it and embrace that or get the fuck out of the industry.
  • GAF should nuke the off-topic forum; it's just a shit mixture of Twitter and Reddit.
6 replays through FF12 and I hard agree. 5 on Zodiac age, 1 on PS2. God I wish SE would re explore this combat system.

SEGA are historically over-rated as hell. Mario was better than Sonic. Half their library were throwaway arcade shite that's fun for max 30 minutes (see: Crazy Taxi). A lot of their games felt like the off-brand version of better games (Phantasy Star vs Final Fantasy, Sega GT vs Gran Turismo). They delivered flop after flop with the Saturn and Dreamcast. Imagine trying to shadow drop an entire fucking console lmao. Just an awful company who got way better once they went third-party and focused on Yakuza, Total War and Persona. Some of the few good IPs they had, they sat on for years until they recently remembered they existed, much to the joy of irrelevant Gen X'ers.

Sony games haven't had good gameplay since Bloodborne. Most of them have gotten by on good graphics and thats why they keep remastering games because they are out of ideas.

Mario Sunshine is one of the best 3D platformers ever made.

Ff12 was indeed great. I think too many folks who didn't understand final fantasy were just expecting FInal Fantasy X again.

It was highly misunderstood at the time.

My hot takes:

4- The actual best Call of Duty game was Infinite Warfare.

Star Trek Tos GIF

Mario needs to die. Nintendo has been milking this fuck for far too long
I second this. I can't stand this guy and franchise.
Every body is screaming masterpiece each time a new iteration of Mario 64 is coming.

Elden Ring is a big step down from FromSoft previous work. The worst of their recent game in my opinion.

Movement in BotW and TotK is so goddamn sluggish it ruins the games for me.
I get the world, the story, the quests, but fuck me does moving around just feel off.
It's not just speed, jumping, climbing, it's the general feel of moving around.
Same with modern Rockstar games. I don't need to fly across the map on every jump or something but there has to be a middle-ground here.

In fact, it's about the only realistic thing about the two Zelda games, and it's also the exact point at which the entire thing crumbles down.

We should have responded to Mass Effect 2 the way we're responding to modern slop. Could have gotten this phase of the cycle over with way quicker.

5. Rockstar Games is a pos developer for not patching RDR2 to run at 60 fps on current console hardware.

4. "Accessibility" is not the wonderful thing people believe it is. It's just the latest marketing buzzword and current trend and it results in games that are too easy and hand holdy.

3.Cross Play should not just be optional in console multiplayer games but it should NEVER be set as the default! Having CrossPlay as default issues most gamers will play it that way and now multiplayer gaming is no longer a fair experience, since m+k is always superior to controller.

2. Console gamers (of which i am one) have learned to accept being treated worse than PC gamers. When a game has performance issues it's always the "PC version" that gets reported on and thus gets the developers attention first. There are many more examples though where I see console people defending being treated poorly.

1. PS5 Pro is a massive disappointment! It's missing too many games I has hoped to get updates for. The updates it does have are 90% of the time too minor to justify the price and the blame is entirely on Sony, who a)didn't do a good job with PSSR (not saying it won't be good someday...but it's not right now despite hype) and b) Sony is disgracefully not patching ALL of their OWN EXCLUSIVES which is well ...a disgrace ...but back to #4 for a second ...people who bought a PS5 Pro should be outraged by Sony's handling of this console but instead when I complain I am met with nasty insults by Pro owners (watch, you'll see)

Man, FUCK Elden ring...
-Graphics which are 2 gens behind.
-Usual copy-paste and asset reuse up the ass.Sounds,.textures etc are all lifted from previous games.
- in comparison to other FROM games, the art-direction is GOD DAMN AWFUL with monsters and armors which don't make sense and give off this generic high fantasy feel.
- It's basically Dark souls with a dead open world and a horse.

How the FUXK it sold as much as it sold I'll never understand - and this is considered one of the best FROM games ? Fuxking LMAO.

It just goes to show that people just like bullshit min-maxing in their ARPGs and making OP bullshit and broken builds, that, and that they have also being conditioned in thinking that the super lazy and cheap as fuck drip fed "lore" in the usual FROM fashion is to be considered "deep".

Both Sekiro and Bloodborne shit on this game from a height, at least those had some fantastic art-direction and atmosphere.

Fuck this game and fuck the usual snobbish, FROM circle jerk fans.

The large majority of modern JRPGs are garbage. The large majority of open-world games suck ass.
All these games are "work-games" filled with uninteresting content.

anything above 30 fps is a WASTE of resources

Every single game should be 30fps

Fuck all anime inspired action games, they suck (DMC, bayonetta, etc)

All jrpgs suck

All turn based combat games suck. That is not real gameplay

ALL FromSoft games have horrendous combat

Japan fell off a decade ago

"fun" shouldn't be the main focus of a game for the devs. It should be delivering amazing EXPERIENCES

COD has by far the best gunplay in any fps

Holy shit these are some burning hot stinking ass putrid takes.

Exactly what I was looking for! You win the topic!

1) From Software games are complete shit, poor gameplay with slow clunky combat, poor design, poor graphics, poor performance and technical issues galore. The most overrated shit ever.

2) Nintendo consoles after the Gamecube are all garbage, with dumb gimmicks and low quality hardware while being heavily overpriced. They also just release the same 6 or 7 games every time and their fans just gobble it up.

3) Kojima is heavily overrated. Way too much focus on presentation and not enough on gameplay. If you wanna make movies then go make movies, not games.

4) EA's FIFA (now FC) games are absolute garbage and I can't understand why so many people buy them every year. A PES from like 15 years ago has better gameplay than FC25.

5) Final Fantasy XI Online is BY FAR the best FF game ever made and possibly the best game ever made period.

Also, regarding the controversy concerning Assassin's Creed Shadows:

Who the fuck cares. It's a video game. It's fiction. Stop giving a shit.
The Japanese dude complaining about "lack of respect" can suck it, hard.
And yes, it'll be yet another fucking Ubicrud game. But Jesus dude.

Didn't want to crap up the other thread with this take.

30 FPS is fine.

High fidelity graphics are detrimental to art style and overall appeal.

Pokemon games will never live up to their potential.

A new F-Zero game and a lot of old IP that people want a resurgence of would be meh.

Sony games haven't had good gameplay since Bloodborne. Most of them have gotten by on good graphics and thats why they keep remastering games because they are out of ideas.

Mario Sunshine is one of the best 3D platformers ever made.

FLUDD is an amazing mechanic and Isle Delfino was a great setting. The hate it gets is really bizarre to me.

Elaborate? I thought ME2 was phenomenonal.
Greatly reduced scope compared to the promise of Mass Effect. Basically a hallway shooter with a spaceship hub instead of loading screens.
Dialog was on par with a Made for Hulu Sci-Fi series.
Games carry on M rating but are clearly targeting an early high school reading level.

I think gamers thought it had great writing because they hadn't played many dialog heavy games without voice acting (old CRPGs). The only thing I could really say about it is the lore has good bones for a more ambitious writing team to have a crack at. I expected more stuff like the Rhakni queen from ME1 and overall MORE Mass Effect. Yet we got less. Far less. Mordin was the only good new character. What was even the point of Jacob or Zaeed? Anyone who watched a decent amount of TV could have written Jack's entire character arc after seeing her model for 2 minutes.

Basically, the signs were there. You can draw a straight line from ME2 to DAVG

Most games that aren't single player JRPGs aren't worth playing

I'm gonna counter this one and say most JRPG's aren't worth playing because turn based combat is often a snooze fest but whats far worse is those pre-battle and post battle cutscenes and battle score screens and unnecessarily flashy transitions, and everything in between, boring as fuck.

Got a good one that is objectively and verifiably true (I checked with AI).

"The Perfect Dark IP is economically worthless"

Perfect Dark literally existed because they wanted to make more hay off the Goldeneye framework without having to pay licensing. If you're going to make a new SciFi FPS just make a new SciFi FPS. If it's good people will buy it. Chaining this old, poorly thought-out IP to it can only harm it.

All games now adays are factually shittier than back on the 7th and 6th gen consoles because the main goal for success back then was making games that were actually fun. The explosion of multiplayer and internet on the 8th gen was what slowly ruined AAA publishers, led to the creation of GAAS, unfinished releases, crap dlc, crap microtransactions, account creation bs, the list goes on.

Nintendo fucking sucks.

They're lazy, they release subpar hardware and their output is primarily aimed at adult kids but this is by design because they have the monumental fortune that there's an entire generation of adult children walking around who relish in exactly the shit Nintendo pushes out.

I can't take anyone serious who stans for Nintendo.

Most of Sony's first party games (well everything except Gran Turismo) are mediocre as hell and people only glaze them because of console wars.

I once riled some Nier Automata fans up by saying I didn't feel like playing through Part B of the story, because it involved 6 hours of repeating content I'd just played through. Most people took it in stride, but some hardcore fans of the game got upset and called me names - "lazy," unreflective, "entitled," and some others I can't remember. "Entitled" was the funniest.
It wasn't a "hot take," though. I spent time explaining myself, and I wasn't intending to upset anyone - it just turned out that way, lol.

I really do like Nier Automata but I would lie if I said that part B wasn't annoying. I did persevere because I was too fascinated by the story and world and the gameplay of Nier Automata, especially the combat, just flows really well. But man, if Yoko Taro tried to make a point with part B and it being essentially a repeat of part A, then I missed it.

Physically Based Rendering was far more obviously transformative for video game visuals than ray tracing is.
Ray tracing is literally just "Devs don't have to be pro lighting guys anymore" at great expense to the end user. 90% of what we're seeing could be achieved with other techniques. Just takes a craftsman's touch and more time.

I get it. It takes a lot of time to bake lighting and the artists doing it need to have an eye for composition and aesthetics. Now it's just "make it neon, hazy and puddly and the engine will do our jobs for us". Artist's reality looks better than real reality outside a few tight ToD windows. Check how great UE5 games look in broad daylight without a canopy.

We lost an OG hardware player because you all bought a Walkman companies DVD player. Which then attracted a PC software company. This is not the correct timeline.

  1. Sony haven't made a legitimately great game since the PlayStation 3
  2. When I see grown men really into Nintendo, I presume they have a thing for kids
  3. Hideo Kojima can't write for shit, and his entire career has been salvaged by the tech and gameplay innovation of his employees
  4. Gaming was universally better when it was the domain of social outcasts and too-passionate nerds
  5. Pokemon has never actually been a good game
