What are your *Actual* hot takes regarding video games? I mean ACTUAL stuff that would get people riled up?

I guess i can add something but i don't think its a hot take.

Presentation matters more than we give it credit for, the way the game presents itself to the player is highly important and can make or break your experience, the game presents its gameplay mechanics in a nice intuitive way with good enough explaining is important, not too much explaining because that will make it dull and boring to navigate and overwhelm the player, but also not too little and being obscure and confusing which frustrates the player.
The games that do this smartly are not credited by the community but they are by the journalists.
Also presenting a story is more important than the story itself, writing obviously takes the cake, but the core story doesn't matter that much, especially in a game. When i look at some of the games i love for their "story" its not really the story itself, but the way its directed and presented, when i look at some of the characters i like its not that they are oh so deep and complex but more that they are well acted and performed that they are brought to life.
The tone of the story and how it presents its themes either via cinematic cutscenes or any other way such as voice recordings or lore pages or environmental artistic storytelling is all an important part of that.
You can take the most generic fantasy story and it will be great if the presentation is well thought-out, but it doesn't matter to me if your story discusses the deep complexity of the subconscious mind if your presentation is boring and shit.
Also aesthetics matter, not just in art direction but how you present it, games with ugly presentation are often very offputting and make the whole thing harder to digest, it could be ugly environment (unless on purpose) ugly characters, ugly voices, ugly menus..etc
However its important to remember that as good as Presentation can be, it can never make up for a mediocre and shallow game, so while it has importance, its not going to save the game.
Very well said. I'd say a lot of developers fall into the trap of restrictve handholding or they lock off the best gameplay /abilities /gear/levels till waay too late into the game. By that point most players already have made tgeir judgment about your gane and are ready to move on.

And to add: LESS dialogue is always better than CRINGE dialogue! Let silences linger more often!

Black Myth Wukong, while good, is just merely that, "good". It being nominated for GOTY just shows how much gaming as a whole is declining. I'm still persuaded most of the (insane) sales come from the Chinese, who either bought it out of chauvinism, or because they were forced/encouraged to by their government to show the filthy westerners the "Chinese cultural supremacy" (half joking, but I wouldn't put it past the CCP actually).

Even the worst Zelda game (which would be Phantom Hourglass) is better than 90% of what's available on every platform.

Visions of Mana is the most fun I've had in a video game for years.

GTA V and The Witcher 3 has some of the worst gameplay of all time.

Nintendo make really average-poor games, and get a free pass for everything as long as it has their logo or beloved franchises on it.

The big Nintendo games (Pokemon, Zelda, Mario) would struggle to score past 7/10 among PC/PS5/XSX audience.

Xenoblade, AC and Metroid are the only ones that wouldnt get destroyed by user reviews.

Bloodborne is overrated as fuck.
(and so is Elden Ring for that matter)

Dark Souls 2 is underrated.
I agree that DS2 is underrated (because it's the best)

I think Bloodborne is only a bit overrated

I guess is about patriotism? If my country did a great internationally recognized game I would for sure support it and buy it ... not all country's have a big history in AAA mainstream gaming.

1) because of work i associate with A LOT of Chinese people and the CCP did no such thing. But it's true thats millions upon millions of chinese bought it of theown accord because of a mix of hype for a local mythology and national pride.

2) IGN did their best to make people spiteful and poisoned the well long before the game came out by making hit pieces after hit pieces, and their fart sniffing urinalist posse kept circulating these articles.
They literally turned the situation into an Us vs. Them thing for most gamers. I plan to play it myself sometime down the line. There is a chance it would've gone under the radar if not for this shitstorm.

First person shooters peaked in 2002 or so. There hasn't really been a first person shooter experience on console I've enjoyed more than playing the original Ghost Recon with a friend. Everything today sort of sucks, and modern mainstream FPS players are bad at anything that makes them think too hard. There are good games but most are on PC with tiny communities because most people are addicted to hitmarker sound effects and scoreboards, not gameplay. Immersion in general takes a backseat to a laundry list of shallow, forgettable features in most AAA games.

1. Nintendo has been making mediocre games that have the depth of mobile games for more than a decade. Casual games are, unfortunately, the larger market and that explain their success.
2. Blooborne is overrated and the worst Souls game. It has less of everything compared to other Souls games.

Wait does my hot take actually fit the thread topic perfectly.
Hahaha WIN!

Fun thread.

1) the PS2 is Sony's worst console (although the PS5 will probably overtake it) as the worst PS console.

2) Metal Gear Solid 3 is the worst MGS game and the whole retconning of the Patriots to be your Codec contacts is lazy storytelling that ruined the narrative of MGS.

3) the Xbox 360/PS3/Wii era of gaming was the best AAA gaming has ever been and it's not close.

4) Games are not art and anyone who claims they are is a pretentious douche who's never touched a boob.

5) Grand Theft Auto is a bad series that's only had one good game (Vice City). The claims that GTA is some super deep game where you can "do anything" are wrong and stupid.

6) 2D Mario and Zelda are better than 3D Mario and it isn't close. I'll also piggy back on the idea that Mario 64 is kind of bad.

7) Mass Effect 2 is the worst game in the series and that includes Andromeda.

8) We need more console exclusives and Xbox failing will be bad for gamers long term.

There are people that would pull out knives after hearing 1) and 2)

As for 4) Does it count if someone touches their own boob🤔asking for a friend.

Bloodborne is one of the worst video games ever created. Janky movements. horrible frame rate, trash hit detection and non existent story. It's only believed by fromboys.

Yeah i agree this really riles people up, like Nintendo make some very good games, but I feel a lot of critically acclaimed 10/10's rate closer to 8.5 - 8 recently.

Ubisoft of the Wild and Banjo of the Kingdom: Nuts and Bolts are prime examples.

There is for sure a "I'm a nintendo game, score +1" going on with the ratings.

Anyway, here's mine:

  • Tifa >>>> Aerith
  • Star Wars Outlaws >> Jedi Survivor
  • "Souls-likes" are the most tired trend in modern gaming
  • 3DS Is Nintendo's best handheld
  • Discord/private lobby chat was detrimental to online communities. Open mics in Halo/CoD/Gears was peak online multiplayer

Mine are:
We are going to reach a point where every game genre has been invented. Soon it will just be games where the genre is mixed or combined with another one to broaden the games. Everything will just be rehashed
The storyline won't really count for much and the only way to keep interest is via gameplay.

Not everything needs to be Metroidvania or Rogue(like/lite) but they are fun games

A lot of big studios treat gaming incorrectly as some kind of cash cow and not the entertainment medium it is. That's why gaming is going tits up at the moment

Politics etc should be kept out of gaming as it's a form of entertainment and escapism

Games should encourage enjoyment not punish you for not knowing everything about the gameplay. Souls like for example.

Sometimes like in life a fun 6 or 7 out of ten is better than a boring 10/10

I agree with every single point. But I would add that both Star Wars Outlaws and the Jedi games by Respawns are fucking trash compared to the Jedi Knight games.

Outlaws has the best atmosphere of any SW game, bar none. Including JK and KOTOR. Say what you will about the story or gameplay but it has the best crafted world(s) of the IP.

Rare was always a massively overrated developer who made good, but not great games, but they were loved because they were the only ones attempting to consistently put out decent games on a console that was critically lacking in quality games outside of Nintendo 1st party. There's a reason Nintendo let Microsoft have them.

N64 in general was imo, a shit console.

EA while obviously not a great company, is massively overhated online. The likes of take-two/Activision are far more deserving of the sheer vitriol that EA normally gets.

PSP was a shit handheld.

1) The Xbox tax is 100% real. People who deny this shit are as dumb as flat Earthers. You could take ANY first party Sony hit, MIB mind wipe the population and then make it an Xbox exclusive, and it would score 5 points lower at a minimum.
2) Nintendo doesn't get taxed, they get score bumps. Literally critics, and gamers, put Nintendo in their own category so they don't have to dock their games due to shit hardware making games run and look worse and less enjoyable to play. If BotW came out looking and running like it did on a PS5, it would score a 6/10. Terrible PC ports that, deservingly get roasted, are better running than a flagship Switch game.

Nintendo definitely gets held to a lower standard.

I remember when ME: Andromeda came out, the internet was bashing the hell out of it for every little graphical glitch and awkward facial animation. Meanwhile BotW launched around the same time and critics + gamers fawned over it.

Yet if ME: Andromeda had the same graphical fidelity as BotW, it would've been bashed 100x worse than it already was.

From the top of my head:

-Sucker Punch is a mid developer that has never put out a truly great game. Since the Ps3 era they insist on making open world games even though they suck at designing open worlds.

-Insomniac is in a similar camp, while I do like their games, I think they are always in the "good but not great" category.

-Rockstar games have amazing production values and attention to detail, but the actual gameplay and mission design in their games is never good.

- Lots of Nintendo games are over priced and overrated. A lot of their stuff is the equivalent of $30-40 indie games that get massive praise and sell millions of units at full price just because they are attached to Nintendo

- Monster Hunter would be way better if they cut all the farming and crafting that isn't strictly related to killing monsters to make better armors/weapons. Having to do stuff like complete quests to expand my garden so I can "plant" more honey and bugs that I can then use to craft better potions and consumable items is boring and a massive waste of time. Just sell me the fucking potions and consumables in the store (or let you stock up for free).

- Black Ops 3 has the best COD campaign. The story was stupid as fuck but it was a ton of fun to play in Co-op.

- Most of the minigames in the Yakuza games suck.

Advanced graphical fidelity isn't just overrated, but often detrimental to the quality of a game. Not just because of decreased performance, but also because it harms visual clarity <- an element that gets neglected far too much for the sake of having pretty scenes, and the reason many ugly UI elements got introduced.

My hot takes:

1- Every console manufacturer should take extreme measures in gate-keeping games on their consoles, and should openly sign exclusive content rights with 3rd party publishers, and porting to PC or competition shouldn't even be on the table (i.e. M$: fumbled the bag big time, Sony: In the process of fumbling the bag, Nintendo: Rather good regarding this till now).

2- SOMA is a mediocre game at best. Its only "Horror" or "Deep" or "Philosophical" because it reflects the player's own insecurity regarding his/her place in the universe, and what comes after. It's made from the ground up as misery porn for nihilist-esque mindsets.

3- Red dead games are slow as molasses bore-fests. They don't deserve the hype besides the horse testicles in RDR2.

4- The actual best Call of Duty game was Infinite Warfare.
These are *hot* takes? You need to step your game up. Here, let me show you an example of real hot takes: (Note: these aren't my actual opinions but I'm trying to come up with scenarios that fit your topic)

1) Souls games should have a 2 modes. One for the fans, with the traditional souls difficult and the other for casual players or on option to play it like any other WRPG where stats make a big difference than learning attack patterns.

2). All controllers should emulate the Joy-con design. Period. 2 separate controllers that can work independently on some games or 2 player modes.

3) console manufacturers should have upgradable hardware like a PC. Just design a simple plug and play device for continuous upgrades for CPU/GPU/RAM/SSD. I don't mind if it's console exclusive hardware but let's be done with "generations" all together

4) Fuck cross-gen games. Once a new hardware comes. ALL new titles released there should utilize the machine's capabilities from the start an no compromises to fit into the design of the previous hardware.

1- Metroid is incredibly overrated. Yes, all of them.
Out of all the "Metroid-vania" games I've played in my life, the ones that I least enjoyed are the actual Metroid games (2d and 3d).

2- TES III: Morrowind is a bad videogame, TES IV: Oblivion is actually better.
Super slow, boring missions, dead world design (I know it's on purpose but it gets old really quickly), frustrating combat, really easy to break...

This isn't a hot take at all

...well maybe in a degenerate place like this it is ha

Sony games aren't even truw videogames, there should be a law that bans videogames without a certain percentage of playable time, Sony games should be categorized as "playable movies"

I absolutely agree regarding Sucker Punch, specifically. I don't get how Ghost of Tsushima (despite looking very pretty) gets all the free passes in the world while the Assassin's Creed games are somehow terrible despite being mechanically similar (in fact, I'd argue that the inclusion of ship battles, multiple primary weapons, etc. makes AC more mechanically rich). And don't get me started on the blandness that is the Infamous series.

Insomniac I enjoy more, however.

Ultima (due to IV, Underworld, and Online at minimum) deserves vastly more credit as a landmark franchise for gaming innovation than it gets. It should always be in the conversation alongside Mario, Half-life, Final Fantasy, etc.

I played Ghost of Tsushima recently on PC, and I have no loyalty to Sony or Sucker Punch, but GoT was one of the most fun open world games I played in a long time.
Yes, it can become tedious rather quickly like an Ubisoft game if you try to go for the collectibles/side content, but man that swordfighting was smooth and lethal, and the voice acting was absolutely top notch.
It also gave me the sense that the devs really really loved Seven Samurai and classic Japanese movie culture, and the passion really showed

These hot takes are good and all but they are not really feasible. Besides maybe 1) the market has already decided that they are fine with not having 2) 3) and 4) for the past 30+ years. I have both consoles and PCs, and these are not and never will be interchangeable.

It is since most people prefer the PS2/XBOX/Gamecube era by far followed by the PS1/N64 era as second.

Doesn't preferring Aerith over Tifa put you on the interpol hit list? No?

WELL IT SHOULD >:O

The rest is actually hot takes
I do think more people prefer Tifa over Aerith but I also don't think liking either more is a hot take. Adult Rydia and Hera from FFIV are better than Tifa and Aerith, now that would be a hot take and one I agree with.

Not necessarily video games but...

GAF is becoming almost as radical as the purple place.
Yours is definitely a hot take but in truth Gamefaqs is the one that's almost like the purple place. Besides Steam and Reddit, the three biggest and most active gaming forums are Gamefaqs, ResetEra, and Neogaf. Been on gamefaqs for years with this same user name and it's definitely more extreme and crazy than Neogaf but not quite to purple level yet.

Yup.
I mean I like the combat in Tsushima better than any AC (though it still lacks more enemy variety) and I thought the visuals and art direction were nice.
But other than that it's a pretty bland game. The world is boring to explore and filled with repetitive and formulaic content. They've been making open world games for like 15 years and still haven't moved past that 2009 Ubisoft template (which even Ubisoft has improved upon).

Infamous is even worse.
In Second Son you play as a character with multiple super powers in an open city sandbox and the best they could come up with for you to do in it is stuff like "shoot down a drone", "find a security camera", "find the person in this picture among this crowd" and other equally bland and uninspired stuff.

I always gave them the benefit of the doubt with Second Son because it was a launch window game, so maybe they were rushed or something. But then they come out with Tsushima after 6 years and the world design is still nearly as bland.

Tlou2 beats the first one in anything but story and even that is debatable.

Ghost of Tsushima is good but it never would have gotten the praise it did if Tlou2 never came out. It was used more as a weapon in the culture war rather than judged on its merits.

Rockstar games play just fine. There are plenty of arcade type of games and people need to stop wanting them to be something they are not. I will be disappointed if GTA VI caters to these complaints.

Woke and anti woke are two sides to the same coin and at their core they want games and other things to cater specifically to them and their delicate sensibilities. They can't accept there are plenty of options and different types of gamers out there and if they don't like something they can move on.

People who consider themselves true gamers are as annoying as music hipsters who hate anything mainstream. Casuals at least seem to actually like games instead of complaining incessantly.

I had an account on GFaqs since 2007 that i just deleted.
omeone was complaining on the concord board that anyone who boycotts it is a bigot and hates women. I said sure call me a bigot but you'l never make me or any of the overwhelming majority buy the game because it objectively stinks.

Got hit with a 60 days ban

Fuck Gamefaqs. It sucks that its probably still the best place for guide for pre 2013 games but oh well.

Visual transitions in menus should never be longer than your reaction time to react to new information after you trigger the transition. For me, it's about a tenth of a second. This goes for websites too!

Good to see another former gamefaqs member here and yeah the mods there have been way crazier and insane over the past few years, basically almost as retarded as resetera now.

Agreed that Gamefaqs used to be super amazing, met a bunch of interesting folks there over the years. Site used to not be so thin skinned and was actually fun. Even a lot of the trolls were fun and lighten the place up like Lightning, Michael Does Life, edward17, Slum King, Firemage,ManuMias, Tekkam etc you'll know them if you were on the Zelda, Final Fantasy VII, and Resident Evil board. Shame it's all gone to shit. Glad I made the jump to Neogaf, this is by far the best and most fair gaming forum, reminds me of the old school gamefaqs days.
