I'll stick to ten choices, but as with anything pertaining to lists, the number of (insert entity here) one wants to rank should be up to the one making their own personal list, IMO.

Having said that, I'll go with:

10. Sega Saturn
9. Playstation Vita
8. NES
7. Super Nintendo
6. Game Boy Advance
5. Playstation Portable
4. Sega Dreamcast
3. Playstation 2

Those are my top 4. I can't put them into an order though since they all fulfil very different gaming needs and it's impossible for me to say which one is better than the other(s).

I believe those are even my most played systems, I own the most games on those systems, and had the most fun.
 
Pretty easy to name 10 favorite consoles. At a certain point you run out of time to play all the excellent games.

In no order:

PS2, Genesis, SNES, NES, Wii, Saturn, PS4, PS3, Switch, 360.

Depends on the focus of the list.
I can't create a general toplist, because ever console has its unique features, which makes it stand out. Also I see many retro consoles through rose-colored glasses.

No specific order.


But I love my NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Ps2, PSP, PSVITA, Dreamcast, Gameboy, Advance SP, DSi, DsLite, Dreamcast nevertheless.

To me it's like choosing your favorite son.

Genesis, Saturn, Dreamcast, SNES, NES, PS1, PS2, PS4 in no particular order.

Portable is easy though:

DS hands down... GBA a close second.

I barely cared about consoles this generation. The most exciting console experiences for me this gen were Halo 5 and Death Stranding. It was an underwhelming generation for me first party wise.

Destiny 1 was great as well but having Halo Bungie expectations going into it definitely hurt.

Xbox 360 is magical to me. It was such a huge jump! And it had so many good, single player games
 
I dont really have a good memory to compare, so I will just say: Xbox One X. In two years I have spent more time playing it than all other consoles combined (And I had them since early 90's)
 
Consoles are all about exclusives and N64 has so many to experience (Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time etc.) Nintendo's commitment that generation was great.

I've been there in the 90's and I find it astounding that someone mentions the n64.
For nostalgia sake sure, but its nowhere near as good as the snes.
It's really hard for me to even make a top 10 n64 games.

I've played many consoles over the years, but my favourites are

Switch

Latest offering from Nintendo, and a great home console hybrid with some absolutely superb titles to offer

Nintendo 3DS

Didn't get into the DS as i'd have liked, but the 3DS was different. Loved the Streetpass feature and the games that co-incided with it.

Mega Drive

First proper console i owned, and it was the one that solidified gaming as a passion of mine.

PS4

First PlayStation console i've owned, and it's just brilliant. Great exclusives.

I have to agree, I think it's the weakest Nintendo console outside the Virtual Boy. Even the much-maligned Wii-U has a far stronger library than the N64 if you ask me (not to mention a much better controller).

There were barely 300 games released for the N64 in all regions over the course of its lifespan. To put that into perspective, the Saturn's library was about 4x bigger and the PS1's probably about 8-9x bigger (struggling to find data for total number of PS1 games released in all regions but I'm guessing it must be 2,500+). N64 fans will say "quality over quantity". I would say it's a console with a handful of obvious classics- although even some of those have aged horribly (Goldeneye)- but very little depth to its library outside of that. There's huge gaps in the N64s library that competing systems don't suffer with: it has very little by way of fighting games, shmups, RPGS or anything 2D. The latter in particular is quite a big problem when many of its 3D games run at framerates that would be considered unplayable today.

I was a Sega kid back in the 90s but switched sides to the N64 initially once the Saturn died rather than getting a Dreamcast at launch. It was my first Nintendo console and I do still have a certain amount of fondness for it. Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Mario 64, Paper Mario and Starfox 64 are all great games. However, I think if I was a Nintendo fan back then I would have been very disappointing with the N64. I can only imagine seeing it as a massive let down following the Snes. It simply doesn't have the depth of quality in its library I'd expect from a Nintendo system.

The Nintendo Entertainment System was like discovering a new continent for me. It was the crossover between arcade games and brought some semblance of coin ops home and a monumental leap between generations. The Sega Genesis is next on my list. Playstation follows that and was another generational milestone. Everything that came after is just better graphics and sound to me.

They're fundamentally the best consoles ever made because they're home to eternally entertaining 2D video games. The Mega Drive edges over the SNES because these days i prefer 2D action games that are easy to pick up and play, and this machine is chock full of them.

3. Sega Saturn
4. Playstation 2

3rd spot is easy, it's a machine that houses a plethora of excellent 2D action video games and many unique 3D video games that are only marred by technical aspects which i can be lenient towards if there are elements that i can enjoy - such as in, for example, the Panzer Dragoon series; despite its early 3D graphics, they're just incredibly atmospheric and enjoyable to play because of polished controls that are designed with arcade sensibilities.

Playstation 2 is the Playstation 2. Basically has a bunch of everything on it.
