I am not sure who did the most work so far, the most gruelling crunch…I dont think OP is crazy in thinking that 5 years to do a sequel game that looks basically exactly like the first game appears too mutch... it has basically the same graphics assets with a new story and some gameplay enhancements.
After seeing the trailer I thought exactly the same...
And If this sequel had come out 3 years after GOT.. NOONE would look at it and be surprised.

- They are a small team of under 200 people
- They maintain their own engine
- Game development is incredibly resource intensive. Even teams substantially bigger on third party middleware take 5-6 years to turn out an open world game these days
- Making a wholly non linear game with two completely independent renderings in the past and present is insanely complicated because of the number of out of sequence variables that can break thing, and I would not be surprised if that took a lot of time
- They put out Iki Island in 2021, and continued to support Legends through to 2022
- There was a fucking pandemic in there for a good two years

This kind of DLC argument only applies to a few games this generation. GOW Ragnorak, FF7 Rebirth, TLOU Remake Part 1, and now Ghosts 2. Spiderman 2 and DS2 can also be considered a bit DLC like but at least they put in some effort making new textures and improving their cutscene character models. These lazy bums didnt even do that.

People in this thread, a lot, are bending over backwards to justify tons of years between BotW and TotK, large price increases despite obvious cheapening out on some components, and then magically they take a hyper critical simplicity of approach at this game. Sure DS2 and GoY are barely (not even in the case of the latter) minor texture reskin of their predecessors.

Lets break it down.
Game engine and graphics? No, same engine, graphics barely evolved
AI / Physics / Fire/ Fluids simulation - No
Art style - no, this was done.
Music/OST - this can't take so many years.
Story writing - its no Godfather right? Classic revenge story.
World/missions design - done in the 1st game. This barely adds anything truly meaningful. Repetitive open world grinding.
Does motion capture, voice acting take years upon years? What seriously happened?
