What do you expect from the Next Generation of standard controllers?

I thought back paddles would have been on the standard controllers this generation but after seeing how well the $200 Edge is selling I know that dream is dead & gone.

What do you hope or believe will be a new feature on the standard controllers of Next-Gen Consoles?
I see a lot of people crying for Hall Effect lately so hopefully it will be a standard next generation.

Personally, I like regular controllers. I got a PS5 on launch day and immediately turned off the haptics, speaker, etc.
I have never turned any of it back on. That stuff isn’t for me. Same thing with motion controls.

I don’t mind the Touch Pad when it’s used.
 
I really hope that Hall sensors or similar tech become standard.
I hope so. Especially for switch lites where it isn't easy to change stick drift joycons.

Also maybe some new type of feel technology where you can feel stuff in your games. I wasn't that impressed with dual sense.

Oh and long battery life.

I think the DualSense can be really neat when it's implemented well. For example, it's really cool in Astro Bot when you're walking on a metal surface and you feel each step clinking.

It just feels like most devs (even 1st party) see as somewhat of an afterthought.

And yes, it's 2024, almost 2025. Give us better battery life. The Switch Pro controller has an insane amount of battery, so figure out what Nintendo did to achieve that.

Probably depends on if they are going to offer a handheld again. That could potentially be compatible as a PS6 controller.

I have an 8bitdo ultimate controller for switch / pc and i haven't had to charge it yet. Thing lasts awhile. It has hall effect too.

I read an article that describes a new technology that is better than hall effect. It uses way less energy than hall effect sticks. So longer battery life. It still is drift proof as well.

I wish i could remember the name of the new controller stick technology.

I totally forgot that Sony had to omit dual shock in the originally DS3 controllers. That was weird!

I have a feeling you'll really dig Astro Bot. It's as close to a 3D Mario game as we'll ever get on a PS console, I would imagine.

That controller tech you described sounds awesome! I hope it becomes implemented on a widespread basis!

Another thing that I would love is to be able to have console controllers similar to the PSVR2 Sense controllers. It would be awesome to play a regular game on my TV with my hands not together in my lap.

I want the Series X controller with Gyro, haptics, paddles and a rechargeable battery.

I can’t stand Sony’s approach, anything after the DS2 is complete shit in quality, battery life and ergonomics, the Dual Sense is a step in the right direction but the drift, horrendous battery life and increased priced without fixing anything about make it shit tier still.

Touch capacitive keyboard where the back paddles are on controllers now. The #1 frustration I have with controllers is how slow it is to type on them.

Paddles or back buttons. They really should be standard by now. So much more ergonomic for mapping buttons like sprint and dodge/dive. In that you don't have to move your thumbs to reach the face buttons unless for a specific action. They could add additional paddles (2>4) from regular to Pro and still include more premium and interchangeble parts in the premium model. That and hall-effect thumbsticks. No reason to not include those as they cost pennies and would fix stick drift.

Maybe hall effect main buttons. That would add a lot added extra functions with adjustable actuations; with different actions for a light to a harder press and bottoming out. Much like the DualShock 2/3 of old. Pretty much like analogue buttons.

I'd expect just the standard iterative upgrade though.

If they don't come standard with Hall Effect sticks, mine is going straight to Ebay and I'll buy 3rd party.

I'd love that, but then how would they make you buy more controllers during the life of the console? They make a lot of money on controllers. I don't think it's happening unfortunately.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo should have more than a standard and pro version of their controllers. They should have a fleet of 4 - 6 like car companies.

A ton of lawsuits over joycon drift. I reckon they would save money by using hall effect. It cannot be cheap to deal with lawsuits or mail in joycon repair.

Got to pay all those people that repair joycons a salary.

A great rumble, long battery life and 2 back paddles is what I want. Both the PlayStation and Xbox already have 2/3 of those.

I hope Microsoft and Sony both stop right where they are and just keep the same controllers. I think both are perfect ergonomically, and I don't want any additional gimmicks added to them. I think the Dual Sense went too far with the force feedback in the triggers. It's neat that they came up with the technology, but I wind up turning it off in every game that uses it.

I'd rather the focus on improving the reliability and lowering the cost than furthering designs and adding more gimmicks.

I used to want a controller with a trackball but now that I have a mouse with a trackball I don't really use it because I'm used to the touch controls on my Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse now I'm hoping for touch on the thumb sticks

I bought a $200 third party controller for ps4 once. Think it was Scuff brand. That shit had drift and the thumb stick rubber disengrated after only 2 months. No warranty either.

Never again will i buy an $200 controller.

I had drift happen to a 360 controller and joycons.

I see people online mentioning their dualsense drift a few times.

I sold a dualsense to a guy before cause his controller was drifting.

Give me an Xbox elite for the PS6 and I'll be happy. I love the Dualsense Edge but love the Elite 2 more. I never had stick drift on my launch elite 1 or launch elite 2 but if they can do hall effect or other tech in the next one, it will be the perfect controller.

Sony better stop using whatever manufacturer/materials for their thumbstick sensors. I'm 4 Dualsenses in already and all 4 got stick drift. I found a way to take them apart and clean the sensors when it happens, but it's time consuming and not a permanent fix. Seems to just be shitty quality sensors.

I think you can play switch on your tv like that. Holding each joycon in each hand as far away from each other as you want.

I am buying a psvr 2 soon and will look forward to those sense controllers.

Yeah, you can do that with the Switch Joy Cons, but they're so small and feel so goofy in my hands! The VR Sense Controllers have a proper weight and size to them which makes them feel so much better in your hands.

If you haven't tried PSVR2, you'll probably dig it- it's a huge step up from PSVR1, plus the fact that it connects to PS5 with one single cable is way better.

Thanks for the link! I read through the article and TMR sounds like it could very well be the future. No stick drift, lower power usage than Hall sensors while simultaneously being more accurate, and a low price are all working in its favor.

Astro's Playroom uses the Dualsense way better than Astro Bot.
so that's still the best demo for the controller.

Returnal and Ratchet & Clank both use the triggers in interesting ways. by having a secondary fire if you push through the initial trigger stop.

but that's about it for games that really showcase the controller

Wheel doesn’t need to be reinvented. Just sturdy quality materials so the controller can last 2-3 years of heavy use or 4-5 years of casual use. Good battery life would be nice too.

Back paddles should have been standard. Thanks to MS, we didn't even get gyros standard. I think that will change next gen. I also think they'll join the linear actuator party like the Jocon/Pro controller and Dualsense have.

I doubt the mechanical haptic triggers of the dualsense will become standard, though some level of trigger haptics like the XB1 had could (I'd like to be wrong though). Back paddles and hall effect sensors are two more things I'd like to see but we probably won't get.

PSVR2 is awesome but keep in mind that the sense controllers can't be used as a split regular controller. It doesn't have a d-pad or touchpad. Some VR games it might work in the regular non-VR mode but most games won't recognise it as a standard controller especially if it requires a d-pad or touchpad input.
