What do you think is the hardest game ever made?

Old games needed to be hard because they are very short. Besides, their mechanics were mostly rough so their difficulty was artificially elevated.

Then, you have games like the first Metroid or Castlevania II, which were pioneers of a new genre with rules that players didn't know and couldn't figure out by intuition. In the pre-internet era there was no easy way to solve hard puzzles. Those games weren't just difficult, they introduced a new logic in game design so their difficulty was on a whole different level.

Of all the games I've played it's probably The Adventures of Bayou Billy. Granted I was a small kid when I played it but I don't think I'd fare any better today.
Oh gosh - I was wondering if someone would mention that. Bayou Billy I remember giving up on almost immediately after borrowing it off a friend. Granted I was tiny & the memories are hazy. But back then I'd smashed through mega-man, all the Mario games, kid Icarus, Zelda, double dragon, chip n dale rescue rangers, castlevania. Then along came bayou billy & I just threw the towel in.

- amount of health
- amount of posture
- attack animations
- your inventory
- the amount of items you can carry
- the location you meet the standard bosses and minibosses
- entirely new quests and sidequests
This is far from most aspects of the game.

Bayou Billy
Hell yeah

I recently tried the infamous Chakan for the Genesis and... wut?
Nothing in this game works as it should. The controls are terrible. The collisions are even worse. I played for almost an hour and I couldn't even last two minutes in a single stage.
Too bad, 'cuz the game has one of the most badass intros of any game from that era that I've played.
