What do you call getting bumped back to the start and losing the stuff you collected and then having to re-traverse the same area in it’s entirety and to have to find and battle your previous body in order to get back said collectables?

By this definition, the Souls games would have rogue elements, which, you know... they're not quite in that genre.

Hollow Knight would be more like a metroidvania with punishable elements.

I think my mind was thinking “Souls-like” and my fingers were typing “rogue-like”. Too many bloody genres!

I guess I don’t like Souls-like games and rogue-likes haha.

Borderlands 2 (which I picked up with the Handsome Collection for 9.99 euros). It's awesome, actually, i.e. after quitting Mafia 3 (with its insultingly repetitive mission structure & dubious anti-American message) this is really, really good.

The gunplay is good, the loot system works (once investing in a larger backpack) & the overall tone is funny as hell (even blowing thousands of dollars via tipping Moxxi is 'fun'). I'm at level 12 so far & I'd recommend this to anyone who enjoyed Destiny's shootbang… yet was disappointed with the single player & story. Borderlands 2 scratches that particular itch.

I'm starting The Witcher 3 today, first time stepping in to series hope i'm not missing much from 1-2.

On console, further into the game you'll be asked some questions & Geralt's answers (your answers) will shape a large part of the geopolitical landscape. So I'd personally suggest at least playing Witcher 2 (either on PC or backwards compatible on Xbox One), but if that's not possible look online & see all the choices in Witcher 2 (without spoiling Witcher 3 of course).

I love Witcher 3, but a certain amount of knowledge about the characters & events (including the obvious Wild Hunt) is required before playing, i.e. knowledge the game doesn't explain properly to newcomers. I started Witcher 3 myself without having played the first 2 & quickly realized I didn't have a clue about the factions or people involved (& at war against each other). So I went back & played Witcher 2 on Xbox One first.

Ah thanks for the heads up, so i'll try to find a nice deal on The Witcher 2, don't wanna spoil the experience of 3. Cheers.

I just picked up SOMA on the PS sale on friday. Thought it would be a nice weekend filler and guess what? I was right. I just finished it and what can I say, I liked it.

The story was interesting and it even was a bit creepy with that thing chasing you the whole game. I you want a decent survival horror game with a good story, you can't go wrong with SOMA. Especially at this pricepoint (< 10 bucks).

But now that I bought it, it'll probably be on PS+ next month anyway.

Burned through Mass Effect 1&2 and got a little sick of TPS/RPGs. Been playing Empires: Dawn of the Modern World from GoG. Great game in the vein of AoE. I enjoy skirmishing the computer in multiplayer mode. Tons of options like different ages(Medieval, WWII, etc), action mode variants, difficulty sliders, full resource deathmatch from the start, around a dozen map types, 1-7 opponents. Shit gets crazy real fast, easy to lose 3-4hrs without noticing.

Playing Xenoblade X again. I bought one of the DLC characters so I started messing around with it again. I finally grabbed the last piece of armor for my avatar too. I also learned that I didnt screw myself out of a complete Enemy List so I'm going to get work on that.

Playing Hollow Knight for the moment. This whole "get back to the spot where you died to reclaim your lost souls/money/ or whatever the hell kinda currency the game uses" needs to die. Come up with something new for fucks sake instead of stealing mechanics right off the bat, like every other imitator before you have done. Other than that it´s pretty good, with the audiovisuals being the main draw, since the game seems to have zero new ideas on how to approach this particular sub-genre.

I pretty much agree as I stated on the last page, but I’ll give it more time.

Reached Queens Station now in Hollow Knight. As far as Metroidvanias goes this one is pretty good, with the bosses being a real highlight so far. They have been really fun to battle, although they have been quite easy. The whole game has been really easy so far, but it´s not taking anything away from the overall experience. I don´t mind it being easy, since I´m all about exploring anyway. But so far I prefer Axiom Verge when it comes to Metroidvanias this generation. And no one has conquered the king yet, Symphony of the Night is still at large after all these years.

finished up a good month of No Man's Sky and back to GTA Online to check out the new nightclub update. was a bit underwhelming at first but starting to appreciate the simplicity of its delivery missions now (they scale in a way that make them very convenient for solo grinders), and the new 'mobile mission center' (Terrorbyte truck) is a pretty big game changer whether I'm doing special cargo and import/export (park it right outside by vehicle warehouse) or I just want to do a solo session and use it do do the new terrorbyte missions and VIP work.

update was a bit underwhelming at first, how simple all the new content is or how underwhelming 'business consolidation' was (would have thought they'd sell us big new mansions to finally get a single 'source all' hub... not the back of some truck), but the more I play it, the more I appreciate the small solo grinder QOL improves the new content provides.

Playing Hollow Knight.
I'm absolutely loving this game and at least to me it's easily the best metroidvania since Symphony of the night.

The gameplay is great although not particularly innovative, but it's the amazing world which really makes this stand out. Great location variety with awesome level design. Exploring is a joy in this and most of the things you find feel rewarding and meaningful. The art direction and overall look is fantastic and I'm loving the mysterious story and lore.
Also, this is turning out to be more than twice as big as I ever expected, I'm constantly being surprised by new areas, new NPC's, new bosses, etc .... I understand why they are charging $15 for it and not more... But this is easily the most I've gotten out of a game in this price range (in terms of quality content)

Started Mario+Rabbids on Switch.
Just played about an hour, as a big Xcom fan, good impressions up to this point.
Hopefully the game keeps growing in complexity and challenge.

I think I’m going to become addicted to Ghost Recon Wildlands (PS4).
After the first two hours I wasn’t too sure as I found it overwhelming and the camera made me feel a bit pukey, but I sank a few hours into it yesterday and now I’m hooked.

The open world reminds me a bit of Just Cause.

Also getting around to playing through the Force Unleashed. Seems pretty cool so far.

Booted up a new character in Bloodborne. Skill - Bloodtinge which has become the only build that I like in this game. Simon´s Bowblade is just so fucking good, and together with the Rakuyo it just demolishes everything in its path. I´m gonna combine those with the Chikage and Church Pick and then wreck havoc in the dungeons. Rakuyo is the best weapon in the game, the DPS output on this thing is crazy and bosses gets destroyed in an instant when fully gemmed and upgraded. I just landed in Nightmare Frontier because I need to pick up Lorans Chalice. Amygdala is a joke with the Bowblade. Seriously, I can´t get enough of this game, I just can´t stop playing it. It has held me hostage now for three years and it still keeps going.

It really is a masterpiece, I just played it this summer for the first time. I got all the way the last fight, died once, and never went back to it after getting back into Street Fighter 5 hard. I want to go back sometime and finish the DLC.

You should definitely go back. The Old Hunters is the best expansion ever made, with the best bosses and weapons that Soulsborne has to offer.

I don't really enjoy experimenting with weapons :D I was pretty much pistol/sawblade the whole game. Any time I tried new weapons it just didn't feel right. But I love the imagination that went into all of them.

I want to go back, but I think I was on the ludwig fight and I was just getting tired of fighting the bosses. I'm not that great at the game, so each boss is just an incredibly frustrating barrier that sometimes takes me days to get past.

So I finished Shenmue I from the Shenmue I & II collection for PS4.

Not really much to add here. I had already played through the Dreamcast version a grand total of 7 times. This playthrough offered very little surprises. It's a good 3D aventure game but as time went on, it's major shortcomings only got more visible. No point in critizing graphics, voice and sound, cause in early 1999, it was rare to have this much prodution in AAA games. It was a product of it's time. However, some of the design issues that the original Shenmue had only got much worse as times went along. And time is clearly an issue, waiting around for a certain store to open or be in a certain place to trigger an event can be annoying. And there's not really much to do to pass the time, you can only play the same games at the arcade and chug so many soda cans till your mind starts to tune out. Almost a decade later, it's even worse, because there's a sense of randomness in how many events in Shenmue play out. That randomness is a double-edged sword, methinks. It can make the playthroughs feel different. But a lot of times, it feels like you have to roam around waiting for things to happen. It's not that Shenmue I is a bad game, far from it, it's just that in 2018, some of it's design flaws are just that more noticable.

I found Mafia II for PS3 from garbage bin during weekend. Played 4-5 hours non-stop, story seems good and it somehow feels like predecessor to GTA5.

WARFIELD, a new FPS that has it's own in-game currency. They're making this GOLDER platform which by playing the game you will be able to acquire these tokens and eventually cash them into crypto. Game is in Alpha I suggest you google it!

P.S. I also started playing for Honor since it became free to keep on steam :D

I play CS:GO and I am a huge fan of this game. Love playing it with my mates. I found eSport platform where I can constantly play with new players and improve my skills. I want to become a Pro and hopw my dream will come true soon.

Completed Ni No Kuni II, now doing some post game stuff. Lovin this game, I put about 100 hours and I need to complete 10 maze level and some new dlc stuff. And played Bomberman on Saturn, wow what a game! 2D graphics is amazing and that soundtrack, level design is really briliant. My next two games will be PES2019 and Dragon Quest XI

Lol, tried warfield yesterday! Liked the idea as well, mainly about cashing out for playing. Now I'm about to finish Witcher, so maybe after I'm done with it I'll focus more on money making just to see if it works haha

This is the third comment I read with the same message. I was so up for hallow knight, because of the way it's displayed. But more I read about it, more it stops me :( If you would have to say YES or NO for this game, what would you?

jshackles

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
After I finished with Octopath and came up a few weeks short of Dragon Quest XI, I started playing Ys VIII.

Game is pretty awesome so far but definitely doesn't feel like "next-gen Ys", probably because it started off as a Vita game in Japan.

HowLongToBeat says 37 hours but I don't know if it'll take me that long or if there's just a lot of filler in the end-game. I'm 6 hours in and already level 28 and fairly far up the equipment upgrade path, so we'll see. Either way, I'm loving the story and the action is great as per usual with the series.

If you like Metroidvanias then it´s a big YES. The game is well made, at least as far as I´ve gotten (about 7 hours of playtime). And the dying-part is not a big issue, you don´t have to walk far to retrieve your loot and the game is quite easy and forgiving with checkpoints. It´s just that this particular mechanic has been copied in so many games now that it feels tacked on and uninspiring.

Glad to hear your feedback on Flinthook, I liked what I (briefly) saw and look forward to it even more!

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Breath of Fire IV (PSVita) and Shenmue II (PS4)

Coming from BoFIII, Breath of Fire IV is a much more polished version of III and is definitely more... Inhuman if that's the right term.

Shenmue II is sooo buggy compared to Shenmue I. For some reason I like the charm of the first game more than the second.

Mad Max - PS4 - I gotta say, I'm constantly having to "think" about the controls with this one. They just seem so non-standard for this type of game. Usually I can manage a fair number of games in my rotation, but each time I go back to Mad Max I gotta keep checking the controller config.

DOOM 2016 - XBOX One - Already beat on PC

Tomb Raider Legend - XBOX One - 2nd replay

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided - PC - I desperately need to upgrade my GPU. May end up shelving this until then.

MCC Halo 1 - XBOX One - Already played numerous times, and getting back into it was like gently easing into a nice warm bath. So good.

I've finished a ton of games so far this year as well.
No one can say this isn't the best time ever to be a game player. I've got 30+ years worth of games to play through, many of them for the first time. I need not buy another game again ever, but I still will.
